McDrai - maybe the two best hockey player of the NHL... you are right, that's wasting their talent. Sure, sometimes they loose a puck and then the danger of for a fast goal is high. But exactly that's the job of the GM putting the right players to have the team which can stop this dangers. This video shows all that nothing happened in the last years... What a desaster for the Oilers! Woody was a greatest coach, bit with this defensive players the best coach gets problems...

Don't forget how Holland's trade for Keith opened up Chicago to be able to offer Seth Jones to his massive deal, thereby increasing the market price for Nurse... who was signed after his career year... with one year left to at least see if he was, at the very least, able to repeat this success.

Another tie for #1 : Jesse Puljujarvi . Passing on Mathew Tkachuk to take Jesse and mismanage his development? Stick with him while he sulked and went back to Europe and came back and they stuck with him and stuck with him to the bitter end when he had lost all value . Look back how Glen Sather dealt with prospects ; He gave them a chance , if they didn't take off he moved them out . He didn't let Losers hang around for years poisoning the dressing room . Future #1 : Passing on goalie prodigy Jesper Wallstedt for..."fuck the future , we need to win now!" Fast forward to when Bourgault has been packaged in a deal for a second rate , broke-down goaltender and Leon and Connor have moved on . Cue the decade of darkness 2.0 .

Once Puljujarvi found his game under Dave Tippett I really thought he would stick around. The draft pick at the time was good. Puljujarvi was ranked top-5 in most draft rankings. Injuries and coaches that had no patience for him (McLellan and Woodcroft) destroyed his confidence. Also the team in his rookie season didn't provide a translator to help him with English to live in the city and he was isolated and alone most days. That can take a toll on anyone. He went back to Finland and came back to Edmonton rejuvenated and played well until Woodcroft became head coach. I agree about passing on Wallstedt. That still makes absolutely zero sense to this day and you're 100% right. The team will package whatever prospects we have left for a goalie now lmao

The move that still baffles me, passing on Jesper Wallstedt. One of the best goalies of the draft in the last couple years, Edmonton was gift wrapped Jesper as he fell after Detroit took Cossa.... but then traded down with the Wild. At the time Jack Campbell was fresh in the net and Skinner was also being looked at, idk you can argue Jesper may not pan out but honestly its just insane to me that you can be gifted a solution and just ignore it.

The disaster to beat all was the hiring of Chiarelli by Bobby Burger. He completely trashed that franchise which should have won 2 or 3 Cups by now. The next biggest disaster was hiring Holland who has finished off the job Chiarelli began. Bob Nicholson was also a disaster; maybe the biggest. PS: I wrote this before watching to the end of the video. I used to make contributions to the Oilers' message board and 2 minutes after the Chiarelli hiring was announced I went on there and said that he would destroy the franchise. I said the Reinhardt move was stupid as was the Lucic signing and the Taylor Hall trade. I was critical of many of the moves Chiarelli made and was roundly ridiculed by the people running that board as well as many of its other contributors. I remember McCurdy and Staples and the headline "Adam Larsson making Oilers' fans forget about Taylor Hall". I could go on and on but suffice it to say that even though I still like Edmonton and really am bummed that they didn't bring the Cup back to Canada some little part of me is hoping all those A-holes are choking on their love for and support of Peter "Bold Moves Chiarelli".

This team has been mismanaged long before McDavid arrived. Tambellini completely blew the 2012 draft with picking Nail Yakupov. They had three top pick scorers in Eberle, Hall, and Nugent-Hopkins, with a decent crew to round out the offense. Everyone knew they needed defense and goaltending. They wound up trading to get the #2 (Ryan Murray) AND #4 (Griffin Reinhart) picks from that year to shore up their defense and failed. Also, Andrei Vasilevsky went #19, do you think Edmonton might've traded down to get a him and a defenseman? How many cups would Edmonton have picking Vasylevsky and a middle late round defenseman like Olli Maata or Codi Ceci? I know hindsight is 20/20, but they had the opportunity to take a top defenseman or trade down and increase their potential assets, and instead the trend of the Oilers signature "all offense, no defense" and "just out score our opponents" has been a common theme since the 1980s. Edmonton has been a tire fire for over a decade. They made some playoff runs, sure, but it's been on the backs of their offense to outscore their the defense, and it shows when a team, like Vegas last year, shuts them down and runs them out of the playoffs.

Looking at this fine video, it is becoming increasingly clear why Vegas and to some extent Seattle as fresh start teams do better than most. They aren't burdened with either old contracts bound to almost-stars (Myers, Kassian, Campbell, etc.,) and they are able to hand pick management people who are post-Cap in mentality. They also don't have any pressure to win; people are just happy to have a team. Don't launch a land war in Asia, and don't look to free agency to cure problems in goal or in scoring would be the warning we should all heed. Draft for goalies, develop depth scoring largely through the draft, and avoid free agency at all costs. And of course, don't trade youthful talent for "role players", including "stay at home defensemen."

