I was able to connect using both Teleport and WireGuard but I'm unable to hit any of the local IP addresses. What am I missing?

Unfortunately, it seems like if you have a Unifi Express, it will not be possible to create site to site VPNs or even teleport for any of the other product lines. Which is a massive shortcoming in my opinion.

how do i know if my MacBook pro is connected to he VPN, my i.p didn't change?

Click on WiFi icon on top right corner, then Wi-Fi Settings and click on VPN. There you can see if you are connected.

both end should have unifi gateway console acting as a gateway, i believe?

Only for Site to Site VPN.
