Hey all, there was a rare fatality on the South Ridge recently. I'm not sure if they were going up or down it but this highlights that there are no easy or safe routes and all require scrambling and involve a risk of falling from height. Stay safe out there and don't forget there are mountain guides and leaders who can take you up to the summit safely.

I did this ascent in winter conditions many years ago, brilliant day. A friend and I made our way down via the West Face by dropping into snow drift after snow drift. The route is impossible in any other conditions. Great memories. R.I.P Mark Brandish, I enjoyed our walks and climbs.

A quick note to all Tryfan fans: it's not 'Try-fan', with a stress on the 'fan' bit. It's 'Tryfan' where, in essence, all the letters have the same weight. Good job on 'Bochlwyd', though!

South Ridge is defo easier than the North Ridge. Some ppl go up the gully I came down at the end of the footage but it's quite boring. I've never met anyone who has struggled on the S/Ridge in good weather and if you really like it, you could come back and try the harder North Ridge another time. Hi great video.. one of my favourate routes is assending teh South Ridge then desending the Weatern gully strait down to the car park at Ogwen Lake..What size day sack and first aid kit did you take with you??
@thebaldscramblerАй бұрын
I've got an Osprey Mutant bag, mainly because it has a huge chamber that holds my drone and other camera equipment. Custom first aid kit - I chucked out most of the plasters and some other stuff and put in a torniquet; If I gash myself open on a sharp rock or whatnot and I'm bleeding out, I'm sure I'll appreciate that more than a plaster ;-).

Thanks for taking the time to film and post this video. The drone footage was particularly impressive, it's amazing how capable these devices are, I expect they also create some anxiety about possibly losing them as well! Wonderful and beautiful Welsh landscapes and scenery.

Snowdonia was like a second home to me in the army . ( Welsh guards ) . Along with the beacons . Great preparation has to be emphasised in these vids though . At least one change of clothing , 1st aid kit , food supply and most importantly , plenty of warm thermal clothing . The conditions can change so quickly . Also in my opinion , never go up on your own . There was a fatality in the news this year . lone experienced walker got into trouble . My favourite route is Tryfan north route ascent , and south route up bristly ridge and the glyderau . My favourite in north Wales is the Rhinogydd .Bloody hard , but massively rewarding .

@thebaldscrambler Жыл бұрын
Thank you. The footage was filmed on a weekday in late November, so it was nice and quiet with a only a few ppl on the summit. It will be much busier on a summer weekend but most will go up the north ridge and down the south ridge. I usually go early (set off 7am) to avoid the crowds in the summer.

I had issues with the drone's controllers nudging stuff in my bag and the drone going off on a suicide mission, so I had to hold the controller in my hand but I've just purchased a shield that protects the controllers and screen so hopefully I can scramble and leave the drone to follow me. @thebaldscrambler Жыл бұрын
Thank you. I have seen a few dogs on the south ridge before, not many - maybe 3 or 4 over the last few years, but I can't say if your dog would be okay as it is a scrambling route and very rugged. My drone is the DJI Mini 3 Pro with 3 spare batteries, as they don't last long in the wind!

I am sixty years of age and I've done the watkins, the pyg up Snowden, with no problem, I would love to do this one, however, not sure of my abilities.
@RobertGilogly Жыл бұрын
I did this solo a couple of months ago. ( which I wouldn't advise, as its very easy to lose the paths) It is much more challenging than Snowdon because from the col it really is a scramble. I am pretty fit but was absolutely exhausted when I finished. My advice would be train hard for it and make sure you do it in optimal conditions. I really wouldn't fancy being up there if the weather turned. It is a mountain that requires the uptmost respect.

Is there any bad exposure points on the south ridge or all just standard scrambling
@thebaldscrambler7 ай бұрын
There is one spot where there is a steep drop just to the side. I went with a first-timer last year who crawled on his knees for about 2 metres on this section as he felt uncomfortable. The rest of the route, he found a breeze.
@thebaldscrambler7 ай бұрын
It's about 30 metres from the summit.

Hi dan, was wondering how difficult this would be for a first time scrambler. Also do you have any tips for down climbing?
@thebaldscrambler Жыл бұрын
Hi, while the route is a grade 1 scramble, there is still the potential for a fall or wandering off route, so I think a complete beginner should go on a fine weather day when the rock is dry and visibility is excellent; also when it's busy so that there will be other people on the mountain. You could always take the path from Ogwen Cottage up to the stone wall and make a decision there about whether you want to summit or go over the wall and take the path back to the A5 at the Gwern Gof Uchaf campsite; that's a lovely hiking route in itself.

@AlexTunstall2 жыл бұрын
Depends how fast you want to be! I think a healthy time is probably around 3 hours up, 2 down. Add a few hours for good measure to give yourself plenty of time
@thebaldscrambler2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've been itching to get on the mountains but the weather has been rubbish lately. Took me about 3 hours to get to the summit but I had to faff about with the drone, tripods and GoPro. Going down Main/West gully is a really quick way to get off the mountain; about 45 minutes. A decent down the south ridge will take a bit longer - up to 1.5. Allow 4-5 hours overall if you stop for lunch on the summit etc.
@markjones127 Жыл бұрын
@@thebaldscrambler There's a fell race which starts at the summit and comes down west gully to the road, the record is an incredible 8 mins by the man who still organises the race every year, when he set the record he broke both his wrists, he's a bit of a legend in his own lifetime in local fell running circles, nice video btw!

Daniel -- Many thanks for your guidance up the South Ridge of Tryfan. This video should be shown to all Army Cadets the evening before they carry out the ascent. There are many opportunities to do map reading on route. I like your excellent advice to start on the easiest route. The British Army does not appreciate dead Cadets, neither do parents. A sure way to get Court Marshalled! I jumped from Adam to Eve (at the top), but no sooner had I done so, the wind picked up and it was too dangerous for anyone else to have a go. But I'll leave the North Face to the professionals!

If you keep just to the right of the established south ridge scramble, you can take in some really interesting climbs/scrambling, which is much tougher than grade1… I’ve explored this mountain a lot - it never fails to deliver great days… Adam & Eve has to be done…
