I am a nurse in San Francisco and I , too, have been made painfully aware of the endless forms created by this swollen administrative class - and all of it takes the nurse away from the bedside. Why, we have forms that must be filled out every 15 minutes(!) to document that our confused and restrained patients are safe. How on earth can any nursing be accomplished when every 15 minutes a form needs to be signed? This is but one example of the madness that exists in healthcare today. My suggestion: every time an administrator creates another "form" that must be juggled by the bedside nurse or doctor, another form must be removed from the paperwork burden managed by said nurse or doctor. Heresy? Or common sense?

San Francisco at one time had Laguna Honda, Hassler Health farm, free ambulance service and free emergency hospitals spread throughout the city. All were tax supported. Ancient history? No. Within living memory. What happened?

So much common sense and wisdom here , but it will certainly be lost on the " business" of health care in our current times .....There are major roadblocks to comprehensive health care ..The purposeful shortage of doctors as dictated by medical schools limited admissions .....The growing population etc..Therefore comprehensive health care will certainly be unatainable especially in urban areas....As Dr . Sweet indicates , health care providers will continue to be overwhelmed with forms to fill and will spend more time looking at the metrics in the computer screen during a patients exam ; rather than looking in their patients eyes .

It's as if there are government incentives and controls that lead to inefficiencies that are then blamed on the business administrators that are required by law to obey the incentives and controls. And then we demand more controls and incentives as the answer. We blame capitalism for the sins of statism and demand more statism.

huh? efficiency of being inefficient? sounds like collateral damage.
