@@BlandoTaco The video says the deuterium is the the core of the tip. Makes no damn sense. Writers obviously thought that as the US military uses depleted uranium cores in tank ammunition, people in the future would use nuclear fusion material in their ammo I.e. deuterium. Makes no damn sense though. Deuterium is still very light (second lightest atom that exists after hydrogen) and the "depleted" product of deuterium fusion would be some helium isotope which still is very very light. No armor penetration whatsoever. Might give the victim some mild dose of radiation at worst.

I'm glad you didn't exaggerate on the size of the bolts themselves - I've encountered far too many people suggesting that they're similar to a 40mm grenade, when the closest approximation would be a 12 gauge slug; a 12 gauge slug that is akin to a mini-rocket that explodes, fired in bursts... lol

I.G = near inexhaustible, unrelenting, unstoppable, powerhouse of a warmachine 100% totally dedicated to nothing else but war. With the man/machine power and mightiest weapons and near infinite supply of new recruits/resources of the entire Imperium of Man at their disposal. S.M shocktroopers by design made for heavy hitting lightning fast hit and run warfare, deep within enemy territories for extended periods of time with minimal support and lack of regular resupplys. Makes complete sense right, my own genius never ceases to amaze me, honestly were would the Imperium be without me.

@Watchmasterofkrieg Thats not Gabriel Angelos, thats George Washington. And it was not a gun, it was originally "stick", as in a walking stick many people used at the time. In wilder areas it would be a stick that helps you climb a cliff, in Europe, a gentlemans cane. Both deadly weapons if used correctly, but neither sounds as stupid as calling it walking softly while toting a gun. It means never start a fight, never threaten anyone, but if you do get dragged into a fight, be prepared to end it.

bolt shells work in two stages, the casing carries and initial kick charge which ejects the bolt out of the barrel and ignites the rocket propellant outside of the bolt weapon, so it'd be more like firing a shotgun slug, except the slug has a rocket attached to it...and explodes... Also rocket launchers tend to have little recoil because they direct a lot of the thrust from the rocket backwards to neutralize the force from the rocket shooting forward

3:40 One of the most interesting aspects of 40K is the intermingling of religion into every aspect of Imperial life, down to seeing their guns as religious objects. The religion GW has created is infinitely interesting and fitting for the setting, and makes the world of 40K more believable and very unique compared to other sci-fi worlds.

Look at the Jedi in Star Wars. It makes FAR less sense for them to be using lightsabers. All of their enemies are just normal humanoids or robots. In 40K the sword is often more useful than the gun if you understand anything about the enemies they're fighting. If you understand 40K lore, then yes, it's quite believable. As for your ignorant comment on how people treat guns IRL, you have a clear and fundamental lack of understanding as to why people support gun ownership.
@majorearl12
@majorearl12 6 жыл бұрын
Well, seeing as the lightsaber allows Jedi and Sith to block and deflect the blasters being shot at them, and with their force-enhanced speed, they can use it to a HUGE advantage in combat. Its why i prefer the old Legends and how it explains lightsabers coming about as well as why there still is CQC in Star Wars. Then again in WH40k, its the same way, their fighting and warfare has evolved differently than the real world. Even nowadays, you still have a bayonet or a knife cause a pistol or assault rifle isnt gonna do it when you are in a house and the enemy just suprise attacked you around the corner. Plus when you are a walking tank that was made with enhanced strength and whatnot, then you use your assets to your advantage.

Religion is a crucial tool for cementing a civilization together. It provides guidance, support, and punishment in one institution. It is also easier to instruct the masses of unknown commoners that slave away to support the empire if you indoctrinate them and embed the foundations of their knowledge in catechisms they repeat by faith - indeed you should look into the quotations attributed to the Adeptus Mechanicus for highly relevant and contextually specific examples, but you can extrapolate that all branches of the Imperium have their own varieties of faith tuned to their specific missions, but inline with overall doctrine.

Deuterium is a hydrogen isotope, containing a neutron. I don't think it being depleted would make it return to base hydrogen. Depleted uranium 238 doesnt really stop being what it is. That being said, I am no physicist and I don't think anyone would really answer that question. After all, how would you deplete something so light? Also, there rapid fire are grenade launchers that shoot similar to a bolter. The difference seems to be no onboard propellent after initial ejection.

