It's funny how the less "shred" type guitarists tend to be the most influential and are associated with some of the greatest songs ever written. David Gilmour and The Edge are some of our best examples of that phenomenon.

For sure. I think virtuosity isn't limited to technical chops. The Edge is a virtuoso in terms of creating a compelling collage of sounds and having a style that a listener can immediately identify as him.

Great video guys! I did a performance with The Edge a long time ago when I played with Carrie Underwood. I had his full stereo rig in all of its glory in my in-ear monitors. The tones and the playing were just unbelievable!! He's truly one of the best of the best. Unmistakable tone and musicality.

I’m glad The Edge gets some recognition. It seems like because he plays a lot with effects to build his sound, he considered as a less talented guitarist. I personally believe there’s room for everyone. Sometimes, just a guitar straight in an amp is what we need; and sometimes effects will provide what we need to get inspired and build a part with them. It’s not easier or more difficult, it’s just different tones and styles. I’m glad you could have the chance to play to play with The Edge... but I also have no doubt he was probably also pleased to get your rig in his in-ear because you’re also a very talented guitarist Shawn.
@seansrecords5 жыл бұрын
Phil Smith I think that's true but only by guitar player . Most people consider the edge one of the best guitar players of all time . I think guitar players will as well again in time . Sometimes people get so big they only recognition they get is negative

Sean Dyer I noticed this kind of elitist reaction by guitar players is often with guitarist that do play in pop (popular) music bands. Just like great guitarists should only play very esoteric music, probably thinking that playing “pop” must be easy, so no need to be a “great” guitarist to do so... When it’s actually not easy at all to play music that will please the majority of listeners and become “popular”. My 2¢
@seansrecords5 жыл бұрын
Phil Smith no your completely right. If making popular music were easy we'd all be topping the charts ;-) I understand not wanting to play like someone but not acknowledging talent is usually due to insecurity or ingnorance. Long live Edge anyway !

This is a "recent" phenomenon. For the longest time, every guitar player I was aware of appreciated the Edge, even my hardcore metal buddies understood and admired his contributions. It's maybe because there's such an oversaturation of talent now that stands on the shoulders of pioneers, and a lot of members of a certain generation can't put that in context. Yes, OK Boomer me all you want :)

Edge has a lot to teach. The looseness in his right hand and his rhythmic feel are so on point: relaxed, thoughtful, engaged. And his solos are always instantly singable, like Gilmour. The solos on “New Years Day” and “Sunday Bloody Sunday” remain classics of “sonic architecture”

@nikolaki5 жыл бұрын
Great discussion that reminded me of my childhood and the guitarists that got me playing (Jimi, Gilmour, Blackmore and more). One fun thing to do, that highlights the 'adapt your playing to the effect mentality', is to get one of those zoom pedals (g2, g3 etc) and just play through each of the factory loaded patches. Some of them are too wacky and out there but give each one some time and really try to mold yourself to the patch. One can have some really transcendental moments especially with the delay heavy ones!
