The Philip Broberg experiment in Edmonton seems to be coming to an end... What are YOUR thoughts on Broberg? Is he a BUST? And will we see a TRADE? I'd LOVE to hear YOUR thoughts! #GravGang #RoadTo75kSUBS
@nolankuffner357310 ай бұрын
It's tough to call a player a bust when they sort of give him time when the entire team is crapping the bed. But when they start playing better, it's a short leash and nothing but bench riding. He was never going to be an offensive dynamo, and his +- is actually pretty good, considering how Edmonton's run and gun style ends up burning out D men and goalies. Like, they're the kings of the powerplay.. and giving up odd man rushes, meaning they need to score 3-5 goals to win, while teams with better defense (like Boston, Colorado, the Rangers, and VERY RECENTLY Minnesota) only really need 2-3. It's a double edged sword and not a system that a guy like Broberg is going to learn in practice. Because Edmonton is so young, their game is very reactionary and their communication issues don't help. Of the Canadian teams, the Oilers are the most talented offensively but probably 6-7th for defensive prowess. Skinner has managed to adapt, but until Edmonton plays a smarter, more balanced game, they're still going to have terrible skids and blowout losses. And teams like Vegas, Colorado, and Vancouver are basically always going to cause them fits.

Video aged like milk. Both Holloway and Broberg are looking like studs in this playoff run. Graviteh should do some research before making videos. The Oilers have been slow developing D-men for many years now and its paying off huge. Bouchard has turned into a generational D-man. Vinny D went from 7th overall pick to someone who can play Top4 Minutes in the League with highly sought after physicality. Broberg was sent down to the AHL where he proved he was the best defenceman in the AHL.

The reason he was drafted so high was because apparently Holland was targeting Seider for Edmonton, but when Yzerman grabbed Seider..Holland panicked and grabbed who he thought was the next best defenseman.

Broberg went so high because he had two good tournaments in Hlinka and U18s in his draft year. he should have been a late 1st round pick. but Edmonton has done this consistently in the Mcdavid era, they draft on needs.. "oh this Puljujarvi guy can play with mcdavid".. "oh this Broberg guy can play on the PP with mcdavid".. i dont think Broberg has the processing mind to stick around in the NHL.

Holloway is waaayy worse for me. He's constantly buzzing on the ice and he looks so good, but for some reason there are things that just aren't working yet and it hasn't turned to production. That is 1000% on the oilers training staff. I am fully confident that kid on maybe 20 other teams would be producing at a top 9 level MINIMUM. He looks like he could be a legit top 6 guy.

Not so sure this will age too well. Only six games in with new team, but that skating is more than elite. Oilers didn't show any confidence in him, dmen take a long time to develop, and flat out oilers didn't play him. He could still crash and burn in STL, but man it looks brutal for oilers, especially with the horrible Nurse contract

He’s played the fifth most for all dmen in his draft class at the NHL level. He has played with Eckholm and was given a fantastic opportunity there. If him and his agent feel he needs to be a top pair somewhere he needs to check what all top 6 dmen deliver in the NHL. He is not it. Best of luck to him but he’s not ready. He was pretty much given the 6th spot to start the season but unfortunately the cap and the overall teams performance didn’t work out and he paid the price and was sent down. Bouchard was drafted the year before him at around the same spot and he is “mentioned” in Norris discussions and plays about 19 mins a game. This is one of those times the player needs to show more and complain less.

That's true - Oilers aren't in a position to allow someone to 'find his game' at the NHL level like Bouchard did a few years ago as they are in win now mode, that coupled with the fact that the Defense has been healthy for the past year and a half doesn't help any either.

If GMs are smart they'll evaluate about him what MTL could do with Lindstrom. He did not have the best camp nor the best first games of the season after his trade out of Detroit, and MTL still is in rebuilt with lower expectations than cup-contending teams, ok, but now after only a dozen games played Gustav has not only secured himself in the lineup, after a very solid improvement to his game, he's now started playing top pair along Matheson. Which is a feat no one (save maybe Grant McCagg) would've ever imagined when his move was announced. Proof when a player does not feel he's in the best place grow his confidence he cannot truly perform, get him to an environment he feels much better in next and you'll soon see him strive.

Broberg isn't going to play ahead of Nurse, Ekholm, or Kulak. He just doesn't look good on his off side. Look at the Oilers defense in 2019 and you can see why they took a defenseman but unfortunately after Byram and Seider the draft was a bust for D

The number one mistake Edmonton Oilers did was only focused on his defensive aspects of the game they didn't focus at all on his offensive until this last year but the kid has a good offense skill set on his own for me back then I hated the pic but now that I've watched over the years I think this is a case where the wrong team drafted him not the wrong overall if another team selected him in the same spot I think his development would have went a lot quicker like for example who's developed some pretty good defenseman lately LA Kings look at mat ray he was supposed to be just a 7th defenseman now he's a pretty good one if he went to LA he would probably be that defenseman by now
@powwowken276010 ай бұрын
I hope the guy can get the same result as Rasmus Sandin who went from being constantly cycled around and completely untrusted in Toronto to a 23 minute a night top pairing guy in Washington. Now sure, maybe that says more about Washington's current roster of Defensemen than it does about Sandin, but I can't help thinking that sort of change will make a massive difference in Sandin's development and future career.
@shanea88510 ай бұрын
I think trading Brett Kulak would be great but for the people against it saying “win mode” honestly don’t you know can trade Cody Ceci+Brett Kulak (combined $6M together) for High end RHD to help Darnell Nurse’s game and both can EAT 25+ minutes together which would help balance ice time and how they can help Broberg exceed FAST be impact in the lineup game in & game out
@danielnam902610 ай бұрын
This isn’t Walmart where you go down the “high end” RHD aisle and pick up that player. In order for a trade to occur you need 2 willing GMs to negotiate said transaction. Which GM is going to give up a high end RHD to the Oilers? And who is that player? Trading 2 experienced defensemen in Kulak and Ceci to get 1 upgrade on D is silly asset management. You’ve replaced 1 D but created another glaring hole in the roster.

I'll leave this here.. In the same draft year, just one season removed from his supposed 'breakout' campaign, Dylan Cozens has regressed MASSIVELY and I'd argue is one of the biggest reasons the Sabres not only miss the playoffs but do so by AT LEAST 10 points. Cozens and a journeyman D for Broberg, Gagner, and a pick. Both teams could use a change, let's be real here. Or keep the pick and Gagner and put Kane up instead. (Though he's been top 3 in playoff scoring for Edmonton every post-season, so maybe not 😂)

The thing is, there are just better options on the Edmonton blue line right now. Broberg hasn't stood out in any meaningful way in any of his games played over the past couple years. Unless you count stepping on a stick and falling on his ass to be meaningful. Even watching him, it's like he's afraid to actually get involved in the play on the ice. Maybe because every time he does, he ends up in the penalty box... But that I think is a failure on the coaching staff, not the player.

Broberg has been wasted with the Oilers. He has all the tools but he either gets time in the press box or gets 8 minutes a night on his off-hand. He should've been traded a year ago when it was clear he wouldn't beat anyone out on the left side. Edit: I definitely don't think he was drafted too high. He's just been so mishandled. But Holland was going to pick Sieder at 8th and when he was (surprisingly hecause he was projected 15th) picked by StevieY, they just went with Broberg but didn't have a proper plan for him.
