Edsel was the name of Henry Ford's best friend when he was a child growing up. That's why Ford named his son Edsel.

Two Ford wives made an ultimatum to Henry Senior. I'm pretty sure his wife Clara said she'd leave him unless he resigned. I think the other was Edsel's widow; it was widely thought that Henry's constant browbeating contributed to Edsel's death. The Edsel show was mounted once they saw poor early sales. One of the stars was Rosemary Clooney, adored aunt of George. The stars appeared free as a favour, except Bing's son got $5000 I think.

British leyland had the absolute opposite problem, they absolutely refused to innovate, for example the allegro which was originally meant to be a hatchback but they already had a hatchback in the maxi, so they gave it a tiny little boot. it was supposed to be a nippy little town car but was instead given an existing engine and heating system that slowed the car down and gave it a bloated appearance. and it was supposed to go up against the Volkswagen golf. maybe you guys could do an episode on it.

Not its own Edsel line, but Edsels slipped into Ford and Merc production lines - thus much harder for workers to keep track of things usually habitual (that along with the resentment.)

Perhaps what Ford should of done was to launch the EDSEL as a small and medium size ENTRY level division making the Ford brand more upscale and Mercury as an Olds/Buick competitor with LINCOLN as thier top entry..

Hollywood should make a movie about the Edsel.

Interesting stuff. I had heard of the Edsel before and that it was a failure, but I never knew any details as to why or its history. That is crazy about the cars being shipped off incomplete.

Many people, including Senator Barry Goldwater, blamed the failure of the Edsel on Robert McNamara, who had no passion for cars and no business running a car company. The Edsel cost Ford roughly $350 million, $3 billion in 2020 dollars. Lee Iacocca who had a passion for cars, was the father of Ford Mustang and the Chrysler Mini-Van and was a positive creative force at Ford Mo Co, disapproved of McNamara's design and marketing decisions for the Edsel, especially the large toilet seat grille. The "Wizkid" McNamara was the real problem at Ford! LBJ and US Secretary of Defense McNamara placed American troops into the Vietnam war, that should never have been there. As many as 2 million Vietnamese civilians on both sides and some 1.1 million North Vietnamese and Viet Cong fighters, died. It is estimated that between 200,000 and 250,000 South Vietnamese soldiers died in that war. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C, is inscribed with the names of 57,939 members of U.S. armed forces who had died or were missing, additions to the list have brought the total past 58,200. (At least 100 names on the memorial are those of servicemen who were actually Canadian citizens.“) The F-111 Aardvark was another McNamara failure, it only worked after they quadrupled it's budget. It was called a Fighter, but couldn't dogfight. Eventually the US Air Force made it into a tactical bomber, but that took years. The US Navy rejected the F-111 naval version, because it was too heavy for carries, couldn't fight and couldn't defend the fleet. McNamara was president of the World Bank for 13 years is more evidence that he was part of the inner circle that represented the principalities and powers the rule the world. NWO Robert McNamare was a traitor to God, country and humanity.

Lots and LOTS of stuff wrong here... hah 1958 was the recession, not 1957... and it was short lived, btw the edsel came out in 1958.. and people were not interested in smaller cars in 1958...

Between the Edsel and the Pinto, Ford developed the Mustang. The Mustang was very successful.
