@@tovahwulfno, not unless SH is a place outside of normal time, which I suppose is entirely possible. But beyond that, SH3 is supposed to take place roughly around the time the game released, and while there's some mystery and disagreement about the SH2 time frame, Masahiro Ito tweeted that SH2 takes place in the late 70s or early 80s. Which would be why there is a computer seen in Brookhaven Hospital in SH3 but no computers at all are seen in SH2. Naturally, it's all very open to interpretation, but based on the information available, outside of some strange time warp scenario, there's little chance of SH2 and SH3 taking place at the same time.

One indie horror game that caught my attention was Darkwood. It doesn't have much resemblance to Silent Hill, but it's a really good horror 5 it's an indie project made by a small studio. Meanwhile, Konami is imitating the indie games made for and by Tumblr people. However, I'm hopeful that more indie developers will start to rise up and create good horror games that could have the magic that made Silent Hill so special.

Comments like these here make me question how many people actually played or understood anything about the original Silent Hill games or mind-trippy horror at all. People bringing the lore into it in some "but this way the cult should be connected with that and that would explain this" seem to be especially out of it. One of the key aspects of the original Silent Hill games was that the town meant different things in the context of different stories. Even Silent Hill 1 and 3 could be happening in completely different universes, because the material reality of this world is not what is important, it is the stories, the emotion, the musical and visual elements, the mechanisms of fear that connect them, and especially the exploration of darkness within the player, not some characters in a horror context. This game is the first true Silent Hill title (aside from P.T) since "Silent Hill 4: The Room", because it knows it is not the specific town, Pyramid Head or the cult that are holding this series together. This game explains the title in one way, the next the other. Silent Hill games should never become this safe family-friendly sitcom-tv series type of predictable and comfortable stuff with returning characters ("Here's Pyramid Head and the cult again") these supposed "fans" seem to be pushing it towards. What the town is about has been up in the air since the first game. People fixated on some specific one thing ("It's hell", "It's about the cult") are not getting it. It's meant to be up in the air, just as Twin Peaks the TV-series or other David Lynch movies. That's what separates it from other safer by-the numbers horror like Resident Evil.

@@udopadrik9971You're barking at the wrong tree, as I've always maintained that Silent Hill as a franchise should be put to rest altogether, exactly because i don't care about fan service at all. You don't need Silent Hill to create psychological or metaphorical horror, it existed before it, and it exists still after it. If you do slap the brand "Silent Hill" on the cover, i think it's fair to ask: Why? The only thing tying the first 4 together was the titular town, a vague notion that trauma molded the horrors, and some loose lore connective tissue. There's nothing unique to Silent Hill in the idea that a character goes through a metaphorical journey through hell, to get over a trauma. My comment, anyway, focused exactly on their unwillingness to engage with their new setting (Germany) in any culturally or even aesthetically significant way, making it particularly anonymous.
@udopadrik9971
@udopadrik9971 10 ай бұрын
@isvoltoWell, it is quite common opinion that psychological horror reached its highest form in the original four Silent Hill games, and although there have been good horror games before and since I'd agree nothing I've come to contact with has reached the level. Simple fan-service would be quite hard for me to accept, but the continuation of the story-telling, the ideas, mechanics, underlying concepts I find could result in amazing results, because aside from a few successful things horror game creators seem to have been as headless chicken in the following years, not really coming up with anything as significant as the Silent Hill series sort of promised, and seem to have mostly only forgotten stuff achieved in those. Now, when anyone with artistic talent has revisited those and drawn new inspiration from them it has given a surge or energy to horror game development and mechanics in general. I'm not only thinking "P.T" and the cancelled "Silent Hills" project, which sort of gave a basis fora wave of indie titles and the new Resident Evil games to happen that have now been following the Silent Hill games in many aspects, I'm also thinking the From Software games. Even if those are not in any way officially inspired by Silent Hill games, they are very much drawing from a lot of the things that had before them reached their high point in Silent Hill games. I would totally agree with you if horror game developers showed some capacity of following some ideas as ambitious as in the original Silent Hills or connected with the mostly failed Kojima reboot (P.T definitely was not a remake). Because of that I say the Silent Hill brand as a slight link to the past that could actually give some potential innovation in connected genres. The game not doing something specific to Germany I see as no problem at all. These games thrive in being universal in some way, not giving a "realistic" representation connected to some setting. The first games taking place in America had very little importance. It was slightly "off" representation of American, and the games benefited from it instead of being hurt by it. This is also true of this new one in connection to taking place in some fictional form of Germany, just as David Lynch's "Inland Empire" scenes in Poland were never meant to give off any "realistic" aspects about life in Poland. Hoping for something like that in "non-realistic" fiction seems misguided and missing the point.