@@deven6518 "Depleted" uranium has had the isotope useful for nuclear fission mostly removed. It is used in munitions for its high density (improved penetration) and ability to inflict lasting environmental devastation upon the countries America destroys for Israel. @Tippetts6618
@Tippetts6618 4 жыл бұрын
Deuterium has been forged into a liquid metal using lasers and also can be forged under high pressure. Jupiter is thought to have high amounts of liquid metallic hydrogen in its dense atmosphere. Deuterium has potentially also been forged into a soild metal after being subject to even more incredibly high pressure using the space between two diamonds to squeeze it. Jury is still out on that one though. Scientists have been trying to create metallic hydrogen for sometime so who knows what we will discover maybe it is possible. Either way with it being theorized in this universe I am happy to believe it can exist in another that has 40,000 years of advancement on our own, I just try not to think of them as being "heavy water" rounds lol
@MayonnaiseVenusaur
@MayonnaiseVenusaur 4 жыл бұрын
@@Tippetts6618 as far as we know, metallic hydrogen isn't very dense. It is at least less dense than lead.
@Tippetts6618
@Tippetts6618 4 жыл бұрын
@@MayonnaiseVenusaur perhaps it has less to do with density. Sure depleted uranium rounds, which is the comparison here, take advantage of the higher density of DU to be effective at penetrating armour however so can a small thin disc of copper with an explosive charge also be effective at armour penetration, the Taliban sure made it work. Obviously the copper plate has limitations depending on its scale. I chose copper as an example because it is almost half the density of depleted uranium and less dense than lead which you mentioned. An APFSDS round that a tank fires is a dart like munition and can be made of depleted uranium or more typically a tungsten rod. It flies towards a target at something like two kilometres per second and upon hitting the target with such speed it burns it's way through armour. By the time it reaches the other side it will either be pieces of super heated metal that ignite other munitions inside the vehicle, kill/ injure crew, damage components and very likely de-pressurise the tank turning crew to jam (this is why tank hatches pop open sometimes when hit) or it may go in one side and out the other doing some or none of the things above. Look at the effectiveness of American and British tanks during the Iraq war. Anyway now that context for this bit is out the way back to the point. it is believed metallic hydrogen would potentially be unstable and revert back to a liquid metal state when pressure is again exerted upon on it so "core" may refer to an encased liquid state deuterium and so maybe a metallic deuterium isn't even relevant. If it is metallic perhaps when the pressure exerted upon the deuterium round upon being fired reverts it back to a metallic liquid, then the energy gathered in flight turns the depleted deuterium into a hot globular of burning metal when it impacts on its target, something akin to a more dense and super heated paintball. Alternatively perhaps it remains a soild metal when leaving the weapon and the pressure during flight or on impact reverts it back to liquid metal basically working in the same way as today's APFSDS rounds do. We know that the ammunition used is also an explosive round and depleted deuterium is unlikely to explode, even if it was a thing so the ammunition is probably something akin to a mix between how an APFSDS and HESH (high explosive squash head) round works. A malleable metallic head with an explosive charge behind. Basically how the Tailban's copper discs work except less penetrative. A HESH rounds squash head part flattens on a surface it impacts on and the explosive force of the charge behind transfers energy through the armour plate and causes a hot piece of "scab like" metal to break off inside a tank which can injure/ kill, damage components or ignite other munitions inside a vehicle, very different to how the APFSDS or the copper disc works. Maybe the bolter rounds then have a depleted deuterium core (liquid or metal) encased behind an explosive head. The explosive head cracks open the armour and the deuterium core, either liquid or solid, follows through the opening and penetrates the target negating any need for the deuterium to have a relatively high density to other materials because it only needs to penetrate the flesh of a target which is pretty malleable. Space marine armour is made of a material called ceramite which is fictional, kind of like depleted deuterium is in fact lol. The nature of ceramite is described on the warhammer wiki as follows: "Unlike metal, Ceramite doesn’t rupture or dent on impact and it takes a projectile of considerable power and high calibre to break through it." It also mentions it doesn't conduct heat so las-weapons are ineffective against it, although all armour is penetrated by a combination of energies be it speed, thermal, pressure etc. A not so dense substance even super heated is probably not gonna burn though this then. Boltguns can be effective against ceramite as seen in the universe of 40k so maybe it is the explosive head of a bolter round that is the effective part vs the armour and depleted deuterium cores job is just for killing the target even if it is a slither of super heated liquid metal that does this. It makes sense for a people who live in a state of constant war to have a good supply of materials to create ammunition and considering deuterium is an isotope of hydrogen, and I think given their advancements they are probably pretty good at manufacturing this, they have a bloody good supply. Although obviously heavy water has other uses...

So if we took into account that most likely muzzle velocity of a bolt is around 600-800 mps with a max velocity possibly reaching 1200-1500 mps, now that's a fearsome 'individual' carried weapon.

