In partnership with The Fur-Bearers, we are pleased to present Part Two of the Trapped in the Past documentary series! Trapped in the Past Part Two: The Economics of Trapping - Past and Present explores Canada's history with the trapping industry, its place in today's society, and the economic, environmental, and cultural sustainability of trapping. After this episode, you will be able to answer the question: does commercial trapping have a place in today’s society?
Trapped in the Past exposes Canada's cruel, archaic, unethical and unnecessary commercial trapping industry with current science, hard-hitting research and dynamic interviews with some of the world's leading experts on trapping, including trappers and wildlife biologists such as Gilbert Proulx and Carter Niemeyer. Our goal with the Trapped In the Past series is to equip you with the information you need to speak out on behalf of Canada's fur-bearers like wolves, beavers, lynx and foxes to enable a comprehensive trapping reform that includes a ban on snares across the country.
Please help us get the word out by sharing this, commenting below, and liking it (even if you DON'T like what you learn in the video!).

@@bradleycoles8273thanks for your perspective, we’re not expecting to change many trappers minds, as most of you have lived with a false narrative surrounding trapping your whole lives. Our plan is instead to educate the people that simply don’t know this is going on in our forests.

Although shocking, it's another great production with some really interesting statistical based information, it's not hard to see why this needs to be stopped! The vast majority of pelts are sent overseas, it would be interesting to find out which countries these appeal to most. Really sad times but understand that the indigenous people still do this for their way of life, which is fair to a degree as long as it's not on a commercial basis, I would imagine it wouldn't have any great impact on numbers overall, unlike the larger trapping communities. Thank you for watching the episode and for sharing! The Agreement on International Humane Trapping Standards (AIHTS) is an agreement between the European Community, Canada, and Russia to facilitate fur-trade between these parties. Beyond this, Canadian-sourced fur is sold globally, mainly to China, Greece, Italy, Russia, and South Korea. However, China and Russia are the two largest buyers of fur. With the demand for fur fashion declining across the globe, there is only one remaining fur auction house in North America, the Fur Harvesters Auction. You can learn more about this in our free educational database on trapping here: www.exposedwildlifeconservancy.org/knowledge-base/trapping.

an amazing piece of work. The research and time spent in this project must have been enormous. So nice to see Kim, please say hi for me. Special praise to whoever does your trailers and puts all this together. Goose bumps as the intro started and at the end. The animals don't care who is causing their suffering. They only know that they are and they want it to end. Before Europeans invaded and brought with them their horrific steel traps, indigenous people were using deadfalls to kill fur-bearers. I have to question what is truly "traditional." When I was I kid, Grey Owl was one of my heroes. I now know that title belongs to his Mohawk wife Anahereo who witnessed the suffering of animals in traps and convinced her husband to transition from being a trapper to conservationist.

Thomas, there’s a lot of interesting science showing that trapping and hunting actually increases livestock conflict. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t deal with conflict when it happens, but there are other more effective measures to prevent depredation than trapping.

Predator control not even mentioned. How do you keep wolf and coyote numbers in check ?
@thatguyComstock

Mother nature has been doing that since the beginning of time. Desire a more modern example? Okay, national parks- where there is no trapping- have no disjointed ratios of predators.

It's called "self-control". Something trappers exhibit none of; they simply cannot control themselves.

@pennyontrack , they’ve never had their deer heards dwindle to nothing, (not that that would know it to see it), they’ve never had to tell their kids, that their family dog got torn apart in the front yard by a coyote, they’ve never walked a wintering moose range in the spring, to see a boneyard of destruction by wolves. They’ve never seen, a cow and calf moose, forced onto and through the thin ice by wolves, struggling to keep afloat, the only thing keeping them breathing is their chins clinching onto the ice, which finally breaks away, so they struggle again, until they slowly drown away. These are voices of very uneducated people, in the real world of trapping. They have zero sense when it comes to predator management, trapping, or why we do it. The only people this video is fooling, are the uneducated, a degree in school, means nothing on a trapline. There are far more biologists around here that support predator management, then what are in this video, it’s easy to cherry pick one with a soft heart, to spew on something they know nothing about, except what they read in books, you know what they say about book smart… There is plenty of study’s done supporting predator management. We’ve had a wolf cull running 3 years now, finally, our moose and deer are making a little bit of a come back. As I commented on the last poorly done video, you’re going to have to do better than this.

@@debbiewall2160because they don’t have any graphic content to share, if they did, we both know it would spark a lot more attention to these videos and give them an actual leg to stand on, it would spark the attention of responsible trappers as well. What statistics are you referring to? There are no legit statistics mentioned in these videos. Facts yes, about down fur markets and clothing company’s not using fur garnets, those are facts only and hold no candle to the overall trapping industry. Animals being the number 1 priority, show us the statistics proving a decline in populations due to trapping?
