Here you go! two things: 1) TJ at vidIQ let me snag you a 98% discount here: vidiq.com/nateblack 2) I've opened a second group of time slots for consults and audits! You can book one here: radicalyt.com/ - this might be the last time I offer audits like this. Since it's still early testing, I've discounted prices to make it more accessible and provide me valuable feedback. If you were wanting personalized help from me, NOW is a great time to get it!

I like this approach. It's not the fix your titles or fix your thumbnails to get more clicks approach. This is truly what I have learned with KZbin as well, it's not the gimmicks, it's actually the content that helps a channel grow and get monetized propertly.

Another great video, Nate! I just realised something (literally minutes before I watched this); whilst I'm doing crafts & plenty of the big channels I'm subbed to do various different types of crafts, if you go back to their early days, they had a focus on one craft in particular & that's what I need to do. Focus on one before I branch out & that's exactly what I'm going to do!

I think my biggest weakness right now is posting more quality videos more often. I've fallen into the same lifestyle that I had in college where once classes were done for the day I had lost all my energy. I'm getting that same energy now working a fulltime job.

I've learned a lot from you. We are committed to our niche (end of life healthcare) because that's our business focus. The only reason for us to monetize on KZbin is to be able to cover the cost to improve recording quality and hire video editors. Our goal is to have people feel "helped". We've got a long way to go and I know it. But input like yours is helpful.

In my circle of content creator friends I've basically been screaming this "bring value" mantra from the mountain tops. So many of the videos that get released within that group are of the "here is my opinion with absolutely nothing to back it up" variety, and they always get minimal views. But, every time those same creators make videos going covering news, giving updates on what's going on in our niche, or other valuable info, those videos pop off. It's so simple, yet so many can't see it. Bring the value, and the views will come.

Great video Nate! Recently I was struck by a series of thoughts along these same lines. It occurs to me that successful channels have created a paradigm in which their content flows from. This as opposed to channels that have to create content within a conflicting paradigm. That is why I have been moving toward fostering a lifestyle that content flows from.

I sometimes struggle with the "Belonging" thing I think. I am good at helping, giving people information in an easy to understand and compact form, but I feel like there must be an additional thing I am missing. Because people apprechiate the information but then leave as soon as they get it. Maybe it's the curse of an educational niche?

Haha I am one of those who started KZbin on a topic I knew next to nothing about. I don’t regret it, but I also would not recommend it. I was learning KZbin, videography, storytelling, editing…while also learning multiple species of fishing, on different bodies of water…during different seasons…and weather…sonar interpretation…and tournament fishing…from a kayak…that involved learning various DIY projects to rig it…it’s been a lot but surprisingly very enjoyable chaos

Here’s your Lego channel idea, Nate: LegoInTheShadows / BackgroundLego (something like that) where you talk to other creators from all stripes (not just on KZbin) and talk with them about their favourite kits and how Lego has helped their creative process. I feel like you’d have some fantastic questions surrounding work/life balance, tools (like Lego) for creativity, taking creative breaks, and generally just about being excited over a shared interest. I’m less interested in the kits themselves but very interested in *who* I might know / want to know and how Lego has been a part of their process. Keep up the awesome work!

Learning how to speak so people listen would be very valuable! One of the things I struggle with is fluid delivery of what I'm trying to say. I plan my videos but I don't write out a speech word for word... I don't want to sound like I'm reading from a script but also I have a lot to say and don't want to forget it all. Any tips on how you practice delivery would be great as well :)

I have one question that i think a lot of small creators are interested in. If i have 0 views, 0 subscribers and i want to make a video about a topic that doesn't exist on KZbin, where will my viewers find my video? If i want to make a video about how people life's changed from 1950 to 2023. There are no keywords or specific audience for this. How can i make this work? Or how will this work on KZbin, how KZbin will find me viewers for my video, assuming it's a good video for everybody

Yes, extremely helpful as always....I was right, I have to always try to improve something....even if it looks like nobody is watching my videos or even worse, instead of gaining views, and advancing, my channel seems to be doing completely the opposite, losing viewers until I go back to almost 0. Quality over channel owner progress satisfaction 🤔

Talking to a camera by myself in a room and wondering what my apt neighbors are thinking is my biggest challenge! I end up speaking really quiet and lose the enthusiasm. I also don’t know how to read off my notes efficiently while sounding natural. So hard to keep going…

I've felt the same struggle, especially filming outdoors when people are around. One thing I found helpful is a lapel/lavallier mic or a decent radio mic (Røde), which allows me to speak at a more normal, conversational, volume and still get decent audio, though keeping up the energy level to camera is important too. I write my script LARGE and make the video in short clips, or leave a pause between chunks of script (easy edit out). I also clip the script up close to the camera to help maintain eye contact. When I mess up (a lot!), I try to stop, smile, then repeat. This helps reduce my tension and frustration. 1% improvement each time is my aim. I hope this helps give you some ways of getting through, best wishes!

