Edger inline with off table. Today, Jade slides the flitch all the way and throws it in a pile. Instead of walking 15 feet, she puts the flitch on the edger and still walks to the end, removes from edger, throw it in the appropriate pile, walks back to get next board off mill
@scottsoper7 ай бұрын
@@smisky1086no matter where you put the edger, there is no time for Jade to use it and still keep up. so the flitches have to wait in the infeed of the edger with the edger at an angle off the end so it can go along side the building. You need a infeed deck raised up so you don’t have to lift each piece as you feed it into the edger , we had rails with small rollers on the lumber pilling end of the mill , you placed a piece of u-channel on the roller rails , and piled the lumber on top of the u-channel , when the pile was complete , you rolled the lift of lumber away , giving yourself space to pile another lift . Eventually the forklift arrived to remove the completed lift of lumber . We also used the same system to feed the planer mill . 👍🇨🇦

@Gronicle17 ай бұрын
Surely you can replace the beam that Jade busted or "sister" it up with another to support the overhead. With the new 70 on line working at an increased rate crew limitations you have an optimization problem. If you need to run the 70 at max caplacity with crew of two, then you need to calculate trade off benifit of standing down early in day to run the edger with the same two crew (Jade and Em). This is a labor resource constraint problem that you need to solve for maximum profitablility of product. Bigger businesses deal with this all the time and good number crunchers in operations could help you...if you had someone to help. Talk to people you know and trust and see if they can work it for you. The dance routines are nice and I am impressed with what you can do in work boots!

Us old timers measured the square footage and shape that each machine in the yard takes up, as well as the total area and topography that the yard has. Then scale down everything to the size of a game board and cut the outline of the machines out of different colour paper. Also, find a roll of paper and do the same thing with the yard. Now you can easily move the "paper machines" anywhere in the yard as many times as you like until you settle upon the perfect arrangement without having to repeatedly move the machines themselves.

We ran a heavy roller off the back of the table to a conveyer that would take it to the trim saws, The table had two rollers built in and we made a third to ride on top. It had two pivoting arms attached to the table. We then attached them together with square steel and had a chain attached to that going to a pully in the ceiling that the edger operator could lift. we also had a bracket with a hole welded to the front of the egder were he could put a pin in place to keep the arms with the roller up if we need to. Don't know if that will be any help to you, but good luck.

Turn the edger 90° and put it at the end of the mill deck. That way Jade can remove the scales of the first cuts, run the following flitches through the edger (at a fixed width) and then , as normal, just take the finished boards of the saw deck. That would mean three pallets down by the deck. One for scales, one for sawn lumber and one for edged lumber. Guess the one for scales would have to be in the middle so Jade can put the offcuts from the edger on that pallet too.
@scottsoper7 ай бұрын
Jade won't have time to deal with the edger; the new mill is too fast.
@Rio-Jeos5 ай бұрын
A simple solution is a belt drive conveyor placed between the equipment with a feeder on the output to send lumber into the edger. its done at most factories to automate some steps in production. buy a used one to begin with to save money.
@peterlennart90627 ай бұрын
If you can arrange the edger alongside the mill so that the boards can make a "U-turn" or side move if they require edging you will save much space and get a nice work flow. Boards not needing edging can go straight to the pile off the mill. The only thing to solve is to get some sort of saw dust removal to avoid having to work between the machines. Having them alongside each other is also beneficial if you later on want to build a roof over the machines for better weather protection. If you cannot have the machines alongside each other, try to think of an right-angle turn instead, but this requires more "floor"-space. The aim should be to have both an efficient work flow and avoid as much manual handling (lifting, twisating etc,) as possible Using ball rollers in turns are very efficient.
@scottsoper7 ай бұрын
Your missing the point. The new mill takes 100% of Emerald and Jade's time. This edger can not be used at the same time as the mill without a third person.
@peterlennart90627 ай бұрын
@@scottsoper Thanks for pointing that out. I had to see the video once again and yes, to be able to get a good flow from log to board there is a need for a third person at the outfeed end of the edger. I got focused at getting a good flow from mill to edger and missed the edger outfeed aspect. Sorry for that.

👍👍👏👏 double length roller table between/ parallel the two units, upon full exit from first machine pull lead edge forward enough to get about 45° angle towards roller table with the lead edge, pull to center point, then straighten out, push to opposite end, repeat transfer to second machine.
@sanderd177 ай бұрын
Can you put the edger next to the mill (parallel) but in the opposite direction? Then Jade can put the boards on the edger and they come straight back to Emrald for stacking. Distributing the extra work. Not sure if that works out space-wise. You probably also need some room to stand between the mill and the edger.

