8:12 Were teleprompters ever used on set? I always heard they were used on soaps. These clips show actors appear to be limited to just printed scripts.

We had teleprompters for the first few years I was on, but I will tell you - it was HARD to use them without looking like you were staring into the camera reading them. And they were never where you wanted them to be. You had to look around. So they ended up cutting them towards the end of the run. We could put notes around the set though. Usually during phone calls... Also that scene with Chief Mallory when he had the script was a run through before shooting an "insert". That means it wasn't a real taping of the whole show. They were shooting a scene, perhaps after regular taping. Many times we did this when someone was going on vacation but they were needed in some shows.

We did it so rarely that it became funny as you can see. There were days when someone would just lose it and go up like 3 or 4 times in one scene (Joel does it in this tape - 3 times in a row) and then it got tense on the set. You can also see how actors DID go on if they could, but the booth would say cut. That's what we were supposed to do. Try to save it.