I'm sorry man, but this video is making Edmonton's management look so much worse than it is. Half of these are just minor signings where they ended up overpaying a bit. Every team makes these types of deals all the time. Kassian was bit of bad gamble, but nothing crazy. Trading for Keith wasn't a terrible move for a team in win-now mode. Especially considering all they gave was Caleb Jones. Broberg was a regular draft move. Teams draft off the board all the time, and when it works out they look like geniuses. The Eberle for Strome trade wasn't bad. Just because it didn't work out doesn't mean it was a stupid trade. Strome went on to NYR to average almost 70 points per 82 over the next 3 seasons and has been a better player than Eberle over the past 6 seasons. So how was that a bad move, just because Strome underperformed on Edmonton? So many of these are hindsight, not terrible moves at the time. If Campbell played like the All-Star goalie he was the previous year, everyone would be talking about how brilliant that signing was. But regardless, the goalie debates in Edmonton are always stupid. You can't judge a goalie by how they play on Edmonton's terrible defensive team. Good goalies always suck on Edmonton. The Reinhart one is always laughable. They likely wouldn't have gotten Barzal anyway, so adding that narrative is irrelevant. I agree a first and a second was too much for Reinhart, but if Holland thought they wouldn't get anyone better with the 16th pick, then it made sense.

The problem was the price they paid Kassian. I loved him, and was happy he turned his life around in Edmonton... but 3.2 million/yr for FOUR years for a guy that went on a 3 week shooting heater beside McDavid was a mistake. 4 years at 1.5 million would have been much more reasonable and then the team would have had the cap space to sign Nurse long-term for 7m/yr rather than having to bridge deal him a SECOND time. The Larsson-Hall trade happened on June 29, 2016. The same day as the Subban-Weber trade. 2 horrible trades happened the same day.

@Kwolf1 I remember before any news was official I originally thought it was maybe going to be Hall for Weber or Subban... but then it was even worse LOL not that I think Larsson was bad. Just the value was really bad for Edmonton. Would have liked to see Weber win the cup in 2021 with the Habs. What a warrior that dude was

14:17 I would argue that Jim Benning is the worst GM in the league during that time span, but I am just an angry Canucks fan who have to watch him ruined my favourite over the course of 7 seasons. This is a good lesson for teams to know that they should stop hiring dinosour old-school GMs that have been in the league for too long and not understand that the game/league has evolved and changed over time. Refusing to adapt to the new league and continue to run hockey teams like it were still the late 90s and early 2000s is the biggest problem for these GMs. GMs in today's game must be able to work collaboratively with all different staff throughout the organization from top to bottom; they must be willing to listen to new ideas and be ahead of the curve and understand that the league now is not the same league as 20 years ago.

Duncan Keith was a win! WTF is it on that list? You might argue the price was high, but it was clear that he would retire after one season and the Hawks would have not taken 50% of his cap. Oilers basically paid nothing for him. Nurse was pretty well at his 5,6m and if they would have gotten him at 6,5 or 7m long term it would actually be a great deal. I would have not signed him that year, there was actually the option to just keep his bridge deal and sign him later that year or let him walk. I also disagree with the Hall for Larsson trade - Hall had be inconsistent, ranging from 14goals up to 80 points, which he hit once with the Oilers. They never made the playoffs with him and traded him after a 65 point season. His production did fall in his first season with the devils and only then he had a MVP season in 17/18. Larsson was doing well with the Oilers and they miss a guy like him on the team. They would have a solid 1st line RD, with a good frame and a solid first pass. Signed for 4m he comes at great value, and the issue is that he walked away in the expansion draft due to personal reasons. For sure the Oilers would love to have Larsson still on the team and for sure they would have given him a 4m per year contract.

Hall had 1 fluke year in NJ to undeservedly win the Hart. He's done precisely jack, and s**t, otherwise. Not to mention, he's locker room cancer, which is quite well revealed in Edmonton circles of players. Hardly the #1 for any list. Hall, is washed up garbage these days, but he wasn't all too much better shortly after they dealt him. Larsson is still missed by most EDM fans, to this day.

Im no analyst, not completely up to date with every team or player however i am a long time NHL fan. Not sure ive seen a team make stranger decisions before. Im not even a Oilers fan but feel more frustrated for that team and fans than any other. You get the opportunity to have yet another superstar player yet do very little to build around him. Never a solid defense, goalies who arent even close to cup contenders and questionable additions. Mike Smith? Lucic? and i know Kane is a great player but i find it hard to believe hes good for any teams chemistry.