I remember when bolts were specifically stated as being "caseless". I wonder what came first, the official fiction deciding that they weren't because of reasons, or it just being retconned after not a single nerdy artist seems to know what caseless means. Speaking of artists, while that Imperial fist is pretty bad ass looking, take a gander at the side of that case (from the caseless ammunition he's firing) compared to the magazine in which it was moments before stored. Ha. At least this bolter has a barrel. A lot of artists are so clueless to how weapons work they put the magazine right, and I mean RIGHT, behind the muzzle. This is especially true of bolt pistols. Yep folks, .75 caseless rocket rounds with a 0.1" barrel. For what it's worth, my guess is the original writers didn't know what "caseless" meant either, probably heard it talked about with the HK experiments at the time, heard Hicks say it in Aliens and just figured it was a cool sci-fi thing to claim about your weapons.

This is just a big, sophisticated bullet. We have armor piercing delayed fused munitions today. Russian and German snipers hunted each other using explosive bullets. You can certainly make the claim that the advance in technology brought with it better bits and pieces but at the end if the day this is all pretty mundane stuff. It’s cool shit. It’s great for “soft” targets (low armor high flesh). I just cannot help but think many ardent fans if the universe don’t really understand what Bolters are.

Of all the personal in 40K (other than autoguns, perhaps) it's interesting that boltguns are perhaps the most feasible with current day technology. Making a functioning boltgun even in M3 would be relatively straightforward--just take a Gyrojet-style cartridge, seat it in a shortened .50 BMG (or bigger, if you like) cartridge casing with a bit of propellant to give it an initial velocity of say, 300 m/s (or whatever would give it enough oomph to not bounce off the target at the muzzle), and Bob's your uncle. Fuzing the rounds to explode _inside_ targets would be a bit harder, though, but could perhaps be accomplished with some sort of delayed fuze that will have the added benefit of destroying the round after it has travelled a certain distance, effectively making for a projectile that has less risk of collateral damage than real-world bullets. (Even .22 LR bullets can be dangerous past half a mile.) The reason no one has done this is that there is really no demand for it whatsoever. Ironically, by real-world standards, the humble Lasgun of the Imperial Guardsman is a *far* more impressive weapon. Imagine a "rifle" that can hit with the force of at least a .308* out to 300m with pinpoint accuracy, no projectile travel time or drop, can fire hundreds of shots per magazine, is durable enough to be used as a club, and which has ammo that can be recharged just by leaving it in the sun or even chucking it into a campfire? And in a package that weighs no more than 4 kg? If I could have any weapon in the 40K universe, I'd choose a Lasgun or a Laspistol over the bolter, especially since a Lasgun wouldn't be considered a "firearm" by any country's laws, and thus would be legal for possession anywhere on Terra in M3. *Considering that in some sources, Lasguns are described as severing limbs on humans with a single hit, and Laspistols can kill adult Orks with headshots, I'd surmise that Lasguns and Laspistols are more powerful than full-power .30 caliber rifle rounds. They only seem "weak" in 40K because everything else is so OP. Against human (or humanoid) targets including Eldar, Lasguns are absolutely deadly.

Except that it would never work. There is a reason why we don't have gyrojets today. The instability in flight problems alone mean that MAYBE you could build such a round, but you'd never be able to hit anything with it. Moreover, whatever velocity you could achieve with a gyrojet can be far, far, far exceeded by a normal "bullet with propellant" model. Basic physics: let's say we have a cartridge of 100g. In a "bolter", I would have say 20g of propellant to kick out the 80g of "bolt", which consists of 50g of "fuel", 10g case, an 20g "warhead". That initial 20g propellant has to push 80g out the muzzle, so it's got a REALLY crappy propellant/mass ratio of 1:4. Then the 50g of fuel has to push (on average) 10+20+25g of mass downrange, at a 50:55 ratio of propellant to average mass. If, instead, I just use a propellant+bullet model, that leaves me 80g of propellant pushing a 20g bullet. So, I get a 4:1 propellant to mass ratio. That's over FOUR TIMES the velocity that my "bolter" can achieve under the best conditions. The closest thing we have to a bolter is several of the tank cannons that launch missiles (such as the US's Copperhead round for the M109 howitzer: (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M712_Copperhead). They work for two reasons: (1) they're big enough to include missile steering surfaces with a flight stabilization control system, and (2) they're not kinetic weapons in any way - they're HEAT rounds and the reason they exist is pure RANGE, not speed or destructive ability over something like a normal HEAT or Kinetic APFSDS round. In fact, the Copperhead (and similar weapons) are decidedly inferior to a standard HEAT round in direct fire mode, and depend on top-attack methods to avoid having to penetrate the heavy vertical protection armors of their targets. A Copperhead had roughly half the explosive power as a standard HEAT round for the same gun, despite weighing almost 40% more in total. Gyrojets are cool, but completely impractical, and, worse, LESS effective than what we use now.

