The little boy next door, who likes to help me in the garden, gifted me a couple of bags of ranunculus corms a few weeks ago. He bought them with his own money at the dollar store. (So sweet!!!) I'd never heard of them. We followed the directions on the bags and planted them in pots. Beautiful healthy plants are up and we are both excited to see what colors bloom in a few weeks. But, my goodness, what an easy way to a pot full of flowers! Now ranunculus will always have a sentimental value for me.

Hi, Erin. I was never a fan of gladiolus. It’s probably because of how I see them in gardens- either all stiff and tied to stakes or flopping every-which-way. Both very sad. But I’m now lukewarm because they make great cut flowers. I planted my mother’s gladiolus bulbs I found in the basement after she passed years ago, so how can you not like growing bulbs that remind you of your dear mother?!

Just found your channel and I am watching them all. I was never a fan of glads because they always reminded me of funerals. However, they are the flower of August birth month which is when I was born. Therefore I reluctantly planted them one year. Well they were spectacular and I decided I do like them. Unfortunately, something got to them and they never came back after the first year. Maybe someday I will try again. Love your videos and your gardens are making me jealous. Keep the vids coming. I love bulbs because they aren't a lot of fuss and can make a huge impact. The downsides can be that they are a one bloom show, waiting of course, and digging up if required. Glads are a mixed bag for me. My grandmother always had them when I was younger, so that was something I planned to grow. I love their foliage as well. They do flop a lot though and require some kind of staking/structure. The only other summer blooming bulbs I know of that you haven't mentioned are croccosmia, as several others have mentioned. I bought some a few years ago and ended up not planting them because I found out that they can take over an area if you don't stay on top of digging some out to keep them thinned out. Most of my beds are only 3-6' deep so I have a little more limited space, especially full sun space.

For years, I have grown my dahlias and glads together. It helps support my glads. And a flower arrangement with a mix of glads and dahlias is absolutely beautiful. I have had the same glad bulbs for over 15 years. They are light purple like yours and some yellow ones. Last year, I had a couple white ones, which were obviously some mutation of the light purple ones. They are so easy. I just pull them out in the fall, brush the dirt off. I don’t take the foliage off until they have dried. Sometimes they get stored in my cold room all winter with the foliage on. I just break them off in the spring and put the bulb in the ground. I just have this idea that the foliage feeds the bulb. I garden in New Brunswick, Canada, where the winters are long and the Springs are cool. I always enjoy your videos. Thanks for doing them

I, too, plant my gladiola bulbs amongst my dahlias. The dahlias provide structure and can help support the gladiolas. Both plants may have supports or not, and both need to be dug up in the fall for overwintering in the garage or wherever. The combination is beautiful and the dahlias hide the gladiola stems once their flowers are spent.

I planted 10 begonia bulbs early, in pots, in my bathtub. I was told they would start growing, then have time to bloom beautifully once they went outside. Well, I brought them outside and was so proud of what I'd done, until the night temps went down to freezing. I now have 3 plants that are hanging on and 5 that are all slimy. I brought them back in and am hoping to save them, but this spring in zone 5b 6a has been so wet and cold! Aargh!

When we lived in VA growing up, mama always grew gladiolus for our little country church my dad pastored. Each week different ladies would make beautiful arrangements from their gardens for Sunday service during Spring, Summer and Fall! It saved our little church money and the arrangements were always beautuful!

Camassia. A true set and forget early summer bulb. Big, hyacinth-like blue flowers. And native to the Midwest. (I want to say the Native Americans used them for food too.) My parents' garden has some that are a good 20 years old and they come back every year.

I ADORE Glads, my first bulbs I planted and I am now on year four of these GORGEOUS multi-coloured flowers. I LOVE them for attracting Hummingbirds. I planted hundreds and hundreds of bulbs this year and received so many compliments for the mass of flowers, but now they are gone. The lilies and other bulbs, I planted are making their way out the ground now. Just planted quite a few sunflower seeds earlier today.

