@@iconicusensign9624 I personally think it was partly to punish Horus for failing, but also to save themselves. It wouldn’t have destroyed them but if enough of their essence was in Horus at the time the blast hit him, it could destroy a significant portion of the god. Not a kill, like taking a arm or leg. Another speculation I’ve seen, and agree with, is that the emperor is actually stronger than any singular chaos god. He couldn’t beat all four, but given that the emperor wasn’t directly pressing them, rather acting as a wildly overpowered dark god, they had no reason to feel threatened enough to join Forces. They were way to focused on the great game, where the likely hood of their death is near 0. Whereas taking on the emperor, at least in the 42nd millennium, in a 1v1 is asking to be deleted. My favorite moment of guillemans return is the emperor lighting his gardens on fire. Nurgle was watching the duel that lead to the emperor possessing guilleman. He knew the emperors presence, and he wanted no smoke. Hiding in his mansion while the emperor declared war on all four of them. I wonder how their going to balance the emperor as time goes on. As he gets more active in his god state now that the great rift exists, he’s likely to do some fucked op shit. I wonder how the chaos gods will answer. How will the emperor beat them one by one, somehow not incurring the full rath of the remainders. I could maybe argue that the emperor could maybe take slannesh and nurgle in a 2v1, but not consistently and not without taking basically fatal damage. Still a game over. He’s gonna have to do some galaxy brain shit to win this one

If you really thing about it most of the emperor's son's would have loved to be the first one to meet their father and the first to be discovered. But what hurts the most is that the main reason why Horus betrayed the emperor is because he felt that his own father couldn't trust him but if only he new that the emperor was trying to protect his favorite son. I believe it is in Master of Mankind when the Emperor best describes foresight: It is like looking across turbulent waters to an island on the other side. You can see the shore but know not how you will reach there. You can see many possibilities, swim across trusting your strength, but could your muscles cramp and fail you; are ther predators in the water that will attack and impede you. If you take a boat, will the boat be flawless, will a storm capsize and sink you, will you accidentally offend the boat maker and they never make the boat. Foresight is seeing the shore within your grasp but never knowing what it will take to reach that shore.

I imagine like he said, The Emperor could see nearly endless future timeline pathways... Likely a future, brought to becoming reality after an infinite series of potentialities. Each future of varying degrees of probability for each of his sons fates, a possible sequence of interconnected strands where every one of them could after any number of specific well telegraphed actions, interacting with seemingly unrelated unpredictable events of happenstance in just such a way they (in just this single unique way all these potentialities may succumb to fate) become Arch-Traiter, inciting civil war. They could all remain loyal, or fall to betrayal... except Lorgar with being landing on Colchis and subsequently sandwiched between The absolute worst-ever Erebus, and the very close second worst Kor Phaeron... In his case the game was rigged from the start, never had a chance...lol So, until it occurs so many futures seem to be all likely as to be true and assured. But how could The Emperor risk preemptively strike at what may fear will come to pass. In him driven by arrogance, fear, and desperation acts upon deeply flawed information, and in turn calculation. Thus finding that precisely which he feared and attempted to negate from occurring, instead has been the very causal agent that set in stone and has ensured that very future's guaranteed existence.

It's not really conceivable that the Emperor had any certainty of Horus' fate. The only legitimate interpretation is that the Emperor saw it as merely one possible timeline, and that the Emperor either felt the risk was worth it (not simply recycling Horus immediately), or that he would ensure that fate did not come to pass. Otherwise the Emperor is one big dumb-E, and that would be heresy.

Makes you wonder how Horus ever thought he stood a chance. I had a question about the Heresy... other then the trickery of that Word Bearer guy why didn't Horus try to return to the Emperor to try and heal him when he was wounded by that chaos blade? Also one thing that really gets me even now is there are many definitions of a god and all have different levels of power attached. Lorgar seemed to think he was THE "God" and reasonably he doesn't fit that... but he does fit the lower term of "god" which really just means a very very powerful being (which he was for sure). But it seems the lore likes to play loose with what each son really means when they use the term and it sort of bugs me.
