I'm one of the people! It's funny some things you don't question because it's how you've always known it - until you know better! (For example pretending to smoke with my candy cigarettes seemed cool when I was a kid in the late 70s... now it blows my mind to think about!) All my lanyards will now have this clasp for sure - and not just because they are actually easier to sew 😉

Yes, I'm was one of them. I'm learning and made collars before for my little doggies with the side release buckles; now, I feel they will be safer with this breakaway buckles. Thanks for sharing, I'm learning a lot watching your tutorials.

Really glad you posted this. I am making lanyards for all of the nurses at work as a late nurses’s week gift. I was concerned about the safety issue as well. I had looked for the clasps already . Thanks to your video and link provided was able to locate what I needed.

Thank you very much for sharing your tips on making lanyards! I made 30 for our charity golf tournament volunteers, using golf ball printed cotton fabric. I did not use the fusible fleece and was still very pleased with the results... and the compliments!

I like the pieced version for myself, but as gifts I would also do single fabric.

for me it would also depend on whether I had the quick release clasps and how quickly I wanted the lanyards. Happy sewing!

You could also easily retrofit the lanyards which didn’t have a safety release.

Very informative, but can you tell me if there’s a certain type of needle to use on the sewing machine and what should the tension be set at?

I used a basic universal needle (90/14) and because every machine is different (and mine does tension automatically) I'm not sure what to tell you on that. Test with scrap fabric to figure out what's best on your machine.

Love these! I found the other video first and had never actually seen a lanyard without a quick release clasp. I am actually thinking I can use the quick release clasps from some lanyards that have worn out fabric. So fun! thanks. BTW - I love using a clapper also but I had a wood worker friend make me some from hardwood. My favorite is the square on he made for using on quilt blocks.

Recycle your clasps - love it! I was just at a trade show eyeing some square clappers for quilt blocks - how lucky to have a friend who can make them for you 🥰

What stitch do you use to sew on the safety clip to the lanyard?

I put the fabric through the clip and folded it over about an inch. Then I did a simple straight stitch back and forth, making sure my presser foot wasn't on the clip at all. Hope that helps!

Hi.. thx for the lesson.. I am confused about the way the lanyard is suppose to lay.. I made one but they don’t lay flat across chest. What am I doing wrong?

hmmm... I'm not sure. Are you sewing close to the lobster clasp that would hold an id, keys, etc? That should make things lay flat.

The issue with a lanyard without a breakaway clasp is if someone grabs you by the lanyard it would be hard to get away. Especially important in hospitals based on comments and required by law in the UK (maybe elsewhere, but I had a few comments from the UK) Lots of people wear them without the clasp so you just need to decide which you prefer.
