An absolutely incredible flight, cannot believe how far you flew and how much wingsuit technology has developed over the years! How many kilometers did you cover? Do your limbs ever feel fatigued when flying, from spreading them out, or does the wind resistance and/or adrenalin help?
@DomeWingsuit2 жыл бұрын
It's about 7.5-8km. I did this flight 2 years ago, so I knew what was coming. Focus on breathing through nose, mouth closed, it dries out fast, ideal is a fullfacehelmet. Focus on sound (=airspeed) and pitch and keep on going! It's fckn far😆

@@DomeWingsuit Holy Sh-t, dude. Wow. Respect! Altitude difference between launch and landing? In traversing above that ridge, were you there to take advantage of updrafts in the manner of other gliding / soaring aircraft? If so, how much altitude can that gain you across that distance? Boggles my mind I’m even asking such a question. 🤪
@linuswalden2 жыл бұрын
@@DavJumps Alright - the vertical speed of a wingsuit, according to Redbull's website, is around 17 m/s. Ridge lift depends on the windspeed and geometry of the ridge. Though even if all of the wind on an extremely windy day (let's say 15 m/s (24 mph, or 54 km/h)) was directed directly upward thanks to a 90° cliff (which is unrealistic, as the wind would be slowed down by the upward change of direction), you would still not be able to counteract the sink rate of the wingsuit. The wind would be too strong to fly at all if it was strong enough to cause you to gain altitude. A good thermal can make the air rise at a speed of around 5 m/s, maaaaybe 10. This is also not enough to make the wingsuit gain altitude. Additionally, thermals are usually somewhat limited in their horizontal size, and with a horizontal speed of 50 m/s (180 km/h), you would pass through it in a matter of seconds. Now, there is one hypothetical way you could gain altitude naturally using a wingsuit: In a thunderstorm, air can sometimes rise at up to 30 m/s. In theory, this would allow you to gain altitude with a wingsuit. However, as you would be in a thunderstorm, you would be thrown around so violently, that you would most certainly lose control which would make you fall a lot more than you would be flying - causing you to have a higher sink rate - causing you to not gain altitude anymore. Apart from that, the rain and potential hail inside of the thunderstorm cloud would hit you at around 200 km/h, which would, at the very least, be very unpleasant. That is if you survive the lightning strikes. All in all, probably not such a great idea. Though maybe the thermals directly above an active volcano would work? ;)
@DavJumps2 жыл бұрын
@@linuswalden Yes, of course. I suppose to avoid confusion I should have asked “how much altitude loss can be prevented?” … when the point of my query was to learn if he intentionally flew over the ridge (as opposed to further to the right of left of it) to extend his range, because flying through the rising air (if there was any - obviously I wasn’t there that day and can’t see or feel the effects of the from where I’m sitting today) could indeed slow his descent (not aerodynamically, but in relation to the ground inevitably rising up below him). By “altitude gained” I meant altitude saved. Did flying over the ridge for as long as he did put him, say, 1000’ (300 meters) higher at the narrowing of the valley, where he hooked the right, than he otherwise would have been taking a different, perhaps more direct path? Or the same path but on a day with less favorable ridge-soaring conditions? Or was he simply flying over it because it provided the coolest view? I fly parachutes that can keep up (down, really) with wingsuiters. When configured that way, long range is not their strong point. I’ve never had the opportunity to test if seeking thermals could help me back from a long spot when participating in such flights. But when not weighted down, even on a fast descending wing, I know it’s relatively trivial to extend my range (and perhaps lessen the distance I’ll need to walk) by overflying a conveniently placed runway with a baking asphalt surface (for example).