Sooooo glad you are doing glads!!! I love them! I have several varieties that I grow just to cut and take to a sick friend, she is another flower lover!!! They are so luscious, so full and delicate! I can't say enough about them...but being in the FL panhandle, one nice thing...I don't have to dig them up, they winter over very nicely and they do so well. In fact, I have a small patch of white glads that I cut this morning for my friend and they are just so lovely. A couple of years ago I tried a new variety that was said to be red, but it was more a deep magenta, really a lovely deep color. Love how they multiply too!! Thanks, Erin...keep up the good work. Love watching you in the morning with my first cup of coffee to get a little inspiration for getting out there again with the weeds and flowers...gotta get the wine ready!! 🥰👍🏻❤

I always thought of glads as funeral flowers but tried them and they’ve become a favorite. They add so much color to the garden and I love cutting them for bouquets.

Same! I haven't grown glads, but want to try either acidenthera (peacock orchid) or Gladiolus Byzantinus, a rose colored more natural looking gladiolus. I think the "funeral glads" are just too formal for me.

I'm planting 100 gladiolus, almost all for cut flowers, plant them in succession, 10-15 bulbs every week, over month and half. They was my mom favourite flowers beside tulips and roses, and we cut them all and bring to her on cemetery. She was a huge gardener, I started gardening when she passed in thought that I'll just keep her plants alive as long as possible. Now I'm plant addict and I think a pretty good one

I have never had any affection for glads. I can appreciate them, when positioned well, in a larger landscape view, but individually I don’t find them appealing. Frankly, I have no plans to change my mind, because for Pete’s sake, I have to be able to pass up on SOME flowers. I don’t have the space to fit in all the ones I love as it is. Glad to follow you trying some new stuff. Liatris was one of my most successful bulbs. I ordered a 10 pack 9 years ago, they colonized, and I’ve moved them all over my yard. Bulbs are easy

I grew acidanthera for the first time last year and fell in love with them, one of my favourites now! In a container they were tall and sturdy and stood up to wind like no other. Saved the corms and pre sprouted them in water plus I bought a pack of 30 more. I grew glads amounts my zinnias and they were beautiful together. Gonna do it again this year! Best wishes, Dorothy

I think gladiolus are wonderful… with proper placement in the garden. They’re so beautiful but often need staking so I always plant mine behind something sturdier that can act like a natural stake. Then it’s just the pretty flower faces poking out. They’re just lovely! I love the look of asiatic lilies but for some reason I’ve never pulled the trigger on them. Going to have to give that a try. I've always liked glads, but hadn't grown them in many yrs. Then comes Danielle at Northlawn flower farm and a video of the most beautiful glads I'd ever seen. I planted 30 a few weeks ago, and am soooooooo looking forward to seeing them in my garden again, some are up about 3" now. Look forward to seeing your new choices too. Erin a great bulb to try is camassia! A beautiful blue lavender bloom on a sturdy steam, it naturalizes a bit slow but no support or staking needed. Looks great in mass planting. This year I am trying to grow freesia for the first time. I would love to see a progress on your Belgium fence if you think of it. Thank you.

Hi Erin, my garden is 3 years old in a new built house/property. I immediately planted lily bulbs both Asiatic and Oriental in honor of my mother. The following year I planted crocosmia corms. I freaking love the crocosmia. I have Lucifer, George Davidson and Emily McKenzie's. I really like them because they're sword-like foliage looks good all season and their airy bloom's look great against some of my more textured flowers in the garden. They naturalize and I'm okay with that, but do be aware. The lillies, alliums and crocosmia that I have are super easy and I love low-maintenance things. I fertilize in the spring and that is all they get. Last season my lilies reached nearly four feet high! Thanks for giving us great Garden tips in a very down-to-earth way. I so enjoy watching you. I feel like we could talk about gardening with wine anytime😸

I love gladiolus! They are some of the few flowers that don't feel overwhelmed in a dahlia bouquet. And I think they're beautiful in their own right. I also have great memories of buying them at the farmer's market on the square in Madison when I was in college. After watching this I picked up some of the white flowers.

