It was originally named Tscherkessen Marsch (Circassian March) but Strauss decided to rename it to Egyptian March so he can perform it at the opening ceremony of the Suez Channel

I absolutely love this piece! I practically listen to this every day. This youth orchestra in particular is one of my favorites to listen to. They have amazing dynamics and a beautiful tone. Again, amazing job by the Polish youth orchestra!

In response to the inquiry of a year ago "Can anyone tell the occasion of this march?" In 1869 everybody was excited about the opening of the Suez Canal, which was the inspiration for Strauss to compose the Egyptian March. He conducted a number of 5-month concert seasons in Russia, and the march was given its first performance there. Strauss composed about 50 marches during the course of a 53+ year career. Yes, this is a very good performance. The pacing is just right; the worst thing you can do in Strauss performance is to rush things.
