I wasn't sure what was so special about a bridge with a church at either end. I live in a town of about 1000 just outside a city of 1/2 million+ and we have three churches in town (because the other two closed). The names "All Saints" and "St.Mary's" made me think they were Anglican and Catholic so having them next to each other would be as ordinary as having McDonald's next to Burger King.
@rmsgrey2 жыл бұрын
Fact check: Mrs Doubtfire was actually named after the book it was based on, "Madame Doubtfire" ("Alias Madame Doubtfire" in the US), so that, at least wasn't Robin Williams improvising on the set. My theory on the Danish supermarket prices was that the question had been carefully worded and the equivalent of $6 was in Kr, while the $150 was priced in US dollars, and it was an example of tourist pricing - one price for locals (in the local currency) and another for tourists (in foreign currency)
@retrogiftsuk48122 жыл бұрын
Regarding the Mrs Doubtfire being made up I was getting a nervous twitch when that was said... Also several cities in the UK have multiple cathedrals. I knew this as I live in Portsmouth which has 2, as does Liverpool, Newcastle and Norwich (though I had to look up those places) (this podcast could do with a corrections bit at the end) Apart from that I like it.
@CamboPlays2 жыл бұрын
@@retrogiftsuk4812 i believe they meant only one cathedral per denomination, Liverpool has a Protestant one and a catholic one
@rin_etoware_29892 жыл бұрын
@@retrogiftsuk4812 yea, but that's because different sects need different cathedrals. it is very much normal to see in cities the One Big Cathedral for the established Church of the place, then a multitude of other cathedrals for smaller sects. even then, the rule is the same: a sect shouldn't have two cathedrals in the same city. a few exceptions exist, but they only serve to prove the rule-Dublin's two Church of Ireland cathedrals only came about as the result of a weird dispute, Warsaw's two Catholic cathedrals is a significantly newer arrangement to deal with rapid urban expansion, same with London's two* Anglican cathedrals.
@TomekSmykowski2 жыл бұрын
@@rin_etoware_2989 There are also some weird cases. Generally in catholic church a cathedral is a main seat of bishop (for this discussion I am using wider meaning of word bishops to include archbishops) and the main seat is only one. In case of Warsaw everything is according to this rule - there are two dioceses, one on each side of Vistula river, and cathedrals are in each of them, but happen to be in one city. Sometimes bishop has additional seat that is officially a co-cathedral but people call it also a cathedral. Co-cathedrals often are in different cities than cathedrals but sometimes an old cathedra gets to be a co-cathedra e.g. in Salamanca, Spain. And then there is diocese of Zaragoza also in Spain which has two cathedrals in one diocese.

It's certainly special, but nothing on Julie d'Aubigny levels of bonkers. Any polyathlete (decathlete, heptathlete, etc) already has some alround athletic ability. Back when I did it in my youth, I could pick up any other sport and be instantly good at it, because of that base line of athleticism. This is also a time where there was much less specialization and much fewer people that went into sports. In essence, he went to university (because he was well off), uni allowed him to pursue sports which made him fit enough to do different things with it - and also fit enough to look good so they wanted him in one movie. Ultimately, he wasn't great enough at anything, so he kept with university and became a dentist. He also barely made it past 32, so I guess he did have something in common with Julie d'Aubigny after all.

The died-in-the-bath thing is mixing Archimedes up with Seneca, who was absolutely metal: Seneca preached stoicism, so when he was ordered by the emperor to kill himself, he just went and cut his veins. But the blood came out very slowly, as he was very old, so he decided to take poison instead. He did, but the poison wouldn't work because it needed a certain temperature and Seneca was really cold because of all the blood loss. So he went and made himself a bath to warm up, got in there and then died. Edit: fact checked the last part, he probably wanted to warm up not for the poison to work but to increase his blood flow, and the poison was simply non-fatal

Fun fact, brought to mind by the bridge question! There's a town in Vermont, USA, called Westminster. It has a few wee villages surrounding it, one called Westminster Station (because there was a train station there way back when), another called North Westminster, and yet another, off to the west, that... *isn't* called West Westminster, as one might anticipate, but rather, Westminster West.
