In celebration of the release of the Ghost of Tsushima
So you come across the Yakuza - Japan’s organized crime syndicates. They offer structure, a surrogate family to be a part of, and provides you with a way to climb up the ranks of society. Being a Yakuza means that the same society that looked down upon you, would now have to bow down to you in fear and submission.
Today’s Yakuza have grown to be much more sophisticated. Instead of just gangsters, the smart ones are now economic gangsters, or Keizai Yakuza. Instead of just your typical rackets like extortion, gambling, drug dealing which still very much happens - they’ve catapulted themselves into the world of high finance, legitimate businesses, the stock market, real estate investments, multinational corporations. You’re gonna have to understand the economics of the Yakuza.
The Yamaguchi-gumi is structured kinda like the American Mafia. One of the main differences between the Yakuza and other crime organizations like the Mafia is the oyabun-kobun relationship, which literally translates to “father role-child role”. The Godfather is part of the upper management that makes all the syndicate’s big. Then there’s the grunts of the syndicate that do all the dirty work and runs all the gang’s different money making operations.
The Yamaguchi-gumi was bringing in well over $460 million dollars annually, or over $1.3 billion dollars in today’s money. Yakuza are integrated into society, they’re very open about their numbers to researchers and the press - making the Yakuza, one of the most well-researched syndicates out there. And Godfathers will make around $400/yr, or around $1m/yr in today’s money.
The Yakuza also have some unwritten rules that must be followed, or else you’ll face some dire consequences: Never reveal secrets of Yakuza, No withholding money from family, Always be obedient to superiors, Don’t appeal to police or the law.
As Japan ended Feudalism with democracy and industry, these Yakuza gangs adjusted to the modernizing economy. The old Yakuza are fading out and the new generation are much more violent, care less about chivalry, honor, traditions, and only really care about money.

Most illegal orgs are now more corporate really. They used the laundered money to build, invest, own companies, stocks, etc and they are big enough to the point that the money is really hard to differentiate btwn illegal and legal earnings. It also doesn't help that execs of yakuza, mob, etc are usually on the good books with politicians so rooting out is going to be really tough without insane political will that won't appear due to their sheer influence in both the light and dark sides of their respective economies

I remember reading about a bunch of Yakuza talking about Yakuza 3. Their complaint? Kiryu fights too much and his signature red shirt look mega cheap and doesnt fit his title. Also not using cigarette as a power-up. That it. A normal game mechanic to not make it a netflix series, a character design and a lack of a single easy powerup. Apperently, the rest was top notch. Now THAT a badge of honor.

Recently, I'd heard that the Yakuza were crippled by a shift in politics. It's great on paper that organized crime was largely stamped out, but allegedly the only thing it accomplished was suppressing to Yakuza-style structure, and did nothing to ease the crimes, which are harder to track now. If anyone knows where to get reliable numbers on this, I'd be very grateful to see it. I'm also curious to know what is becoming of the social outcast, who no doubt still have no place in society. I watched to the end. Thanks.

I have some counterarguments here. Meth, or any drug for that matter, is bought and sold between consenting parties. Is it bad for you and potentially dangerously addictive? Sure. The fact remains though that people happily and _consensually_ trade for it. People are ultimately responsible for what they do with their own bodies, and contrary to popular belief, not all people who smoke meth become junkies, just like not everyone who drinks alcohol become alcoholics. Like anything in life, its a matter of moderation, and ultimately people need to assume personal responsibility for their actions. Sex trafficking on the other hand is harder to justify. That being said, there's a fine line between sex trafficking and sex work, the former being non-consensual and exploitative. Prostitution is technically illegal but largely tolerated in Japan, so any form of prostitution may fall under the umbrella of sex trafficking within the country, consensual or not. If the Yakuza are forcing people into sex work against their will, that's clearly unjustifiable. If they're setting up brothels where consenting parties can exchange sex for money in relative safety, I see no issue. I imagine the truth is a mixture of both.

@@Dave_of_Mordor Well, it depends. I'm a developer, for example. I'm pretty good, but that's about it. Not super special or anything, we have a few better software engineers. That being said, because I care, I talk to people and because I'm arguing reasonable in meetings, not holding back, several people from upper management and some C*Os have taken a liking in me and an interest in my opinion. They ask me about my ideas on how to improve stuff and I got two job offers directly from them. One of which I'm going to take. It's not that much up on the management path, but it's connected to a better income and a nice chance to prove myself and start moving up. So yeah, I basically think the two steps pretty much apply: Step 1 gives you the opportunity to go for step 2.

I'd advise against the Yakuza. Low level guys get treated like trash. It's highly likely that you'd be made to confess to a crime committed by a higher up, and serve out their prison sentence while they remain free.

You got several facts wrong or misunderstood. First of all it’s wakagashira and not wakashira. The pinky cutting isn’t really a punishment, it’s more of a price to pay of leaving the yakuza. And if you were gonna mention the Yamaguchi Gumi, you might as well mention that they split up and three “yamaguchi” factions have different HQs and are at war. I was born in Kobe and my uncle was a Yakuza cop. But this video is still great piece especially coming from a westerner/non-Japanese. If you want really up to date and correct information their are plenty of Japanese YT channels dedicated to it.

The better parallel to gangs is _the military_ , not father-son or corporations. No father son relationship would be as loyal and disciplined as Yakuza demand of their underlings. The boss is akin to the President or General of the Army, under him are Generals, Liutenants, and so on. Each with strict loyalty, identity, and obedience to the army. The bastards label themselves using family jargon to lull people into believing it’s “cultural” and has moral values connected to every human being.

Really great video - I’m someone with a deep interest in organised crime and the Yakuza and it’s so good to see you’ve really got your facts together. Have a look at the Russian Mafia, they’re fascinating. Their numbers are small but their influence immeasurable. They came from the gulags in Soviet Russia and as the USSR was falling apart they would buy weapons off corrupt generals to sell on the black market. By weapons I don’t just mean AK47s - I mean submarines, tanks and even nuclear missiles. Nowadays they’re deeply in league with the Russian government and even Trump. Not to mention they’re causing the housing prices to shoot up in the UK. The biggest syndicate is (here we go): The Solntskevskaya-Bratva