@@eriktrimble8784 Note that i stated that there isn't any demand for a weapon like that--and with good reason. Nowhere did I state that making a replica bolter in the real world would be a _practical_ weapon, just that it is possible to make something that would function like a bolter. I stated that something like the Lasgun would make a much more desirable and practical weapon in the real world. As far as I can tell, bolter shells function similar to rocket-assisted projectiles for artillery, except drastically scaled down. The fact that no one has tried making something like this does validate your point that it wouldn't work, although I wouldn't say that it is impossible. (It just would work so badly as to make it not worth the effort except as a hobby project.) Nowhere did I state that a real-world boltgun or a Gyrojet is more effective than conventional firearms. The fact that no one has tried reviving the MBAssociates Gyrojet designs in the past 60 years is evidence enough that even with our advantages in precision machining and CNC, the concept is really just a curiosity at best and not a practical weapon system. The only use I could see for a Gyrojet would be for some sort of underwater firearm with a supercavitating projectile, but even then, that is an extremely limited and niche application.

You should remark that a bolter round is a 0.75 cal shell which roughly equates to a 19.05 mm bullet and would deliver ~44.000 joules of energy at the tip of the cannon. Most of the picturing of the weapon doesn't fit the real diameter of the cannons. This calculations are based of current technology of the fire weapons; a single bolt shell would produce roughly the same kinetic energy as 30 rounds of 5.56 mm bullets fired from a regular sized assault rifle (as the HK G36).

The ammunition has extra propellant moving the projectile faster than any bullet used today. Great Video as always Leutin! Though here are my thoughts I wanted to add as a big fan of the 40k RPG's. There are tonnes of humanized versions of the Boltgun, I'm glad that in Fantasy Flight Games and Black Industries who go into detail in Dark Heresy, Deathwatch, Rogue Trader, Only War and Black Crusade that Astartes weapons are if not braced will simply rip apart the weapon's hands. Also their scale goes up by one, so a Basic Boltgun becomes a Humanized Heavy Bolter in size, a Astartes Bolt Pistol, becomes a Humanized Boltgun basic weapon and so on. Also to add to this, they add a penalty to shoot effectively with these weapons, but it does state that Humans with good skill CAN use Space Marine Bolt weapons. Also I like to bring up that all Imperial Factions, including powerful Civilian factions and houses use Boltguns just as much as the Astartes, but obviously of a Human sized versions using a Standard .75 Sized round, while the Astartes version is a standard .95 sized round. Also boltguns no matter their size variations can have upgrades from Fire Selectors (Multi clips for different rounds), Motion Predictors, Omni Scopes (All purpose scopes for range, heat vision, night vision), Blessed variations to dealing with Warp Entities, Weapon lock systems from basic key pins all the way to Arcane/Gene Lock systems. Tempest Bolt shells allow the user to shock their enemies against armoured targets but also do additional damage against machines. One of my favourite types of nobility bolt weapons is the Bolter cane, containing a single round within a modified cane stick which can be used with any type of ammunition though obviously with one round. Also you can make micro versions of any bolt weapon, even having pistols hiding inside concealed cavities for bounty hunters or mercenaries in the outer territories. Just wanted to add this to your video for some interesting aspects from outside the Astartes. :)

I absolutely love this little factoid; The bolter ammo is described as getting a can of monster fired into your chest cavity at terminal speed... yet it is 5.56 cartridges that continously eject from the boltguns. Now, I understand this is all made up, but that always bothered me xD

So from what you're telling me a bolter is kinda like a 12 guage shotgun magizine feed and firing explosive slugs. 12 guage is .73 caliber while a bolter is .75 caliber. The bulky appearances I'd guess it would weigh 30 lbs roughly which the weight of the gun helps with recoil. I wouldn't see how recoil would be a problem to the guard however lugging it around could be exhausting. In the end it is a work of fiction so maybe comparing real life comparisons is inadequate or either futile.

If say, an Astates' heavy bolter can also be a pintle mounted weapon on say, a Chimera AFV, wouldn't the weapons be the same pattern, or as near as damn it. The ammunition should be interchangeable; what's the difference in a bolt cartridge from an Astartes' heavy bolter and an Imperial Guard heavy bolter? I'm thinking that you can't get in trouble for have Astartes' ammunition if it's the same round. How would an Imperial Guardsperson even get an Astartes' round?