I’m with other folks advising moving the edger closer to the mill, or vise versa. Yes, you said the mill is bolted to a concrete pad but if there is a more efficient way to do things it may have to be moved. Think of it like a kitchen, where you have have 3 major places to get to: food storage/fridge, food prep/counter space + oven and cleanup/sink. A work triangle is most efficient where nothing is more than a step or two away. Working with 12’ boards expands that triangle and distances that have to be covered, but same idea. If you have to have the mill & saw 90° to each other, then maybe add a roller table or two and get an electric scooter or Segway so Jade can zip back and forth. Or a couple so Em can buzz down to help load the edger. Or like other folks suggest, incorporate edging each day instead of just Fridays. So, 6:24 sawing and 1:36 edging. Assuming y’all work an 8 hour day. Good luck! 👍

Put the Edger to the road side of the new Mill (Parallel to the Mill). As the wood comes off the Mill, Jade slides it directly across and feeds into the Edger. After feeding into the edger the edged boards and trims can then be stacked at 90* to the edger's outfeed facing the highway with the end of the boards near the center of the cant being sawn. Jade stacks cross ties/slabs at end of the mill and lumber (at 90*... or a "fanned station" for each of 3 products) and also feeds the edger in reverse to Emerald who stacks the trimmed/edged lumber.

yes, machines are just to big to have the same person operate them on both ends at same time. so one might think "set them side by side, feeding end of second aside the output end of the first one". this could be an option but here you need to have in mind the pieces not going into second process. can you put them away easily, sometimes you need a machine for the bigger ones. also, to consider is, can the mill operator take the boards and cut offs from the edger while operating the mill, and are the boards off the edger in the right place then. all in all it will slow down milling and thus not use the full capacity of the new mill. other then this, think on energy ore fuel consumption of the machines in side by side use when both run idle for times, as each will have to wait for the operator is working on the other machine.

I have no opinion on how to set it up. I remember my years as a machine operator for a sawmill here in Forest county(northwestern PA). We'd average 800 to 1000 logs a day. I was privileged to learn and operate every machine except the headsaw. I refused. I used to run for 8 and 10 hr shifts in my 20's and 30's. It was the time of my life. I give my word that you both can easily operate your mill and edger simultaneously. I believe it. Crazy possibility- smaller outfeed roll case to allow edgings to fall freely to the side. God bless and keep up the informative and entertaining content.

Emerald, If line the input to the Mill output you feed the edger live. That way the finished boards could then be ran directly to the edger The problem will still evolve a lot of walking. You could hire a part time person to handle the edging on a daily bases. GoodLuck

Set up the edger parallel to the 70 on the road side, operating from Jade to Emerald. Jade takes flitches off of the 70 and feeds them into the edger; Emerald offbears, stacking the lumber and offcuts. Drop the offcuts off of both sides of the edger to minimize movement. Seems to me to be the only way to run both simultaneously with two people.

Move things around and put them end to end leaving a little room in case you fall behind some. as the boards come out of mill they travel right to edger or if they are good they can be pulled out of the line and stacked! One straight line! You two look awfully great to be working in a mill today woman! AND LOVE THE DANCING!

Edger goes next to the mill on the side where the mill load deck is not, with the edger load end on the unload side of the mill. The 4 cants go into a cant pile on the load side of the mill. Boards that go through the edger go into a pile on the opposite side in a staging area by the edger. Cut lumber comes off the end of the mill. There should be enough time to run the 4 boards through the edger while the lumber is being cut. Emerald is going to have to deal with the flitches and boards coming off of the edger or you need another hand.

Another employee is not a good idea; family only. They have to run the mill and then the edger. However the edger needs to be placed so the the flitches coming off get stacked right by the infeed of the edger.

As the lumber comes off the mill you need a Y shaped bed. One side fro filtches the other for perfect boards. While you are generating filtches Jade can be running them through the edger. If she can't quite keep up the finished boards will stack randomly on the other leg of the Y. It won't take Jade long to finish the edging then she can stack the finished boards.

no time for all that. The new mill is way to fast to be messing with the edger at the same time.

Side by Side in opposite directions will work, how I used to do it fabricating custom trim. Board goes thru sawmill or table, goes the other way for planer & shaper.
@scottsoper7 ай бұрын
not going to work in this case because the mill takes 120% effort or more: no time for the edger.

we ran 3 people in our mill in the early 80's. one of the things you DONT have, is a conveyor, and a deposit table, where the stacker can recieve more than one board at a time, allowing the edger operator to run non stop for an extended period of time. if the stacker gets overwhelmed, operator can move to the back and help stacker. 2 people would get overwhelmed, (imo) to mill AND edge together. but edging to a reciever table, allows faster edging by using the operators help in stacking when the stacker falls behind.

Put the edger right next to the rollers and have it a bit lower if you can. Slabs go straight out and have a hook to pull the board to be edged down to edger rollers then straight to pallet.
