Thanks a lot for the review. The only problem is that they don’t sell half sizes in shops like Gooutdoors/Blacks etc. I plan to buy them for few long distance trekking, would you recommend them for this kind of activity as well? Many thanks again.

i did the rhyd ddu path when i was 8! absolute killer, it was freezing and on the way down there was a massive snowstorm. i got a hot chocolate at the cafe though, which to an 8 year old is incredible motivation. it took us about six hours to get up and down. it was too windy for me to summit, but my dad climbed to the top and it was so cool! me and my mum are planning to go again later this year, snowdon is totally my favourite mountain in the uk.

Am I correct in thinking there is a train from Caernavon stopping at the bottom of both the Snowdon Ranger path and the Rhydd Dhu Path so one could go up the one and down the other
@thebaldscrambler20 сағат бұрын
Yes, the train stops at both stations which are at the start of the routes. The trains allow hop-on and hop-off subject to seat availabiity. I spoke to a guard last year and he said they allocate some seats for those wanting to travel between intermediate stations on a first come, first served basis, the rest are pre-bookable for those wanting to take the whole route. I'm not sure of prices and times etc but I'm sure it's online.

I did this almost exactly 10 years ago, with my husband, both in our 50's, but down only. We had a one-way ticket up and hoped to goodness we would be ok coming down. Took us 5 hours and my favourite memory is of being passed about halfway down by two ladies older than us, who looked disdainfully at the two exhausted wrecks leaning on a fence! Glad we did it though, and it was lovely to see it again on your video☺️👍

@@thebaldscrambler Many years ago I remember taking a friend and one of his friends on the horseshoe. Went up Crib coch, then down via Y Lliwedd - just as we were summiting Y Lliwedd, a Lynx helicopter (with tricycle undercarriage, but in army flight school colours) landed with one wheel on the summit and nose wheel hanging over the edge. The left back door slid open and the crewman in the back frantically waving us towards the helicopter - (I presumed my friends friend was the reason for the helicopter) all three of us ran up towards the summit and just as we were 30 feet from the Lynx, I could see the instructor grin, turn to the pupil, then crewman grinned and raised two fingers at us before the helicopter tipped forward and rolled into the crater. I remember thinking 'Jesus, they're dead!' before seeing the Lynx swing around and do a low pass over us and a 'wing waggle' - I'm sure the crew laughed for days about this! Bastards! Lol

Have you ever considered using climbing shoes? There so light you could easily carry them in a backpack. I bought my TX4's (on your recommendation) from Go Outdoors. They beat any UK price by 10%; got mine for £128!
@thebaldscramblerКүн бұрын
That's a good price! I did think about it before but I think just one pair would be best for me.
@gb.snippets2 күн бұрын
Idea... Sell them as "The Famous Bald Scrambler shoes (including old TX4's)" and buy a new pair of TX4's?
@thebaldscramblerКүн бұрын
Gonna get the TX4s resoled as I found a resoler that can put a similar sole on them (Vibram, with dotted lugs) and the rest of the boot is fine, it's just the lugs that have worn out. I'll probably do a video in the future once I've got it done and completed a few scrambles.
@gb.snippetsКүн бұрын
@@thebaldscrambler Sometimes I'm questioning the importance of lugs. Look at climbing shoes, they don't have any lugs at all. Do you feel a difference in grip now the lugs have worn down?
@thebaldscramblerКүн бұрын
Those TX4s were grippy from the moment I got them as they have shallow ish dotted lugs spaced quite far apart and great rubber but sure, as they've worn down they perform a bit better on rock but they're getting dangerous on grass/mud now, hence why I need them resoled. Many of the routes I go on have grassy approaches/walk-offs, often steep, sometimes wet, so I need something that will dig in and provide some traction as well as being good on rock; the best of both worlds.

Have you experience of Walsh shoes, really fell running shoes but I have done the 3000,s 3 times, twice in the same pair and even climbed on slate. remarkable grip, close fitting but I have narrow feet. and the bonus is tbey are made in the UK. Also very good price. I dont get up to Snowdonis now more than perhaps once every couple of years but your channel is much enjoyed.

Thanks very much, your review is massively appreciated, would love to hear any and all thoughts on other shoes. Shoe rubber is such a hard thing to judge until you are on the rock, is so frustrating! I find the rock type in Snowdonia really requires good rubber, especially in the wet, so I'd love to hear what does and doesn't work. Years ago I had some Inov-8 trail running shoes I loved cos the rubber was very grippy. I'd feel very clever skipping along Crib Goch edge in shoes that were very performance-enhancing compared to others. But then they changed the rubber in later versions (cheaper I guess) and they were positively dangerous, it was embarrassing. You genuinely couldn't run safely on wet road let alone a mountain! It was like having a soap-bar attached to your foot. I don't know why shoe brands have to change shoes so often, just as soon as you've found a good one they change the design and ruin it...! On a more positive note, thanks for you fantastic channel and website. It has inspired us to try more scrambles, including Sinister gulley which was a great experience 👍

Thanks for posting a great film showing the Llanberis route. My wife and I did this walk back on June 12th. and had a wonderful time with decent views at the top. We are both in our 60's and not particularly used to hill walking of this level. We managed it without any real problems just taking our time and going slow and steady! One thing I looked for but could not determine was the legendary and scary Crib Goch route which I would never do as I feel it might make me freeze with the dual sheer drops each side! Is it easy to see from the summit? Perhaps you could do a video showing where it is? Having done Scafell Pike a couple of years ago we are thinking of trying to do Ben Nevis in future!

Glad to hear you had a lovely time! If you decide to go again, I recommend the Ranger Path; it's a similar difficulty but with fewer people and views to the other side of Snowdon. @thebaldscrambler3 күн бұрын
Sure, there's a path in the valley next to the afon glaslyn stream from the campsite leading up to Pen y Pass car park which is the starting point for the Pyg and Miner Tracks. It will add about 4km ish to the trek (one way) and nearly 300m of extra height gain. I normally park in the laybys next to the Pen Y Gwryd hotel that costs £4/6hrs or £8/12hrs coins only or parking app (never tried the app). No need to walk in the road, there's a path that runs below the A4086 road up to Pen y Pass, takes about 20 minutes.

Nah I’ve experienced a bit of premature fatigue and even breathlessness at the start of some climbs. I’ve always walked through it, and been dancing like a spring chicken 20 minutes later. We all have different metabolisms, and one size doesn’t fit all. I’ve done Snowdon twice and Ben Nevis three times in the past ten years, but the scariest and most difficult for me was Mount Triglav in Slovenia. Not for the faint hearted, even in summer.
@peterigrenyi91763 күн бұрын
@Sydopath well, you need to know yourself. Exhausted is not what you discribe in my book. Anyway as long as people are safe and dont need to be carried down the mountain by Mountain Rescue all is well! As for mountains, yeah Slovenia is in different keague to UK. I myself am Slovakian and Hogh Tatras, even Low tatras offer mountains considerably more demanding than any of the UK "climbs"
