Nice to have a king's and knight's move constraint at the start of the world chess championship.

I did this myself but took much longer. After finding all the 1s 2s and 3s I started colour coding the squares close to box 5 in relation to the central box. This was way more efficient but I did get a completely coloured puzzle before working out where any of the numbers actually went.

For a second I was confused why a serious chess competition would have a a kings and knights move constraint. I solved it the same way bit more chaotic but it gave me the fun of solving each square twice

17:19 - all the three's are done... but Simon's on such a high rush induced by all the numbers falling into place he misses out on a 3 in the corner. :P All okay though, with so much pleasure emanating throughout the whole video.

hah yes even when he noticed the xwing before that, you could almost tell he had no interest in 3s in any corners the edge ones being much more useful in this case!

I love the divergence of strategies one can use after placing the ones, twos, and threes. I opted to go for eights becuase they were surprisingly constrained (avoiding the need to use shading) and the rest just fell into place. As a bottom-tier amateur, this was a breath of fresh air and one of the few I was able to solve on my own.

It is pretty much a given for miracle rulesets that you get repeating patterns. I'm not sure of exactly _why_ this is, but it does occur over and over.

At around 27:27 you give up figuring out the blues, and start looking for 7s. It is possible to spot R1C3 not being able to be blue, because then it rules out all possible blue squares for row 2, and from that you can quickly get all blues done as well. Probably not faster to figure out, but i like the neatness of doing all 4s/9s before moving on. Lovely puzzle, and lovely solve!
@RichSmith77

I guess it amounts to the same thing, but I saw it as r1c3 being blue forces blue into row 3 in both boxes 2 and 3.

My understanding is that it is not possible when you have a knight and king restraint. It is how come miracle sudokus are possible with so few digits. It does mean that you can shortcut the logic a bit (and really speed up the solve) but then it'd be less fun to solve.

I loved this puzzle. I almost gave up because I thought I wasn't smart enough, as I had just been putting 1s and 3s all over the place. Then I did sneakily watch the start of Simon's solve where he quickly said that sometimes you just have to put numbers everywhere, which I gave it another go and realised I was completely on the right track to begin with. I finished it off with lots of coloring which once I had ever cell colored was a simple case of elimination.

2nd Sudoku I did in my life, once you get the hang of it it becomes quiet interesting :-). After the 1,2,3´s I proceeded in a purely graphic way. I gave all empty spaces numbers 4 to 9 and deducted 1,7,8,9 using the neighbour rule. After that was done I got a zigzag pattern of 7 pairs(tripletts) of 5,6,8 running along boxes 2,3 5,6 and 9. I knew all 3 digits were present because they all saw 2 other pairs. By coloring the "movement" i could deduct those(5,6,8) from all triple colored boxes. I kept permeating the 5,6,8 pairs and the first 8´s were revealed and a 2nd dominat pattern 4,7,9 reveled itself. I kept on drawing interference patterns until all 7´s and 8´s were placed. Leaving me with two independent pairs 5,6 and 4,9. I figured because of the independence it´s a coinflip from here so I just set the bottom right corner for 5 first and 6 after.

I took a different route -- started off the same with placing the 1s 2s and 3s, well, most of them. I got stuck and it was 20 minutes later before I found a 3 I could have placed but had missed all along. In those 20 minutes, I started colouring. Not by finding 7s or 8s, but by checking an edge piece in the centre box and using the move constraints and the "it isn't the 1 2 or 3 already placed" constraint, was able to colour a LOT of cells. After I got a bit stuck there I found the missing 3 and that unlocked a few more things. My way might have been slower but it still got the job done. Very, very satisfying puzzle.

This puzzle was reminiscent of the very first puzzle i solved from this channel some 3 (?) years ago. It was a miracle sudoku with knights and kings restraint and no domino could have consecutive digits. It had only a given 1 and 2 in it and the solve was just about as pleasant as this one, though i liked the first one more as it made you progress from 1, 2, 3, 4, 5... All in logical steps. There's just something about kings and knights move constraints together that makes me happy to solve a puzzle.

Every time I’ve done a sudoku that has a knight’s move and king’s move constraint, I’ve noticed the numbers are either horizontally or vertically slid with the number pattern. In this case they are horizontal. So once you find where a number is next to its neighbor, you can propagate it throughout if you completed its neighbors in the grid.

Took me a few tries. Once I solved the 123's, I had to color the entire rest of the puzzle since I had no idea what the digits could be. Once it was fully colored, took a few minutes to remove possibilities for the XV dominos. 7's first, then the 8's, then I was left with 49 and 56 pairs. Finally found a 56 pair touching a 49, that disambiguated the last 4 colors. 26:22 for me, but with a couple redos.

28:06 for me, but usually I can't even solve most of the puzzles featured without a decent amount of help. You wizzes will continue to baffle me, but it's nice to get one in by myself now and again.

Great solve as always! POSSIBLE SPOILER HINT if you haven’t solved this or watched yet … just an observation, nothing that tells the answer though … My first thought as soon as all the ones twos and threes were in place was, there is going to be a pattern of banding in this, and sure enough every row is exactly the same if you start with the 1 and look to the right wrapping around … it’s the exact same order. I didn’t use that to fill it in, but it was nice to see that it did end up that way since I thought it would at the beginning. Nice setting to make this rule set pop! Loved it as always!

26:18 I think I technically beat Simons time in this but this was such a gorgeous flow. I don't know how everyone else did it, but I immediately clocked that 1 pairs (that is, 4 and 9) would be constrained, so I started by highlighting all the possible 4's and 9's and eliminating/colouring until I got them all just filled in. From there it was nice and easy.

I noticed the 5,6,8 triplet hugging the given 1 and 3, and I noticed that putting the 8 north or south of the 1 would knock it out of box 5 entirely; that's what gave me a running start on the 7's and 8's. I did get held up for a while on the 5,6 and 4,9 bit, but just like you I noticed the restriction in box 6, and that cleared the rest up. ... I may have filled the grid with 5,6 and 4,9 pencil marks before realizing it, though. What can I say; I enjoy sudoku, but I am an amateur at best ^-^

Very fun, quite easy, but gave me ample opportunity for coloring. Probably not strictly necessary coloring, but it certainly made it easier, and it was fun when I got to just write in 36 digits all at once at the end!

31:52 - "And I suspect that we can go absolute HAM on the eights now." Sudoku Quote of the Year candidate right there. Also from 32:50 - 33:50, Simon places the final 38 digits in under a minute. Unbelievably satisfying.

was completely of a 1 that would have solved the puzzle for us way earlier by eliminating 4, we actually got seven and eight before coloring for four and nine, but we also used four colors because some boxes just guaranteed that whatever was in them had to go in exact spots of the puzzle, so we solved it way harder than we needed to

27:19 The blues are solvable at this point. A blue in R4C2 would put a blue in R1C3 and then in R3C5. With blues in rows 1 and 3, there is no place left for a blue in box 3. So at this point you could place a blue in box 4 in R5C3, and it will all fall in place from there, via box 5 and 6 and then to the upper three boxes.

Very neat puzzle. After sorting all 1, 2 and 3, i started coloring the grid by choosing a constrained domino and managed to do it all... :) But, I was blind and couldn't see how to choose which color was which number although that was the easiest step :)

Good thing Just Kirb didn't mention the disjoint subset constraint. It would automatically add another hour to the solve. They always miss those.

27:52 for me. Didn't expect to solve so quickly. Although I found it easier to think (after 123) in the order of 8,7 and then 49 and 56 pairs