I like to use the BOOPS Model: Bridge - get the audience interested in why they should watch. Objective - clearly state what the video will cover or generate a hook - the value proposition. Observable - show don't tell. Personality - be authentic. Sizzle - make the video different in some way. I have no idea where this whole BOOPS comes from though....

Ahahaha, you nailed exactly what is going on in the LEGO niche. I started 2 years ago and I clearly don't have the skills to compete with everyone already in that niche. In the last 6 months I have been narrowing the niche to people interested in designing their own sets, which come with a specific set of problems and themes to cover. Already had one breakthrough video that reached 8k views so far and I'm working on a new one that will look at LEGO sets from that perspective. It's something nobody is doing and I have a lot of experience in.

Another extremely helpful video! Funny you should mention legos, I just recorded my family building a knockoff Lego fighter jet airplane, but now I’m questioning how it actually fits with my channel. My channel is about our homeschooling journey, so the Lego project definitely fits, but I feel like it’s going to become another one of my videos that has my audience scratching their head about how it fits in with the others. Plus, I don’t have anything exciting happening , it’s just sweet. I only just figured out what my page is about, so I guess maybe my next step is to see how other channels have done this because so far I’ve been thinking of my channel as content for preschoolers and their caregivers, but that’s not actually accurate. I definitely want to book a channel audit with you, but I want to do some more work on my own to get the most from it. I hope that by the time I’m ready for it, you’re not completely booked out.

Back from my research on other people who have done a channel like mine and it turns out… I can’t find one. This makes me feel like it’s a terrible idea. 😬

Okay, I’m obsessively thinking about what my channel is (will become) about and I think I’ve landed on it. I have been trying to model Christopher’s schooling after the sword in the stone. I think of him as young Arthur and me as Merlin. My goal is to create magical experiences for him that help him to learn through exploration. Ultimately, he will discover his own “sword in the stone” and become the king in a life that he carves out for himself. I want my channel to document that journey. I want each video to show one of our learning adventures.

Hi Nate I have a quick question when it comes to uploading videos. I want things to move faster so I have many highlight videos ready to upload. Will it hinder the first video performance if you upload a second video hours after? I have heard it does and honestly that kind of stinks as something that slows me down. Do you know about this ? Thank you! Love your videos. Been on and off whether to sign up for a one and one counseling but I focus on youtube gaming live stream since writing is a terrible skill for me. My thoughts get scrambled or stuck a lot. It's hard to focus.

Schedule one video per day! Then you can give KZbin the time to suggest that one video to a lot of people. Also, if you upload every few hours, it will give you too much pressure to keep uploading every few hours each day... (because you probably want your upload schedule to be consistent).

Unfortunately, there would be less attention, fewer viewers and videos would be soon forgotten by KZbin algorithm. Most viewers are inpatient, unconsciously craving dopamine, and this is precisely the most effective way to activate dopamine for them. Nate is the master of dopamine activation! He's a showman!

I'd love a video that goes more into detail about speaking to your audience. I feel like it's harder when you don't show your face/use a camera.

Great to hear. I think no-face could be very good to cover with it, like you said

Another video to learn from! Since I started up my new channel 4-5 weeks ago, I have tried to improve with every video, but I still have a lot to learn. Atm I am building a new studio, so the surroundings will be better in the videos I make now. Hope that contributes to bumping up the quality, or at least the aesthetic of them.

Helpful video, Nate. A lot to think and grow on. I've been playing RPGs (also tabletop, with friends) since I was 10, and of course I've played a lot of videogames in that genre. I'm thinking about focusing only on those, so I can understand better what my audience appreciates. The first hard thing I noticed is given by the difference in the medium. When playing with friends or online, it's very easy for me to roleplay my characters. I've always been an avid reader and I can easly fit in almost every character shoes. But with videogames it's much harder, you want to get into exploring all those options the game is giving to you, and the mechanics are often distracting. I'm wondering what is a good natural equilibrium between the two things for the viewers, without becoming "fake". And by that I mean not giving people the experience I love from these games, if that makes any sense.
