I've watched every Sewing Weekender video (and I'll be rewatching my very favourites, Alison Smith and Jenn Hogg again!). I didn't think all would be of interested to me, but surprise! They were all entertaining, educational and inspirational. Thanks, Fold Line, for facilitating this virtual sewing retreat! It was fantastic.

I love that Folkwear kaftan! I almost always love their patterns, but that one in particular - it looks like just the thing to make in case we have a heatwave this summer!

The boatneck dress is really beautiful. Channeling a bit of Audrey Hepburn! As always love the animated (magic) hands. Perhaps you were thinking of me as I sipped my coffee(shop) while watching! XOX

I’ve sewn for about 64 years, and take pride in the garments I’ve sewn. But when I can get a linen shirt for less than $10 from Costco which is less than the cost of the fabric, and less than the cost of the fabric, and less than the cost of the buttons , thread, and interfacing, it is kind of a no brained. That doesn’t even count the time spent.

But I sew because it's a soulful activity that nourishes me and connects me with past generations and other sewers.I sew because my garments are like ones you'd pay $300 or more for, not $10 at Costco. I pay more than I should for many textiles because they are produced sustainably and sold by people earning living (rather than slave) wages. I sew using (really cheap) fabric from a nonprofit that keeps fabric out of the landfill (hello, Our Social Fabric in Vancouver!). I sew sturdy, long-lasting, beautiful clothes for family so they can wear my love.

I agree with you, but $10 for travel pants that have zippered pockets and are quick drying to just too much of a temptation to pass up. Same for a twill skirt with attached shorts for $6

Reply #2. Also, thanks for the fabric store resource. I’ve put OSF on my calendar to visit soon!

BTW, I tried to purchase tickets at 8:30 pm just now (Sunday) but the link just says sales ended or event ended. We've been out camping with no signal or I wouldn't have left it quite so last minute! Hope to catch it next year. ❤

Think about the slave labour aspect of the $10 shirt!
