It helps to remember that the vocal is essentially a missing instrument and a complex one at that. It will tend to fill the song. I find it helpful to use an acapella for that reason. There are plenty of top notch beats that barely structure at all, often because they work in studio with the artist and have access to that particular instrument. Some don't like to use an acapella. But I have found it can give me many arrangement ideas based on the vocal cues.

Good video, Chris! Structure is important! As you said, It's good to remove/add elements through the beat! Sometimes I add unique features on second and third verse or changes to the chorus. I like to keep the beat simple, but every time the million dollar question is: how simple is too simple? :) Keep it up, I love this type of videos, there's always something to learn.

The textures you can achieve just removing stuff tho, this definitely gave me some sick ideas for sure. Sometimes I think about some shit to try and its almost like these are made to point me in a direction that doesn't throw my beat left field haha. Good shit again! I also dig how a lot of these newer joints aren't rushed and get straight into it, its cool to know that me myself don't always have to jump right in and not take breaths as I make a beat. I feel like that's missing in a lot of music lately. I like that train of thought man it's definitely refreshing, have a good ass day!
@ChrisPunsalanTV7 жыл бұрын

Awesome stuff as always Chris! When I’m structuring beats, I just set out to do the hook first and then take away things from it for the intro, verses, and outro. Occasionally, I do something completely different for a bridge too
@ChrisPunsalanTV7 жыл бұрын
Alec Musial I’m still having a really hard time with bridges, they just never have the right “feeling.” Any tips?
@Musialproductions7 жыл бұрын
ChrisPunsalanTV Biggest thing to announce a bridge in a beat is you need to change the chord progression. Add 1 or 2 new sounds to distinguish the section too. Basically treat it as something in between a small arrangement change in the beat and a B section
@ChrisPunsalanTV7 жыл бұрын
I try that, but it always sounds like a completely different song. Do you listen to Pharrell? His bridges always sound like a continuation of the song, but you know the feeling is different. And sometimes I always get the feeling it's transposed up a semitone. i'll keep messing around though. Thanks!
@Musialproductions7 жыл бұрын
Yeah! Pharrell uses the same instrumentation, but in an organic way. That's why he's the best. Take "Last Night" JT as an example. Chord progression for the bridge is completely different from the verse and the same strings are holding the chords instead of playing a background line. It creates a different vibe, but you feel like you're in the same song (and that strings lick transitioning back to the verse is astonshingly good)

Great video... I dont do it quite like you but the same concept. I build our the entire beat in 8 bars then loop it, take out elements like the bass or kick or synth etc here and there to keep interesting. It’s a great formula for banging out beats quickly too. I just started doing this and I’ve been able to bang out about 22 beats in the last 2 weeks. Way better than how I was doing it last year.

i think you can sell beats better when they're structured, but imho the best beats are the "unstructured" for example with a lot of effects, grossbeat && because it makes them more dynamic. a good artist can destroy such a beat way more than a normal structured beat. IMO

piano lessons helped me with practice and getting familiar with the keys. If I didn't take piano lessons then I wouldn't have practiced as much as I did and got comfortable with the keys.