Glads come back for me. Zone 5 Illinois. Yeah I was shocked. Planted in a bed open to a field so not really protected.

I totally use Glads in my perennial borders. Plant them in close clumps so they support each other. This year I pre-sprouted about 1/4 of my stock and when planting out early spring before last frost I mixed in some of my non-sprouted corms. Then I'll plant more in 2wk intervals 2 more times. Non stop colour to fill in the gaps. The beauty to Glads is when I dug them up I had double the amount of corms I started with. Super easy to store just toss in a mesh bag and hung in a cool dark closet for the winter. I have a whole new appreciation for Gladiolus. 💜👍🏻

Hi Erin, I personally have been won over! I garden in zone 8b but I grew up in the desert where gladiolas were mainly used in masses for funerals and therefore never appreciated them. NOW, I LOVE THEM! I have planted dozens and dozens at the back of multiple garden beds; along hedges, fences or rock walls to try and provide a background I can support them to so they stay more upright. Just seeing the beautiful array of large, colourful blooms from mid to late summer is worth planting them and forgetting them and let them do their majestic thing. I can't wait for them to multiply

I grow all these bulbs! I swear by growing them it makes life so much easier. Even better they're Amazing cut flowers. I will have to say the dark purple glads always get attacked by thrips first atleast that's my experience AND Danielle's experience as well, so I don't grow those ones anymore. The brodiaea I had planted in the fall a couple of years ago and they bloom in June for me right along with the asiatics. Those have a excellent vase life. I love them 💗

I tried a few lily plants last year and loved them, so I purchased some bulbs through the mail. They create a low hedge. I'm hoping the critters don't get them, as I forgot to plant them with a piece of chicken wire just below the ground surface. This technique worked well for my tulips!!! I like glads, but I don't like having to dig up and replant, although I'm doing that with the few dahlias that I have. Maybe I will give glads a go too!

Love your videos. You garden like I do, no fussy stuff just flowers you love or are curious about. One more ‘critter’ for the lilies. Lily Beetles. You may not have them in your area but they can be an evil scourge. They look like oblong lady beetles without the spots and they can strip an asiatic or oriental lily in just a few days if left unchecked. Planting bare root bulbs can help prevent them and being careful if someone gives you lilies. The potted ones in nurseries are ones to avoid. Once you have them systemic is the most thorough way to get rid of them. Or going out twice a day and picking them off. Didn’t mean to go so long but I have heartbreak memories of them destroying the blooms. 🥺

I felt the same way about iris, a friend of mine "rehomed(stole) one from the side of the road and it bloomed this year, now I'm in love. We are a zone 7b in WNC, and I can leave them in the ground, so lots of bulb planting this fall. If glads were sturdy. Here it's really wear you put them. So floppy...

I meant to succession plant but our spring has been so awful that my succession planting turned into two plantings of 50 bulbs. If I love them, I’ll try to get the timing right next year. Hi Erin! one of my favorite 'bulbs' to plant are dwarf iris. They bloom in the middle.if my tulip season and last longer than other bulbs, as they usually have from 3 to 5 blooms coming in during their season. They also don't have to be tended after and I can share them with fellow gardeners after a few seasons. Multiple colors and variations, too. 'Smart' is one of my favorites as well as 'Bumblebee' and 'Bright Eyes' . Oh, I live in zone 5 and our springs can have freeze-temos till mid to late May .. ❤❤

Another bulb you may want to consider growing is calla lilies, they're so beautiful, even the leaves have really nice patterns. I grow them in pots. My favorite type is Picasso 😊

Love gladiola! Planted 90 blubs summer before last. New puppy liked them more, dug each blub out and left them on the sidewalk one by one as a present for me. Hope you have great success with yours.

