I have lived through the infamous emergency of 1975-77. I was youthful and employed during that period. The police would disperse youngsters standing and chatting in the street corners or chat shops. That was the degree of enforcement during this police raj. Post 1977 election, soon after Janata Government assumed power, the squabbles started. Typically, the disputants would go to JP who, at that time was ailing, and was in Jaslok Hospital. The joke amongst journalists and public was that Indian democracy has three Houses: Loksabha, Rajyasabha and Jaslok Sabha! People of present generation who are interested in knowing of the excesses committed during the infamous Emergency should read Janardhan Thakur's "All the Prime Minister's Men"

At the regional level there is nothing like Tamil Nadu who produced mass leaders -- Annadurai, Karunanithi, MGR and Jayalalitha through the heady combination of film and caste politics (read anti brahminism). Emergency may be a wrong thing ...!!! But it doesn't justify her assassination...!!! She was the leader ...!!! She did not corrupt...!!! She brought so many good things for India...!!! She was doing something good for the humanity...!!! She was strong in her leadership...!!! That two things and being the strong woman leader in the patriarchial international political world was not a favorable ground for her good policies to have been applied...!!! Young political India...!!! National and International Religious lobbies...!!! Her personality and strength no men would have liked to follow...!!! Do not forget Akali had support from Canada...and today's BJP had support from protestant America...!!! What else she could have done in that confused political situation to safe guard her country...??? when the Nuclear world was around her...!!! Using china and Pakistan...??? IF she was alive and had cooperation at least from Indians ...India would have been a strong economy and culture...!!! We would not have been in such an ugly religious and political mess...!!!

Correction: Shankar Sinh Waghela is a funny character in the politics of Gujarat... He was in BJP, INC, formed his own party, NCP (which he left 2-3 days ago...) Now he wants to revive his own party...

Nicely done. You look dapper in that blazer :) We have some of our own anecdotes of that time, but those are not shared outside of family. Couple of suggestions: if possible, go back to history from i) how coming together of Hindus and Muslims in 1857 resulted in Royal takeover of East India Company, ii) how the British then played 'divide and rule' between Hindus and Muslims, iii) how Congress was formed as a consequence, iv) the "Lal-Bal-Pal" years of Congress, v) coming of Mahatma from SA, Champaran Agitation, WW1, to RSS/ML formation in 1925/1930 (both elitist, both popped/backed by British as a continuation of their divide and rule policy, both not really interested in freedom but power for themselves), vi) WW2, Quit India, Provincial Elections from 1936 to 1946 vii) Constituent Assembly, its members and its functions - why RSS/ML were not included, viii) Freedom/Partition/Kashmir, ix) 1947-1964, x) 1964-1975. Big list, I know. I thought people know these things, but shockingly only a handful know. I remember studying books like India Divided, Freedom at Midnight, India Wins Freedom and many many others from school libraries, and bookstalls. Even back then I was the only one in my circle who did that. Not that I missed on any of the fun, socializing or cricket. Right now internet helps fill in some gaps that books didn't cover. Enough about me, but maybe you could teach the kids. You can also do some Digital Marketing, Social Media Marketing of those shows and charge money for watching those shows, before making them free in, say, 6 months. Right now, I want to ask - why China could build Western Highway/Karakoram Expressway in occupied Laddakh/Kashmir, Pakistan could build cities and Mangla Dam (forget just few dwelling like Chinese did in Galwan) in PoK/GB, but why India did nothing about these constructions/changes? Dekha jayega "will see" mindset, or something else? It's gonna be a mix of factors, I'm sure..but please explain it for us. And what can we do now - actually this is what really matters.

Claim : Every prime minister since 1975 except VP SIngh was jailed during the Emergency! Fact : Claim wrong. Manmohan Singh was not jailed during the emergency! Neither was Narendra Modi! Claim : Indira Gandhi set up the university of democracy! Right Wing Bhakt : That's like saying the Twin Towers in New York were built in front of a run way and hence the planes crashed into them!!! You have got to be kidding me with this crap!!!! Claim : The emergency was a "University of democracy"! Right Wing Bhakt : Where do you get this sh**? During emergency - political dissent was banned, the media and print journalism was suppressed, people were jailed without a trial. Every single one of this is a direct insult to the idea of a healthy democracy. If anything, the emergency was a direct attempt to SUPPRESS democracy and rather a move towards an authoritarian state! This is what happens when you spend all day up RaGa's A**!

Shankarsinh Vagela started his political career with the Jana Sangh, which later evolved into the Janata Party. After Janata Party split into various factions, Vaghela became a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In 1996, he broke away from the BJP and formed the Rashtriya Janata Party.Thus during Emergency in 1976 he was part of Jana Sangh and only in 1997 he joined Indian National Congress. You have forgot Vijay Rupani, Chief minister of my home state Gujarat. He was imprisoned for 11 months and was sent to the jails in Bhuj and Bhavnagar during the Emergency in 1976. Above all, Jana Sang and BJP’s tallest leader of Gujarat Chimanbhai Shukla was imprisoned for the maximum term of 19 months. This is not to criticize you but add my favourite leaders in that list. Thank You for reminding Emergency to this new whatsup university students. Nation needs more such articles from a person like you. Thanks.
