That's definitely one of the nicest things about him as a guest. He's wonderfully adept at managing boundaries in a positive way. I think part of it is that he values the craft of showmanship. The way the "dump" button worked back when I worked on live call-in TV shows was that the show was always on a 5 second delay, but the button controlled the audio going out over the air. If a caller said something obscene, the sound guy had 5 seconds to hit the button and keep it down until the broadcast would be past the point of the call being dropped. The sound guy and call screener had to be listening intently the entire time and the host would do his best to keep a straight face, knowing that the viewers would only see him and hear the audio drop out for a few seconds and probably never know what actually happened. In my years of audio production for live TV, I think I only used that button once.

In case you guys are interested, here are my thoughts regarding protecting your kids from the internet. I'm no expert, but I am a parent who has been through some shit with my kids, and I work in an information field. My kids are teens, so also it's possible this advice may soon be outdated. But anyways... App limits are good; keeping an eye on what your kids are consuming is good. Making your home a safe place for your kids to talk about what they're consuming without fear of judgement is good (strict parents run the risk of raising good liars). Also - and this is a big one - I think it's becoming more and more important to start teaching kids media literacy from as young as age as possible. Keep it age appropriate; start out with underscoring the difference between what's real and what's pretend (this is not a new concept; it's literally a developmental milestone). Move on to explaining how so much of what's out there, from fairy tales to TV shows to movies to KZbin to TikTok, is designed to keep you interested and entertained, so a lot of it is made up or exaggerated - sometimes people act really rude or silly or do dangerous things to make people laugh or scare them. But it's not okay to do those things in real life because you could upset someone, or get hurt. There are lots of good resources out there for teaching kids these things. Being a Canadian of a certain age, I still remember our beloved House Hippos psa as an early example of this. Go look it up, I'm sure it's on KZbin somewhere. In general, keep talking; don't underestimate what kids are capable of understanding. Build a trusting, respectful relationship with them. That fixes so many issues.

@aarontheperson6867
@aarontheperson6867 Жыл бұрын
@@sheilaross1449 no problem! i totally agree with the whole "giving a shit" thing. kids don't care if you're a "perfect" parent, the effort is what matters more i feel. and being able to admit your mistakes and change?? i feel like that is one of the biggest pillars for parents to build a strong, trusting connection with their kids, besides just being a good trait to have!

No kids, and not really a serious idea, but I do sometimes wonder how practical it would be to restrict the toys/entertainment a kid had to stuff pre-2000 or so, at least until elementary. Let them get cracked at Mario 64 or whatever.
@sheilaross1449
@sheilaross1449 Жыл бұрын
@@Appletank8 it would be way too hard to enforce, public pushback would be significant, and even at that age school is getting more and more dependent on tech as well. 49:40 I think the main thing with extremely long form content is that people put it on in the background while they do something like cleaning or work or (as a student) homework, etc. they listen to them when they're doing things that take a long time and they want some form of background noise. I know I do that when I'm doing the 'tedious' parts of survival or RPG games (grinding levels, gathering heaps of materials for in-game projects or crafting recipes, etc. where I'm just doing mundane tasks)

For any Irish viewers like myself who never heard of Bobby Fingers, you won't believe me when I say this but Bobby is actually Mr Chrome from The Rubberbandits! I was already blown away by his Jacko diorama to begin with but when I learned this it all made so much sense For context for everyone else, The Rubberbandits were a comedy music duo who wore plastic bags on their heads and had the country in a vice grips for years, since then the other lad, Blindboy Boatclub runs a brilliant podcast about just about anything. I'd always wondered where Mr Chrome had disappeared to

Bobby Fingers is so underrated. I have not laughed so hard in recent memory, and have not had my expectations so subverted, as when I was watching Bobby Fingers. It's a MUST watch.

I really like this "more loose" Tom, and hoping they do/did the Tesla truck idea... Something I would love to see also is gameshow(s) in Tom Scott style and in Safety third style, between the two crews (technical difficulties vs Safety third) - would require another judge than Tom though...

I HIGHLY recommend Bobby Fingers if you haven't watched him. Its weird, I wanna say he's most similar to Captain Disillusion? But really they're worlds apart, but they have a similar "Total artistic integrity over every aspect of the production" thing going on.

Happy to see Tom back on. btw, personally for me, < 30 minutes watched in 1 sitting, > 50 I will usually watch in 2-3 sittings, if it's an interesting video (like this one actually!). < 10 minutes, I can easily binge 3-6 without really noticing time has passed. I have problems concentrating anyway... But ye short format is easier to binge for sure, but longer formats feel more fulfilling once you fully watch them through.

One that I came up with that we used to use on the phone when our parents walked in was "air", an acronym for "Adult In Room". I wonder sometimes if our 'rents ever caught on, or wondered why the hell we were always studying the atmosphere and absolutely nothing else. Three-way phone call chains went psycho in the 90s. We'd have like nine people on the line and the first and last people in the chain couldn't hear each other for ish. Ah. Good times with homemade party lines, baebeeeeee

Ive thought about the dump button idea for too long as well, usually it works by slowing down the feed by 1-2% and building up the buffer. Though as Tom said you'd need to have a local buffer before sending it to encode.

A little tip on the "toy that never gets boring" problem: create interest through scarcity. Don't give them access to all the toys all the time. If you buy a new thing, put an old thing they aren't currently playing with away for a bit. Rotate the options. This works very well for toddlers.

For the topic at like 52:00, The h3 Podcast has that. Where he pushes a big red button (and a yellow button at the same time, video and audio), and it goes to a waiting screen for 20 seconds or whatever they had set it to (so as it can recoup that buffer back for future button presses), and then the show resumes after some fun waiting-screen stuff plays. They press it all the damn time lol. Tom said 10k, but I believe theirs was 20 thousand dollars lol.

Would love to see Alpha Phoenix on! Ben Krasnow would be awesome too can't imagine how that'd go lmao. As for long form content. I used to not watch it as much but have a lot more now with my new job I have to drive or occasionally fly to job sites. Even when I'm on site the work will switch between troubleshooting and then sitting around waiting. It'd come off not great if i was reading a book or staring at my phone so it's nice listening to topics I'm interested in while still looking like i'm focused lmao.