I have been growing acidanthera in pots for years.. they readily multiply. Fabulous scent. I have been working on building up a good amount of them, and this year planted lots and lots in a narrow border.. They really can't be beat.

I am in Michigan (6a). I planted gladiolus around 14 years ago in my grandmas garden and of her neighbors, I planted them up against the house and they come back every year,Just depends on where you plant them.

I know this video is from last year's season, but just had to have some input. The sunset Lily was the first Lily that I planted when we bought our house 20 years ago. It still does very well, but has not spread much at all. I also had bought the Peacock Lilies, with no knowledge about them. I just remember that they smelled AH-MAZING! I need to find more and remember to pot them in a group & have them on my deck. I was never really a fan of Glads, but I found some bulbs this year in a peach and a white that I want to try my hand at for the first time. I'm trying Ranunculus one more time this year. I have no problem getting them to sprout, it's getting them to the bloom stage that is the struggle for me.

Another great bulb that I've never seen other people grow is sparaxis. It reminds me of a tiny lily only more open. The one I have is a cantaloupe color with a burgundy throat and a dark yellow eye.. They are hardy in my Zone 8b, California Central Coast garden where I grow them in a pot so that they don't get pulled out before they bloom because I always forget about them until they bloom. A real bright spot in early spring since they are often the first bloom other than daffodils.

Martigon lilys! They are fantastic early blooming lily. Also 4-5’ tall. 30-40 blooms per stalk. You will love them.

Same here! I planted lilies in the ground, and peacock orchid and tuberose in pots. I also accidentally received red callas in an order, so I’ve got those too.They’ll add to my annual elephant ears and cannas. So exciting 🤩 Have you ever tried begonias from a tuber/bulb/whatever? I love them. I have left them in containers that I’ve overwintered and they reliably pop up when the time is right. They are so much tougher than you’d think.

Cannas are a fav of mine. They come in so many colors and heights, and the hummingbirds just love them. I deadhead spent blooms to keep them looking tidy and whether they’re in pots or in the garden, they make a huge impact. Asiatic lilies are another fav but I call them “one shot wonders.” Even so, I can’t imagine a Summer without the smell of Lilies wafting through the beds. I have a Yellow Trumpet Lily that gets so tall and majestic; the blooms are just beautiful and it’s planted next to my back porch so I can enjoy the wafting scent many times a day.

I think glads are pretty and remind me of my grandma, but being in zone 4 and trying to make things easier to take care of, I can only admire them in someone else's garden. 😀 I feel the same about dahlias... absolutely gorgeous and one of my favorite flowers, but, I just don't have the time and energy to dig them up and replant every year. Yours are amazing Erin! Several years ago I planted hundreds of tulips in wooden boxed beds right up close to my house and unfortunately it brought in an unbeknownst-to-me at the time pest into our property: voles! And they have been terrorizing me since! If I had known then what I know now, I never would have planted those tulips. Only a few survived, and they are gorgeous, but not worth the hundreds of dollars and effort lost to voles of those and my other plantings around the property... they eat a lot of different things! We have a huge, old growth forest around our property, and I think they came from there, so don't let me scare any potential tulip planters out there that may not be in the same situation as me! I did learn, however, that there are certain bulbs that they don't eat. They leave my daffodils and hyacinths completely alone, and someday I might plant some alliums, because I hear they don't like those either. I've never had a problem with my liatris (gayfeather) corms either, but those are in a totally different area of the property that I've never seen voles in. They may just not like them, too, I don't know. I have catmint in that area, too, so that may be a deterrent. I hear most rodents don't like mint of any kind. The butterflies and goldfinches love liatris, and it's so pretty! My hyacinths are blooming and smelling so good right now. On warm days I like to open the windows and let the scent in, as they are in a boxed bed just below my front windows. Oh, I also love peonies! They are very long-lived and come in different colors. My only mistake with those is that I should have planted them on the less-windy side of the house, as they have long stems with heavy blooms that I have to stake every year. Maybe I will carefully move them someday. Live and learn, eh?

