Fascinating stuff! The point about how Milt Caniff and Walt Kelly and such were millionaires is very eye-opening, but also if you look at old comics in general, there are a ton of artists who never made it big. Some were great but just unlucky; others were crummy & deserve to be forgotten. Just noting this because Stephen admits his speech gets depressing at parts: comparing yourself only to the biggest winners is bound to depress you! So it's important for young aspiring artists to remember that, even in eras that appear like a golden age, the landscape always had few hits & very many misses. And when you look at all those people who never made it big & couldn't even distribute their work like a modern online indie artist, it makes you appreciate our current resources all the more! Very valuable for keeping one's spirits up.

I recently did a podcast with Davey Jarrell updating this topic. I added a second podcast where after I trace cartooning back to the 1400s, I start in China around 1100 and trace it back through Japanese culture to modern anime. The parallels are amazing. The two podcasts should be up for Animation Resources members early this year.
