For anyone wondering - the camera we use for indoor videos (like this one) is the Sony A7sIII with a 16-35mm f/4 lens. I have taken that into the field as well, but it’s kinda heavy and far pricier than the ZV-E1. And less beginner friendly too.

The DJI Osmo Action 4 Outperforms GoPro in almost every way possible. The new low light sensor is a godsend. The batteries last much longer and the charging system is amazing; you can charge 3 batteries at once and it takes about 10 minutes to get one to 80%. The camera doesn't overheat or glitch out which is a notorious problem for GoPro. It can also go underwater twice as deep. The last thing I want when I am out in the wilderness is a camera that doesn't work or loses data. Last year I used to Osmo Action 3 and had it recording every moment of my backpacking adventures for 8-12 hours a day. Only time I turned it off was when I was swapping batteries. I pair the Osmo Action 4 with a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra for my backpacking adventures. Both are super compact and lightweight. They both do 4k @ 60FPS.

A little late to comment but just have to point out that the special mounting plate Miranda has on the trekking pole tripod adapter (super cool btw) is based on the Arca-Swiss standard of mounting plates, so if you have ANY Arca-Swiss compatible plate it will work with the tripod mount, HOWEVER not all Arca-Swiss plates are created equal, the Peak Designs capture clip (the backpack attachment used for the ZV-E1) will pretty much ONLY work with their own Peak Design plate because the mechanism used for the capture clip has the same size slot as an Arca-Swiss plate but doesn't only use a clamping force on the sides of the plate it uses the small holes and triangle-ish extrusions on the bottom of the plate as well. TLDR is Peak Design capture clip plate will work with ANY Arca-Swiss mount but not all Arca-Swiss compatible plates will work with the capture clip. I just realized how big the wall of text I wrote actually is, hopefully I helped give anyone curious far more details than necessary and maybe save them like idk a dollar or two on mounting hardware.
@daenathedreamy90539 ай бұрын
That's exactly what I was wondering! Thank you soooo much So basically, I I already have the Peak Design clip, I could buy any Arca mounting plate to screw onto my gorilla pod and then I'm good to go quick and easy? I have both DSLR and GoPro on my straps on a clip and could easily switch any camera to the tripod?
@ERM_photo9 ай бұрын
@@daenathedreamy9053 effectively any Arca plate yes, there are some weird like SUPER specific ones that don't like the peak clips for some weird reason but I've come across maybe like two of those in the practically hundreds of mounts I've used over the years.

As a Gopro user, I can definately recommend a couple of useful accessories to that as well - the "Gopro Hero Media Mod" gives you a better "internal" microphone, but also gives you a 3.5 mm jack so you can use wireless microphones by connecting the reciever to the Media Mod, as well as a USB-C socket for charging the battery or uploading files into the computer straight via the Media Mod instead. You can also get the "Gopro Light Mod", which is a small LED light which you attach by sliding it into a socket ontop of the Media Mod, and then you have a light when for example vlogging in low light.

I used to use a DSLR, then I was born again and started using a camcorder. It's not your soccer mom's camcorder, but what's known as a "prosumer" grade camera. They start at about $800, but because you don't have to buy multiple lenses like you have to with a DSLR/Mirrorless, it's all you pay for it besides maybe a mic which is about $50 from Rode. Compact, light, no need for opening up your camera body and exposing it to the elements while swapping out lenses, 25-600mm zoom (it's like having a telephoto, macro, wide lens all in one body) and now they come with onboard adjustments for typical stuff (ISO, aperture, etc..). Just pop it on your tripod (or gimble), open it and WALA! ...instant video. No fidgeting around, no having to trying to tailor it to the shot and the autofocus is insanely simple. It's a point & shoot on steroids (unlike DSLR/Mirrorless that require readjusting everything every time you move it). I can carry a whole kit in one small pod (about 8X3") and that'll hold 3 batteries (for a good 5 hours of constant shooting) and OH! they don't overheat or break up the footage in clips every 30 minutes! You can literally just put the camera on and let it record for hours without worrying about it having a meltdown. DSLR/Mirrorless cameras are photography cameras that shoot videos, but camcorders are legitimate videography cameras. All the hunters are switching back to camcorders now after losing so much footage with their DSLRs & mirrorless cameras. The footage is nice too. I suck at taking my time and getting nice shots, but the one time I did it (the moon video on my channel), I was stunned at the footage. It was like NASA took the shot. I could clearly see all the craters on the moon. I have a GoPro too, but GoPro is like Adobe Premier Pro. It's overpriced and unreliable. When it works, it's AWESOME, but when it doesn't, it's horrible and frustrating. It's too finicky and I can't stand taking good footage and HOPING that my GoPro actually caught it.

I think I can help alleviate some annoyance at 12:18! I used to use an arca swiss screw mount to allow me to use the peak designs clip and a tripod, but twisting the knob to attach it to the tripod was always annoying and I never knew if I tightened it enough. After some digging, I found that the F38 system has a super solid quick release that also has a plate that works with peak designs in one direction and the F38 system in the other. Much faster, much more secure. Maybe it will be a nice upgrade for your setup.

I use a GoPro Hero 9 with a custom 3D-printed handle when my friend and I go on adventures, and for all the issues, it gets the job done. My friend LOVES doing water shots and having the camera already water-resistant is a HUGE plus, not to mention almost anyone can use it with minimal to no training. And you can pick them up second-hand pretty cheap if you are on a tight budget.

Awesome tips! I'd recommend ditching the camera cage and handle though (I would ditch the strap too)! Useless weight that won't make your videos look better, cheers!
@RainerGolden10 ай бұрын
Totally agree they add weight, but I find it worth it to have the handle and cage. We film outside all the time and the cage helps protect the camera from drops, as does the strap since I regularly have to use my hands for things, and often suddenly. On a recent trip I misjudged a step off of a rock and had to suddenly shoot out my hands to stop myself from falling flat on my face from a decent height. Because of the strap, the camera just swung from my neck and was undamaged when I let go of it. Without the strap it falls 6 feet and hits a rock. Another benefit is that the strap helps me go without a gimbal for some stabilization. Miranda and I are new to being videographers, relatively, and so our muscles have not developed that experienced camera-person smoothness. To help with that when we're filming we just stretch the strap against our necks to make it taught, and use our entire body as a counter weight for smoother and easier pans, tilts and dollies. Not perfect, but does help. Also, the mounting options for things like onboard mics, HDMI clamps, and so on, is great with the cage seeing as the ZV-E1 lacks a good deal places where mounts can be attached to the camera body itself. My hands also get quite sweaty and warm and so by having my hands off the camera on the handle, especially when hiking, I can keep it from collecting sweat and overheating and roll it for long periods. So for me it's weight that's worth it for far easier handling of the camera, even though in terms of picture quality they don't add anything. Definitely agree with you that in an ideal world we don't use a cage or strap or handle and save the weight. Miranda will often take that handle off when she films solo.
@RainerGolden10 ай бұрын
Miranda has also just told me she doesn't want the cage on there either, haha! So hey... definitely a personal preference thing!
