I ordered an Ed Fong GMRS Antenna, and it works GREAT -- I use 50ft of KMR400 Coax Cable, using a BTECH GMRS-50 Radio with the Antenna about 45 feet above ground.... Radio puts out 53 watts with an SWR of 1.2..... also have the Jpole GMRS Antenna which is in 2nd place... both are very good Antennas.

Nice video. I'm up in Seminole County and JUST got into GMRS. Only have cheapy Baofeng handhelds with ABBREE 771 antennas. Can reach simplex 2-3 miles depending on direction. Was thinking of also getting cheapy base/mobile GMRS radio and was wondering what to use for the house. My handhelds cant trip the Orlando 650 or the LoneWolf Apoka repeaters even though according to mygmrs the reapeter should solidly reach here. I just get reach them. I don't even see a an Orlando 700 on the map. But great video!

Greetings! Very new with GMRS, currently a couple of Tidradio HHs for my son who lives 3.8 miles from my house and myself to see if we can work up some comms simplex. The oem antennas get out about 1.5 miles where we are, fairly concentrated residential not far from I-40 west of Oklahoma City so lots of emanations between our locations. He is on the third floor of his apt complex so he can't really hang anything external out of his windows but his windows face somewhat nw of my location straight north and there is some open ground between us before the land slopes up a bit. Sorry for the word count, lol, your channel is bringing up some great memories, I grew up down there, a bit west of you, Sarasota, but I used to spend all my spare time south of you on Kissimmee Lakes and locks all about, wow, miss all that! My question, finally, is about the Ed Fong...I know it needs to be vertical but do you think if we built one and kept it vertical or mostly vertical up against his windows inside it would do a serviceable job of receiving from my house coaxed to the HH, where I intend to have either an Ed Fong on a 30 foot pole, hopefully with a mobile radio soon, but first I am putting two of the Abbrea 42 inch skyscrapers on our radios, lol, can't help but laugh when I see those things unfurled. I am realistic about the terrain between us, some trees and my house is about 40 feet taller than his ground floor altitude but from his stairs the horizon is only about a mile north. Anyway, best of luck I will await notifications, go down there and catch a couple of slaunches at Kissimmee, please! :)

If not the Ed Fong I would get the N9TAX Slim Jim antenna . I will answer more of your questions tomorrow. That Antenna is easy to hang and works very well.

To follow up I would try the Ed Fong or the Dual band 2M / 70CM Slim Jim Antenna from N9tax labs. If you leave it inside it will hurt the reception and transmission no doubt.

by now I take it you have your Ed Fong antennas up and running, I have the Wouxun 905g with a nagoya 771 antenna on it and can hit the repeater that is north of the capital in OKC. from Blanchard, OK.

@@Okiescrapper Yes. The Ed Fong Antenna is outstanding.

Were you hitting those distances via bouncing off repeaters or directly on 2 way channels from radio to radio? Great vid thanks in advance.

you talk about receive signal strength. did you test to see how far out from the base that you could get in solid with a handitalkie?

I could talk from Disney to my base with my handheld. 5 watt handheld radio to a 50 base unit

Great review. Straight to the point. Maps and measurements, that’s what counts.

What is the danger of lightning strikees on the ed fong?

Mine is grounded because I ground all of my Antennas. I don't know if it's required however.

I got one of those antennas but I can’t use it because no stores near me sell the pvc pipe that’s needed.

Ed will ship you one

You can hear our traffic on Zello. You can't talk directly to the GMRS radio traffic but we Monitor the Zello app and back via Zello or the Radio. Central Florida GMRS

Iff it went a lil farther n I could reach it. I'm going to put something up here at the house. I use the 700, but want more simplex distance.

The PVC pipe is for weather proofing. If you weather seal it another way you don't need it.

Tape it to some wood if ya wanna try it out, remember if u use thin coax like rg58 ur loosin a heap of ya transmit power and it will lower the receive aswell so use thick coax like lrm400 or bigger if ya can and the shorter the coax the better