Crocus! So simple, cheap and commonly found at almost any garden or big box store. Blooms in the snow just when I don’t think I can take another day of cold and dark dreary winter days. After it’s done blooming, you do absolutely nothing with them and the next year they come back and you may even get some extras. I grow a lot of spring bulbs but Crocus make my heart happy every Spring.

Sorry pushed wrong button. You'll love the Murielae. Glads aren't my cup of tea. They tend to get heavy and flop especially with heavy rains. I think of them as gaudy. Sorry you glad lovers. I want to try the Brodiaea. I've pushed the envelope on the south side of my house leaving the Acidanthera in the ground in my zone 5 and have had them come back the next year. Depends on how harsh winter is. Looking forward to seeing your bulbs in bloom!

Glads were something I loved as a child and insisted on planting in awkward rows next to the front door (in Mequon Wis). I also remember them being strictly annuals. So you can imagine my surprise when, in the 6b Hudson Valley property I bought, I found clumps of sword shaped leaves coming up in one of the beds. At first I thought they might be crocosmia. Howevre, they turned out to be flaming red glads that had obviously been there for a long time (we are talking big clumps). As clumps they actually work pretty well as border flowers. Evidently if you have just the right conditions sometimes glads will survive in the colder zones. These are in a sharply drained area at the foot of an enormous rock outcropping that faces south. I am really curious about this so am trying some other glads and some crocosmia that are marginally hardy in my zone. In terms of easy bulbs, I recommend lycoris squamigera (Surprise Lily or, my favorite, Naked Ladies).

Totally agree - more 'bulbs'! I can recommend planting apricot 'Gypsy Queen' hyacinths, 'Cathy Heath' narcissi, (and Princesse Irene tulips), among drifts of Geum 'Mai Tai'. (These same bulbs could potentially look really pretty, planted in among your Hakonechloa grass tufts, adding colour before the grass gets going.)

I love my glads!! I live in southern Indiana and they are not supposed to be hardy here, but I planted them like 15 yrs ago and have NEVER dug them to store for winter. Mine are red and hot orange and they bloom around the 4th of July and I call them my fireworks!! Gorgeous every single year!!

Just got thirty acidanthera bulbs at Aldi for two bucks. I have some lilies I grew inside(!!!) For two years before being able to plant them out. Now they grow like seven to eight feet tall with furry growing tips and buds, in orange, spotted black, and deep purple.

I thought I didn’t like glads until I received some bulbs as a gift. Now they’re one of my favorites. The bumble bees are always buzzing about, lovely pastel shades, great cut flowers, and they overwinter for me in southeastern PA.

I love gladiolus, just never grew them. My grandmother’s neighbor used to plant a long row of gladiolus in front of her house. It was a magnificent show all summer long that’s what I loved about them. Great impact from far away. I’m planting them this year intermittently with dahlias, delphinium and foxgloves as a background in the berm. I love those royal sunset lilies. I got 3 bulbs last year. Planted them up and my dog came by biting the tip off one but wow did they come back with a vengeance this year.

I planted some anemones this fall and am loving the flower display right now. I've never grown them before and don't know how long the flowers will last. They've been blooming for over two weeks now. It looks like our unseasonably high temps are stressing them a bit. As to glads, they're pretty to look at but I get frustrated with them in bouquets because you have to keep picking off the flowers almost every day as they decay from bottom to top. I have never grown them but I'm not sure they super easy care because I expect they need to be staked.

Acidanthera are super easy, even in my crappy San Antonio soil. They pair with various types of elephant ears nicely. Mine are well over a foot now, and I planted them late for my zone. Daylilly are also super easy and just keep blooming all summer.