I really think it was for the best with PT, staying as an enticing little demo. Can you imagine Kojima's wacky product placement in the middle of a Silent Hill story? You know he would've gone for it, come on now. He wasn't the guy for the job, and it's actually better that we never found that out. I watched a playthrough of Death Stranding, the big toy he mentions in PT as bringing to the table. Did you? Great intimate moments of small-scale personal subjects acted beautifully but not interconnected much, between characters with stupid names and confused motivations, ruined by "cheeky" comedy nonsense, jobs-for-mates cameos and most of all, bewilderingly bad big-scale philosophical bollocks, in a world that doesn't make sense. With a genuinely impressive innovative carrying system that'd do a lot better in a game that took itself a lot less seriously. I don't want that in Silent Hill thanks. PT is decent for what it is, but overrated, and not very Silent Hill at all. Sure it would've been better than a lot of other stuff that did get made. But why's that a standard? I think this has become a pin for hopes more than it ever was a realistic prospect.

I'm just saying that, by the evidence of the game he made instead that PT deliberately makes reference to (quote: "I'll be back, and I'm bringing my new toys with me"), this would've been a complete mess of a Silent Hill game that didn't fit the tone at all. I have a few guesses for you. My first is that you never played through (or even watched through) PT. My second is that you never did the same thing for Death Stranding. I know that it's a different game, but it was still his response to getting fired from PT. It's full of monster energy drink close-ups, it's full of dumb comedic moments that don't work, some of the serious dialogue in emotional moments is some of the most embarrassing stuff ever put to video game (take the running along the beach scene where the main character compares himself to Mario), the plot makes no sense, the villain has no motivation or logic, the combat sequences are exciting enough but don't feel like they add anything and get old fast. It doesn't know whether it wants to be a walking/carrying simulator, or an epic adventure game, and gets stuck in a really awkward place between both. Characters are called things like DieHardMan and Fragile. What the hell is that. Forgive me for supposing that someone who handles a game like that, might not be the perfect choice for Silent Hill. It's still a shame that he never got to try, and it was still shit what Konami did to him. But the only reason people think they missed out on a masterpiece, was that we never got the masterpiece. I don't think it would've been a masterpiece. I don't think it would've been very good at all. Better than a pachinko machine? Absolutely, no doubt about it. A decent enough game by itself? Much like some of the outsourced entries before, maybe so. But a good Silent Hill game? No. People are kidding themselves.

You saying "oh, this is for gen z huh?" shows you're not the target audience for this game. It may have been a while since you've been in school, but the issues tackled in this game are accurate to what people my age are going through. I just graduated school going into psychology with a family history in the field and the younger generations have been drawn to suicide by these issues. Look up studies on social media induced anxiety/depression. Different generations go through different issues and this game is mostly accurate in how it depicts trauma and jealousy. This games issues are the boring gameplay and the culture mismatch, but for 2 hours of gameplay its not too big of an issue. For someone who grew up in a time where this kind of mentality is commonplace its a good story.

