@@TheNarrowboatPirate the silence is bizarre at first isn’t it? I had a very similar reaction to being in an electric car for the first time 🙂 I kept asking - is it still running? How do you know that it’s running? And then two minutes later - is it running now? You made a really good observation though - I think that it would be easy to fall asleep cruising along with just the sounds of rippling water and beautiful birdsong. Thank goodness there’s no comfy pilot/driver’s seat on that boat. Actually, now I think about it, It’s more like the old horse drawn days would have sounded , minus the clip clop from the towpath. 🙂 Beautiful 🙂

If you recall ‘Narrowboat Life Unlocked’ released a video about this years Crich Show, in which they interviewed a lady that owned and operated a electric / diesel hybrid as a singlehanded live a board. A very impressive boat/ controls and interior. Very similar to this one. A singlehanded feature on the Crich boat was the ability to stand on the lock landing / top and drive in the boat by radio control!!!!!

I love the sound of you boats motor, there is something very comforting about that noise the old Petter makes moreover it goes with your tunes perfectly. If you had an electric boat, you'd be creeping up on people you'd have to blow your horn even when you don't swear or cuss *LOL*....and that wouldnt be right. All Pirates swear and cuss at times as do we all. What a nice dog Russel has I bet it reminds you of darlin Puddin. We don't have anything like the canals here in the states. I wish we did because I swear I was born to live on a Narrow. We have natural creeks that size and bigger but if you tried to put a boat on it and live on it they would lock you up and impound your boat. Your canals are truly a way to be as free as possible and I hope you guys are able to preserve that for centuries to come.

Really enjoyed this one Cap’n H! Lovely piece to camera about that brilliantly novel boat. Cheerful engaging and funny, but still asking questions, finding answers. The boat is effectively diesel-electric like a conventional submarine, a big battery bank for silent running and a diesel for top-up. The difference being it didn’t look to have a driveshaft from the diesel. I think its a great concept and fantastic during a sunny summer. The boat fit out is just great and I love the name. Mind you, I don’t fancy having to replace that bank of batteries when the time comes a few years down the line. Also I’m wary of relying on software and short-life technology like phones when support for both is fragile and so very brief of late. Don’t forget your noisy old engine can be readily fixed by a heavily sweating person in a string vest by hitting it with a mallet and wrapping petticoats around steam pipes….as described in the narrowboat documentary “The African Queen”.

The generator and drive motor are not directly connected it's a serial hybrid not a parallel hybrid the tec works on any phone it's a app additional there is a screen in the boat with the same info on it. any mechanical part can be replaced or serviced like any engine.

Hard to get, but a rum I had years ago in Scotland is OVD, or Old Vatted Demerera. Don't know if you have tried it, but it is a good sipping rum and goes very well with mixers. It comes from Guyana and is blended and bottled in Glasgow.

Lots of boats have lithium LifePO4 which is very safe it’s only lithium ion with is dangerous

Heidi...I guess I am old, but I like the interior of your boat better and I like your coal heater better...I think you might have the best of both worlds with some solar and lithium batts...and I bet the cost to buy your boat is way less.... still electric might be the future...time will tell...I put a Dickinson Diesel Heater on my sailboat, and nothing beats a real fire with the dry heat and ambiance that flames put out. Interesting video, thank you. Loved learning about how to make an all electric canal boat work. It is the way the world has to go I guess. I do however love the sound of the Lister, I shall miss that in the years to come, you can't beat it.. unless of course you've got a Bollinder engine.

Morning Heidi, Great to see you, and viewing the electric boat. It does seem quiet when going along. I'm in the older generation and being bought up in the garage business, I am still in the engine phase. But at the end of the day, they still need the backup -old engine! Thanks Bill, they don’t actually have an engine … just a silent genny and the electric motor … the genny charges the batteries but can also power the motor and charge batteries at the same time if needed 😃🏴‍☠️

Interesting vlog on an electric narrowboat. Noticed there was no mention of cost. I'd be curious to see how an electric compares to a boat powered by diesel, same size and such. Bet they had to pay plenty for the electric version and all those batteries! Still, it's interesting and a viable option for those who can afford it.
