The East Ridge of Y Garn is on the quieter side of Cwm Idwal as scramblers and climbers normally gravitate to the Idwal Slabs area.
Expect good quality grade 2 scrambling on this line, especially at the top where steep drops and stunning views across Ogwen await.
Filmed on my:
GoPro 8 - amzn.to/3QGiBz0
DJI Mini 3 Pro Drone: amzn.to/3PmaB55
I recommend the book "Scrambles in Snowdonia" by Steve Ashton, it's a bible-of-sorts for hikers and scramblers: amzn.to/3QqJvej
My website: thebaldscrambler.co.uk/
Chapters:
00:00 Intro
02:06 Approach
02:37 Start
04:08 A Steep Section
05:05 Aerial Footage
05:31 Top Section
09:35 Looking Back
11:50 At The Top
A Warning: Scrambling is a dangerous sport and this line should only be tackled by those with experience at this grade or suitable training. The route I took may not be the easiest or safest and weather conditions may make this route much more difficult.

I've done this route twice and went left both times pushing up on the massive flake hold. It's kinda the best bit and considering you're nailing other harder routes , you're fine. Done Cyfrwy yet? There is a gully start to make it grade 3

I tried to avoid it by going left but that was worse lol. I did this route about 10 years ago but not since then, it's a nice line, esp near the top.

way back in time, scrambles were scrambles...imagine my surprise on returning after 30years abroad to discover a grading system ! Even more surprise to discover little bands of rocks where we used to look for problems winter and summer are now "scrambles"... All very mysterious... Nice wee video, grand day out ...

Pendantic welshman here "Y" in Welsh is pronounced as "er" in English. 'I' is pronounced "eee". "Y" is a vowel. Jist means "the"

Still one I want to do. Looks as though there are two good sections of rock and the final section is like you say all about picking what suits. How does it compare to some of the 2’s you’ve done on Tryfan (which is of course a scramblers heaven)?

Quite a bit of heather and bilberry to navigate, much more than on Tryfan, but I enjoyed the route nonetheless, esp the last upper section. It's a short walk to the start so it's not like it's a huge effort to get there, worth adding to the to-do list imo.

Awesome video, did you have any troubles flying your drone? I know the national trust don't allow the use of them in there parks. I encountered some hostile reactions flying over on the carneddau

I've never had a problem but I use the DJI Mini 3 Pro which is tiny at 249grams and is one of their quietest drones, very few people notice it once it's up. I've seen older, heavier drones being flown over the summits before and they're really noisy and disruptive but the Mini 3 produces a mellow hum rather than an annoying buzz. I try to avoid areas with lots of walkers and if I can't, I usually set off at around sunrise when few people are about - if you look closely at lake Idwal at the start of my footage, you won't see anyone walking around the lake, despite it being a very popular area ;-), I think I got there at about 6am for this one. Also, most of the routes I do are climbing or scrambling routes rather than tourist paths so there are generally fewer people around to upset and I can always launch from a discreet spot and fly in to film, if need be.

You're really ticking off the routes this summer 🙂 Too much heather bashing on this one for my taste

Plenty more routes planned, hopefully the weather will hold out. There's a few on the Carneddau I haven't done and have my eye on. Yup, the best bit from this one was the ridge at the top, this was my first with the drone so I chose a line with some easy bits so I could catch the damn thing without having to hang off the side of a cliff :-).
