After John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry, the South was on edge. The Republican Party, in their eyes, was proof of the overwhelming presence of violent abolitionists in the North. The result was a North-South split in the Democrat Party, threats of secession if a Republican won, and a four-way presidential race.
Chris Calton gives a revisionist look at the antebellum period leading up to the Civil War. This is the 23rd episode in the second season of Historical Controversies.

The Articles of Confederation joined the states "in perpetual union". That clause wasn't included in the Constitution because once you've joined in perpetual union, there's no need to repeat it.

That's illogical so by not as not stating it's perpetual makes it perpetual??? In reality the colonies were divided and wanted freedom, hence the compromise for limited government. Hamilton VS Jefferson is basically the same battle

@@Rays_Bad_Decisions Wrong, it's not illogical. If you enter into a perpetual union with your wife, then you can't break it at a later date when you're repeating your vows. See 7seals.blogspot.com - only the Returned Christ, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln, and Albert Einstein reincarnated could produce that. It's triggered The Apocalypse/Revelation qgich is NOT the 'end of the world'.

I AM Abraham Lincoln reincarnated. The Republican Party was started c 1856 to stop the spread of slavery into the western territories which was a liberal stance. Lincoln was the first openly anti-slavery president which is why the evil conservative Southerners seceded. In 1866, all the newly freed blacks were Republican. Beginning with Franklin Roosevelt but especially with John F. Kennedy in 1960 & LBJ in 1964, blacks switched in mass to Democrats. Today, 95% of blacks are liberal Democrats. Interestingly, if the South had just refrained from succession? Slavery would have probably lasted longer. However, the clock was definitely ticking.

Chris Calton's assessment of Abraham does not do him justice. If we take "Honest Abe" at his word, then in the context of the social, political, and military factors and events, Lincoln's words are both consistent and logical. He was a pragmatic moderate on abolition, but an abolitionist at heart nonetheless. He viewed as his mandate and duty to prohibit the spread of slavery into the territories and to hold the United States of American together. Both were essential goals in the greater aspiration of abolishing slavery. And when the time was right and the opportunity arose, he emancipated those slaves that he believed he had the authority to emancipate under the guidelines of the U.S. Constitutions. As far as Lincoln's moniker of "Honest Abe", there is a long history and precedence for that name. True it was also a great campaign slogan as Calton implies at 38:53, but it wasn't simply something coined for his political campaign. It is verifiable that Abraham Lincoln had long established his reputation as an honest and trustworthy individual. I know of no instances where he broke his word or violated that trust. He may have changed his views or altered his specific objectives as circumstances changed and dictated, but even those actions are consistent with the policies and views he expressed all along. There might be one or two exceptions that seem out of character, but those are outliers and certainly are not definite or pivotal events. Here are just a few sources I have found searching online that confirm Abraham Lincoln's established reputation as someone who was honest and trustworthy: greatamericanhistory.net/honesty.htm Leidner, Gordon. "Abraham Lincoln's great laws of truth, integrity: A long career ruled by honesty". Washington Times Civil War Page, February 20, 1999. www.csmonitor.com/1987/0210/labra-f.html Marquand, Robert. "The Illinois town where `Honest Abe' earned his nickname". The Christian Science Monitor, February 10, 1987. www.fpri.org/article/2008/06/honest-abe-abraham-lincoln-and-the-moral-character/ Howe, Walker Howe. "HONEST ABE: ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND THE MORAL CHARACTER" FPRI’s Wachman Center, Vol. 13, No. 16, June 2008. housedivided.dickinson.edu/sites/lincoln/honest-abe/ A collection of documents and sources examining the question: Did Lincoln deserve the nickname, “Honest Abe”?

the sincerity of a politician stands in his actions - Mr.Lincoln' s inner thoughts are irrelevant, we judge him by the Emancipation proclamation and the 13th Amendament because these actions define his struggle and his role in American history

I agree, the 2020 election was rigged by the Democrats Party. Because the Democrats were taking revenge for losing the 2016 election, and the failed on the Russian Hoax and the impeach trail and etc. They couldn't win the 2020 election legitimately, and now the Democratic Party control the government. God help us all!!