Everything that happens in Silent Hill is related to 3 things, the town's spiritual power, Alessa's psychic powers, and the cult doings. The reason things happen the way they for in SH2 is because Alessa triggered the nightmare and it still lingering even after she was gone, so its all related, even if people don't care for the cult and the stories of 1,3,4, they directly affect sh2. In other words, they can absolutely come up with new ideas and new characters if the basic principles are uphold. The nightmares gotta be triggered by these combined aspects. If they want a new town to have nightmares, they don't necessarily need Alessa, but they need someone like her to be able to trigger a new nightmare in a new place with spiritual power. The original nightmare was triggered because the cult wanted to birth a demon and everything went to shit, meaning you gotta have someone actively trying to do some occult stuff, and a cult would make sense. But nobody wants to touch that cult because sh2 is the only game without a cult and its "the only good game" so that means cult=bad. There's absolutely thousands of ways to make things work for the future but they have to execute it well and in order for it to make sense in the already established universe, you gotta have those 3 aspects in the story in my humble opinion: spiritual town, person with psychic abilities, and occultism, even if they are not the main characters. Even if we only learn about these through notes and stuff like that. But we have to learn them. Because the universe was well established around Alessa and Silent Hill itself, if we depart from them, we need to know what the hell is going on, even if its vague, subtle and mysterious (Which it should always be subtle, something they haven't been in a while.)

Silent Hill 2 alludes to the towns dark past multiple times so it wasn't forgotten the story just didn't need to emphasis it as the focus was that of a more personal horror. Frankly, I don't much are either way, I'm just trying to suggest that things aren't as etched in stone as you are making them out to be, as there is plenty of room for interpretation. There's a mature, real story that can be made from how such shallow hollow goals and what not can truly be horrible and how to grow out of it, but this just drops any subtelty or tact with which it could have taken the topic. It's made for a "new" audience, and that new audience are, in fact, genuinely people as shallow as the protagonist in this game.

Comment for reupload: This had some good ideas that could’ve worked with silent hill but the bad outweighed any of the good that it all just falls flat. The silent hill phenomenon thing is the worse offender. I think 3,4, and Homecoming do a better job at showing the other world going beyond the town’s boundaries. Thing is, it’s pretty clear in the original games that, while the town itself is like a ground zero, that this other world/supernatural world is just everywhere. It’s something that you can’t understand/rationalize and is at the end of the day, incomprehensible and really shouldn’t be over explained, the horror is the unknown dream logic of it all. It isn’t trauma manifesting itself, but that can shape the way you see this world and how this world interacts with you. Team silent was just lightening in a bottle, I don’t think they’ll ever be able to recapture that. I’m hoping 2 remake and SH f are better but this short experience, and ascension, really put a lot of doubt in my mind about the entire revitalization of the series. I’d rather have remasters/ports of the older games.

The thing with shp - Heather was holding a goddamn SH God in her, that was the reason to transform the world into my grandparents garage, and Waltuh Sallivan was making the ritual to transform room 312 into the damn monster, that turned the whole appartment into the noghtmare, yet it was an alternative reality that was connected in one place - the room. So there always been some kind of wild shit happening that included sh1 cult and gods. Hell, even homecoming was about another town next to it, that had an effect and got that prey/god mentality, that went out of control, since ritual was broken. And now what they are saying that it's okay to shp to happen in anywhere if you see fog all of the sudden and feel sad and guilt for killing wife/friend/brother/tumblr follower

plus, whenever silent hill's otherworld was outside of the actual town, it was to lure people into the town or to physically bring them there in some way. not a whole separate location with its own otherworld spawn that stays within that other location. even Henry was in the actual town through otherworld shenanigans.

I think them keeping the Silent Hill name is annoying, but it's easy to say that this town is just one of many places that are nexuses for energy linking to another universe. SH4 was about Walter using his powers to draw people from all over into his own dream world, Freddy Krueger style, and SH3 and Homecoming had the Otherworld invading locations outside of the town (before you literally enter said town.)

