Dear Daniel -- Sadly youtube has lost my previous comment (typical), I try to recap. I really liked your „baldy” website. La Sportiva TX4 has Vibram Megagrip rubber compound introduced in 2013 for special wet traction - as a downside, it may wear faster than other compounds (25-35% more). I usually test the soles at home on a wet tile for wet traction, it gives a pretty good indication to real life performance esp. on wet rocky slab. I also have a question - you were mentioning the GTX membrane of your TX4 failed after a year - how much mileage was that? 100? 200? My experience is negative as to longevity of GTX -- 1. often GTX already stretched or damaged at shoe assembly 2. GTX tends to wear esp. where you flex your shoe after 100 km roughly. The only way to counter this is 1. heavy water-repellant treatment 2. thick leather boot, ALSO AT THE TONGUE, WHERE IT FLEXES. My Hanwag Alaska GTX 23 years old (over 3000 km) boots leak in snow after 3-4 hours only - they get a lot of wax and care. I am really interested in your impressions. Thanks, Edmond

Last September I was scrambling on the Cuillin Ridge, and Aonach Eagach. A week later I tripped and fell in a perfectly flat car park. If you were to show a video showing car and pedestrian accidents in 2023, and title it, what's wrong with our roads, would you expect us to stay in, or only go out with a guide. I'm a relatively experienced scrambler, but I learned on my own, and that was part of the thrill of it. Learning to scramble on my own gave me a sense of achievement that's impossible to explain, and no one can take that from me now, so who am I to warn people of what to do, or what not to do, and I certainly wouldn't scare monger. There's Nothing Going Wrong on Tryfan, just people having accidents like they have always have, and unfortunately, always will. Enjoy our mountains people, they are free, and will always be there for us.

Did this route today , exactly as you described steep start boggy low and a nice scramble over slippery rocks , sadly low cloud made for no views from the top and the shelter was welcome to have lunch out of the wind. I’d recommend poles for the descent to take the weight off of your knees. Great video 👍🏾

Did this route again today we climbed the slime wall in the alcove and another slime wall just after We took the left hand rib in section 3 and the scrambling was absolutely fantastic and prolonged the left hand rib is the way to go on this route if you want lots of rock
@thebaldscrambler22 күн бұрын
Great! What grade would you give the left rib?
@naveedarshad560818 күн бұрын
Same grade 2S but we scaled a couple of steep walls which were definitely grade3, the left rib is longer and more sustained scrambling than the right rib, there are a many lines to choose next time you do Bryant’s gully please take the left rib if visibility is decent you will not be disappointed
@naveedarshad560818 күн бұрын
The slime wall aka the trap is easily scaled on the right hand corner I found it easier to climb than taking the right hand wall tbh I can send you a video of my mate scaling it but don’t understand how I can forward it on KZbin

I have the wildfire gtx first Gen and I wore them out outdoors in the good sense. Took me probably 10 years to wear them out, lots of scrambling, 100s of miles of hiking. Never got 1 blister. The old ones had vibram soles and I never had an issue with slipping. I just got the new version with the Pomoca soles so I hope they don't cause too much of an issue. (I don't like change lol) They do look narrower in the toe (I have wide feet) so I'm probably gonna put my shoe stretchers in for a bit to widen up the toe box. Hopefully that helps Good review mate, that looks like a good scramble that I wish I was near.

Also, in terms of great beginner scrambles - the top of Watkin Path? That's a nice easy one - again, best with clear conditions (sadly, we had clag both times). Also good, easy scrambles on Great Gable, Helvellyn (i.e. the summit scramble, obviously Striding Edge doesn't necessarily qualify as a beginner scramble) and, for real beginners or kids, the Mickledore mini-scramble on the way up Scafell Pike is lots of fun without any real risk. And another vote for Hall's Fell Ridge too - but stay on the ridge, don't try to go round the left or right sides as there are sheer drops and the rock gets slippy in the wet. I motored up nicely in the dry, back when I barely had any scrambling experience, but a few years ago very nearly slid off, when trying to edge around the left side for some stupid reason!
@LeonieClaire-s6q28 күн бұрын
Went here recently for the first time. Agree that in fairly clear conditions it would be a great intro to scrambling, but when we were there it was very low cloud for the first few hours - did the whole scramble through thick mist and although most of it was highly enjoyable, towards the summit we strayed into some harder stuff - which was doable but very slippy and required gi-normous steps up in a couple of places which we struggled with and ended up having to sort of squirm up on our stomachs! - later, looking down, we realised there were easier options. So, I would suggest beginner scramblers save it for a day with good visibility so they can pick a good line - or go with someone who knows the route options. Loved the mountain though, especially the views from the summit once the weather cleared. But as always, mate, great video! 👍

I've been to N. Wales loads of times and have never experienced anything like it. What I suspect is that there are quite a few English words that don't have an Welsh equivalent and what people hear is a mixture of English and Welsh and assume that the speaker is changing to Welsh. Most of it is probably confirmation bias.

The biggest risk to people going up Tryfan is their fitness…preparation and planning prevents piss poor performance, don’t underestimate this mountain, just because you have been up Snowdon does not qualify you for the rest of the peaks. The weather can change in a heartbeat in Snowdonia and when, as it does, you’re caught on Tryfan the whole dynamic changes. Get some knowledge and get some experience. If you haven’t even done Crib Goch in a variety of weather then you’re not ready for Tryfan
@thebaldscramblerАй бұрын
Personally I think Moel Siabod's ridge is a good introduction to scrambling, followed by Y Gribin (Glyders) and then the south ridge of Tryfan. Alot fo ppl jump straight onto the North Ridge but it's quite an undertaking, esp if the cloud rolls in.
@jonnyosteo5984Ай бұрын
I don't know how much your drone cost Daniel but... it is paying you back in spades. Magnificent shots of my favourite part of Snowdonia. In the UK the beauty of this area is only beaten by parts of the Cuillins imho. Like a previous comment stated - I can't believe that no one has suggested this Dolmen Ridge scramble - the route looks amazing and I intend to do it next year. Keep up the good work sir 🫡
@thebaldscramblerАй бұрын
Thank you, and for the coffee - that's very much appreciated ;-). Yes, the drone is one the best purchases I've ever made. I was in the Rhinogs last month and got some stunning footage of me scrambling up Hywel Ridge, with lots of sweeping drone movements (it's on the channel). I think I paid just under a grand for the drone with some spare batteries, a fast charger and a few other bits. All the best.

I always go up towards Glyder Fawr, descend the scree to Llyn y Cwn and then take the path down to the Llanberis Pass nr Gwastadnant. I followed your route yesterday thanks for the great advice but I have a question. On the 3rd final rock section I followed the right hand rib upto the top but was very tempted by the monstrous left rib/arete. Have you ever been on the left side on the final section ? I seen a scree gully on the left as I started climbing the right rib, the gully looked like easy access to the left side but after that I have no idea what’s involved

Great video, I use the Rakoon 2.1 and I love it, I use double poles since it gets a bit scary in the winds, double poling makes most modern tents almost bomb proof. Hope that helps other campers.

Enjoyed the video, but when you're not on screen yourself, it would be helpful to include something that gives an idea of the scale and gradient of what we're seeing. I don't know the place so I've no idea if an outcrop of rock is 3ft high or 20ft.
