I think the title is supposed to be: ““The Internet is Cursed”, with Tom Scott”. The way it is currently written, “The Internet is Cursed with Tom Scott”, makes it sound like Tom Scott is a curse on the internet.

That's definitely one of the nicest things about him as a guest. He's wonderfully adept at managing boundaries in a positive way. I think part of it is that he values the craft of showmanship. I would venture a guess that he views going into his personal life as a type of poor showmanship - and that partly drives his preference for privacy.

The way the "dump" button worked back when I worked on live call-in TV shows was that the show was always on a 5 second delay, but the button controlled the audio going out over the air. If a caller said something obscene, the sound guy had 5 seconds to hit the button and keep it down until the broadcast would be past the point of the call being dropped. The sound guy and call screener had to be listening intently the entire time and the host would do his best to keep a straight face, knowing that the viewers would only see him and hear the audio drop out for a few seconds and probably never know what actually happened. In my years of audio production for live TV, I think I only used that button once.

In case you guys are interested, here are my thoughts regarding protecting your kids from the internet. I'm no expert, but I am a parent who has been through some shit with my kids, and I work in an information field. My kids are teens, so also it's possible this advice may soon be outdated. But anyways... App limits are good; keeping an eye on what your kids are consuming is good. Making your home a safe place for your kids to talk about what they're consuming without fear of judgement is good (strict parents run the risk of raising good liars). Also - and this is a big one - I think it's becoming more and more important to start teaching kids media literacy from as young as age as possible. Keep it age appropriate; start out with underscoring the difference between what's real and what's pretend (this is not a new concept; it's literally a developmental milestone). Move on to explaining how so much of what's out there, from fairy tales to TV shows to movies to KZbin to TikTok, is designed to keep you interested and entertained, so a lot of it is made up or exaggerated - sometimes people act really rude or silly or do dangerous things to make people laugh or scare them. But it's not okay to do those things in real life because you could upset someone, or get hurt. There are lots of good resources out there for teaching kids these things. Being a Canadian of a certain age, I still remember our beloved House Hippos psa as an early example of this. Go look it up, I'm sure it's on KZbin somewhere. In general, keep talking; don't underestimate what kids are capable of understanding. Build a trusting, respectful relationship with them. That fixes so many issues.

@@aarontheperson6867 that is a very kind thing to say; thank you. My spouse and I are not perfect; we've just learned a lot over the years and been willing to admit when we were wrong and course correct. @aarontheperson6867
@aarontheperson6867 8 ай бұрын
@@sheilaross1449 no problem! i totally agree with the whole "giving a shit" thing. kids don't care if you're a "perfect" parent, the effort is what matters more i feel. and being able to admit your mistakes and change?? i feel like that is one of the biggest pillars for parents to build a strong, trusting connection with their kids, besides just being a good trait to have!
@Appletank8
@Appletank8 8 ай бұрын
No kids, and not really a serious idea, but I do sometimes wonder how practical it would be to restrict the toys/entertainment a kid had to stuff pre-2000 or so, at least until elementary. Let them get cracked at Mario 64 or whatever.
@sheilaross1449
@sheilaross1449 8 ай бұрын
@@Appletank8 it would be way too hard to enforce, public pushback would be significant, and even at that age school is getting more and more dependent on tech as well. I think unless we can better regulate dangerous content in the first place, the best bet is just to educate kids and empower them as young as possible.

If Tom wants to know more about the button that deletes the last 10 seconds of live shows, he should speak to Dan of the H3 podcast. As far as I know they are the first livestream creators on youtube or twitch to use it. They have not one, but two of those buttons. Very expensive stuff.

@elfpi55-bigB0O85 idk about H3H3's button, but a similar one is used in radio to cover sneezes, coughs, and the like. it works by delaying the actual live broadcast by 10 seconds, and if you need to sneeze you press the button, it stops broadcasting, you sneeze, you hit it again to start broadcasting again, and you go about your show, ideally the audience never notices you even paused.

A little tip on the "toy that never gets boring" problem: create interest through scarcity. Don't give them access to all the toys all the time. If you buy a new thing, put an old thing they aren't currently playing with away for a bit. Rotate the options. This works very well for toddlers.

One idea on how to avoid clickbait and reward content for being interesting to the viewers: show each viewer a graph of connections (visual representation) to content they’ve watched and let them manually tend to it by cutting links or marking nodes they’d like to see more of. The big companies don’t have to give away the secret sauce of their algorithms but there’s a better way than click throughs, likes, and doom scrolling.

We've decided our kids aren't getting smart phones until they're at the very least 15. We might do later depending, but not earlier. It shouldn't be too hard since many parents in our area are doing that. But our oldest isn't quite 7, so we have some time before we make a hard rule. We do have a family computer in a main area with restrictions, luckily my husband has extensive background in computers and electronics and can make sure things are secure. And they do have tablets, but they don't have browsers or streaming services, just educational apps and books to read. We also have an extensive physical children's book collection with probably a few hundred books thanks in no small part to my mom, a retired children's librarian, and I've sort of wanted to get a whole encyclopedia set like I had growing up. If they want to watch something they have to ask mommy or daddy to cast something to the tv or play a blu-ray.

From Spotify: This is one of the podcasts I listened to on my drive to work. I typically go between 55-65MPH when on the parkway.

In my generation the equivalent of 5 minute crafts was the anarchist's cookbook. I found a copy randomly in a bunch of second hand Amiga disks.

hbomb's video has 10M now and it's 2 weeks old. I've watched it in full 3 times and tbh it's one of the most important videos on KZbin in the past like. 5 years.

When Tom said Bobby fingers I was refreshing my recommended and a Bobby fingers video was first. I’d never heard of him before this… is that something KZbin does? 🤣🤣

For the topic at like 52:00, The h3 Podcast has that. Where he pushes a big red button (and a yellow button at the same time, video and audio), and it goes to a waiting screen for 20 seconds or whatever they had set it to (so as it can recoup that buffer back for future button presses), and then the show resumes after some fun waiting-screen stuff plays. They press it all the damn time lol. Tom said 10k, but I believe theirs was 20 thousand dollars lol.

54:00 kneecoleslaw reference. I never watched her really but I was a friend of a friend basically. What happened was her cat was begging for pets and got its claw stuck in her skin in such a way that it couldn't get down off her knee. When that happens you have to manhandle the cat to get the claw out and make sure it doesn't move enough to panic, and at the same time you're in pain, and that's what she did, and people were like, 'OMG she just like broke her cats paw and swore at it!' The cat was fine. It was a ridiculous situation.