Could easily be connected to these of japanese history in the aftermath of the nuclear bomb drops. If you took that background, and combined it with a place there with some kind of .. I don't know, power. Maybe a different power? And sometime between 1945 and 1970 these two powers meet in silent hill when someone comes to the town. They see their own monsters similar to SH2, but have direct contact with earlier cult members. Clash of powers that leaves and influence in the town's power? Or the cult's beliefs. That's just something off the top of my head. I'm not saying do that. But you COULD come up with something that could logically work somehow even if it's a stretch. I knew Konami was going to do this since they announced their plans to revive the saga, it was obvious that if they want to be relevant again in the industry they had to change the saga to the tastes of the current average gamer and this does not respect the lore of the games they don't know. They only know that Silent Hill was a psychological horror game and that's enough for them to say that any game that has something psychological can be SH, the same thing Capcom did with RE, as long as it has guns and mutants everything is RE. The conditions that allowed Silent Hill to succeed (developers, press and players) do not exist anymore, the developers are not the same, the press is not the same and the players are not the same.

Mayo keeping it real. Thanks for being one of the few silent hill "fans" who demonstrates a very deep understanding about the franchise. I still can't wrap my head around how so many Silent Hill "fans" are criticizing other hardcore fans for being upset with the upcoming Silent Hill offerings (especially the remake). Are people so starved for Silent Hill content that they will gobble up whatever sub-par crap Konami throws their way? And get all upset when fans who KNOW the series deserves way better and have higher expectations get rightfully angry and call them "ungrateful". It's crazy that so many "casual" gamers claim that storytelling and narrative has never been better in videogames and while that is true in some ways, it feels largely inaccurate. True the "cinematic" nature of storytelling in videogames has been refined and that is to be expected with better tech, higher production values, and "copying" off of popular movies and TV shows. But the stories told are just not that engaging. To this day, Silent Hill 2 and 3 run circles around so many of these narrative-focused games. That little section about the fog had my eyes rolling to the back of my head. DID THESE PEOPLE EVER PLAY OR UNDERSTAND SILENT HILL???

I wrote and entire long*** comment on the original video expressing all of my issues with how Konami has treated this franchise and don't intend to rewrite it. Instead I'll keep it short and simple but just saying: Konami, if you want to make a god d*mn Silent Hill game, don't make an action game with an SH paint job or a microtransaction hellscape with a SH paintjob or THIS game which is just Life is Silent Hill, just look at the old games that actually blew this IP up and MAKE THOSE GAMES. It is IMPRESSIVE how incompetent you are when it comes to reading the room and ignoring the existence of RE2 and RE4 Remake as if they haven't been selling like hotcakes. Most people don't even want new Silent Hill games or Remakes, they JUST want modern ports. That's it. And yeah, I know the struggle, "Oh Konami deleted all the old files for the games hurr durr". I don't care, TRY. It'd be much less taxing than whatever the f*** they are doing now. When they can remind the world why people cared about this IP in the first place, THEN they can worry about Remakes and new games. However, they have done this franchise so dirty that most fans would just be content if it STAYED DEAD. And when people would rather a franchise gave them nothing at all than see new games, you've screwed up.

This is why I have repeatedly stated over and over again, Silent Hill died when Konami shut down Team Silent. They were the brain-childs that made the series so unique and haunting. Every developer afterwards for the likes of Homcoming, Origins and Downpour, while I'm sure they had the best of intentions, just failed to match that which was presented in the first four original Team Silent games. Even with Konami's attempts at revitalizing the brand with what we've gotten so far, isn't exactly showing a whole lot of faith and if anything is just further proof of how little understanding they have for this brand. Ascension from what I've heard is really bad, but then again that doesn't surpise me as Jar Jar Abrams Bad Reboot is involved. Short Message doesn't look nor feel in any way remotely anything like Silent Hill, and I wouldn't be surpised if it was meant to be something else entirely and just got the name 'Silent Hill' slapped on in the hopes of selling a couple copies. Bloober Team's Silent Hill 2 Remake has a lot of red flags, certainly not helped that Bloober itself isn't exactly known for their high quaility when it comes to their horror games. Really the only one that I feel could have some interesting potential is Silent Hill ƒ.
