Great demo of this Shawn! I have been fiddling with this one as well and I am glad you stressed bringing that tag back up to the center. That seems to really be the key to securing it up. I have been using the mule tape and also tried 750 paracord. It is a great emergency technique to own.

It looks like you're close enough to the ground that if it breaks it won't hurt anything. That might come in handy in a have to case to get a person up off the ground. I never have slept in one, it was always on top of the car or in the trunk or whatever was handy, I never had a tarp or hammock with me.

Thanks for this, I usually use a Wilderness Innovation poncho that is wonderful, and is already designed to be used as a hammock, but it is always good to know how to use a normal (military) poncho in the case of an emergency.

How big are your military ponchos? I bought one that turned out to be 6'x4.5' -- really small. I'm only about 5'9" but I have a hard time making it work as a shelter, and it's definitely too small to string up as a hammock. I'm curious how large the authentic military ponchos are.

I don't recall the exact specs but they're significantly larger than nearly all knockoff counterparts. Am 6ft here, my brother is 5'9" and my surplus poncho housed both of us just fine when we needed to hunker down during the hurricane while in the woods.

Awwww, the basic training bivouac. I remember the shelter half we had to lug. Setting up in the deep forest woods of Ft Leonardwood. In hellish rain. After basic training ..went on to do that a bunch of times for Ranger Training.

A good job of improvising. A poncho is indeed a versatile piece of gear. However, as you stated, using one in this fashion will quickly damage it. Since this application calls for another piece of equipment (the blanket), why not just carry a modern parachute material hammock or a net hammock, and then use the poncho as you did the blanket? Then you can spend as much time as needed in the hammock without ruining the poncho. The 2 types of hammock I have mentioned are extremely light, and strong. It will not take up much more space than the blanket and will not weigh much more.

Interesting use of materials. I’ve greatly underestimated the strength of a milspec poncho. I deff wouldn’t trust it with my weight though. One hard sneeze and I’d be on the ground.

OK so, that poncho you got looks pretty heavy duty. Has a dyneema look and the grommets are actually set right. while watching this video I got on amazon and tried to find something similar. Now that my search has turned up nil, I need to ask who makes it?

Excellent instructional video. 45 years ago, I carried 2 ponchos(they were od in those days). We were taught a few ways to use them as shelters but, if you were on guard, you took down your shelter or got wet. The extra poncho made life in the field alot more comfortable. The ponchos also became improvised stretchers using 2 - 10' long bambo poles. Sometimes, we could scrounge up a jungle hammock but some of the officers would confiscate them(the Bn XO usually). A couple of years later when I made 2LT, I just slept in the back seat of my jeep. BTW those ponchos shed part of their rubber layer so I just keep them for sentimental reasons. We had a number of tricks to better our chances and comfort. One I remember, was to squeeze a dressing and a C rat accessory pack into the first aid pouch. If you could get an extra pouch you put a bandage and C rat pack into it. The little pouch on the side of the canteen got the halizone tablets and a p-38.

Just an old slow-mover looking for comments or suggestions... I've had both knees and a hip replaced, and I've had to gear down a bit, but I still enjoy getting out to pass knowledge onto my grandson. I've had 2 ponchos, liners, and a casualty blanket for years now, invaluable gear. Along the way, I discovered the Hennessy Hammock, but the Explorer Deluxe and the Safari Deluxe are starting to get a little bulky for any distance. Do you have any suggestions for a 265 lb., 6 ft.er that's a bit past his prime, ie. light and small, but will handle a heavier load?

Your videos are sooo clean in production...and great content...you have convinced me to do the speed ridge line set up....I have a list that I made called presence of mind and it has to do with putting your brain into function right at a SHTF situation of any degree....it could be just as lost in urban or wild conditions and one or the items is can you make a quick camp...which I think from location to shelter to fire spot you want 90 minutes...beat the weather or threat situation. That is “smothin’it” like unreal, and I bet you could now throw that set up against the clock in 15 minutes easy (15 on fire pit spot 15 on wood collection 10min. Fire build....if possible then....eat.).... great vid...Dave C is the man. His advice and showing not only how, but what you really just don’t want to be without in a load out....boy, has he not evolved into his ancestor....for our benefit....Great human....
