The passage of the Kansas-Nebraska act drove many northerners to form Anti-Nebraska coalitions that ultimately yielded the Republican Party. The election of 1856 did not yield a Republican presidential victory, but it did produce a party that, through compromise and political maneuvering, was able to emerge as the dominant new party to compete with the bitterly divided Democrats.
Chris Calton gives a revisionist look at the antebellum period leading up to the Civil War. This is the ninth episode in the second season of Historical Controversies.

I love these episodes, but something has happened to the audio in the last couple episodes...sounds like you're under water.

Media companies have make a profit. Fine with me. I object to them trying to explain to my tiny brain that whatever “their” party advocates is for my own good. That insults my core.

Chris Calton gives an over-all informative presentation, but he frequently makes dubious and questionable claims without providing evidence to back them up. In this episode he asserts that the original Republican Party platform advocated denying free Blacks political rights 33:03. I can find no evidence to corroborate this fantastic claim, and I wonder on what evidence or basis Calton makes this claim. Here is the official platform of the 1856 Republican Party: www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/republican-party-platform-1856

I would describe permitting Federal military supplies and facilities to be absconded with is more than punting, it was tacit approval of the insurrectionist moves of the slave power.

@@roryross3878 I think he's also making a joke about President Buchanan's homosexual identity.
