I have a friend who's father was a Veterinarian. One night when one of her daughter's horses was deathly sick, she guided her adult daughter through the process. Younger people try harder and longer as hindsight is 20/20 and she was learning. My friend quoted her Veterinarian Dad saying "when you take on the responsibility for the life of an animal, you take on the responsibility for it's death." It was apparent that night that she was guiding her daughter to make the choice for 'her' horse. She ended up giving her horse the 'Last Act of Kindness' and it was necessary. It's the hardest decision we have to make in our life.❤️

Regardless of the type of animal, quality of life is still important. No “slack” should be applied to anyone. It was a tough decision, Tyler did what could be done for the calf, and he made the tough decision based on the information that he had. My condolences for the calf, but it was the correct choice. These are decisions that farmers/ranchers have to make for their animals. Sometimes, the results are positive, but often the results aren’t what we had hoped for and we end up losing an animal. It is disappointing, but nothing in life is ever guaranteed. Thank you, Tyler…appreciated the update.

FTR - No apology is needed as far as I'm concerned. For crying out loud - at the end of the day these are farm animals being raised for food. You treat your animals very well, with kindness and compassion. You obviously love the work you do and work very hard and give it your all! But real life --- which so many are now shielded from and have no idea even what it is --- is often cruel, unfair, and filled with tough decisions. I remember the sage but tough advice my vet gave me about a problem dog I had. If you can't help the dog DON'T surrender him to a no-kill shelter. He said there is no such thing... they just pass off their hopeless cases to a kill shelter. You did everything you possibly could to help him!

I rescued all my life, mostly dogs, also cats, birds, etc...the wild native ones went to a wildlife rehabber, anyone who does this knows that there are going to be some you just can't save! You just bent over backwards to help this poor baby, but he just never really had a chance, too many birth defects. Blind horses, and dogs, walk around just fine, so he must have had other mobility issues, and I have a little older dog who is blind, doesn't bother her a bit, runs all over, and her sense of smell is terrific. Absolutely you made the right decisions here! Don't worry about it, you do a great job!!

It's the hardest job on a farm. I know that many others will not understand how farmers/ranchers can love their animals but still euthanize them. You tried your best and gave him a chance and that was more than what nature would have done for him. He lived 2 months longer because you tried. And that is a good thing! If you wouldn't have tried you never would have known if he had a chance or not. Hard decision, and I know that first hand. Keep being a good rancher.

I would have to agree with your conclusion in every respect Tyler. Especially on a small family farm that has to generate income to survive. Any animal that demands an inordinate amount of time to care for and too many resources cannot be justified. The viewers knee jerk reaction to a less than desirable outcome really can't factor into the practicalities of running your farm. Sure it's sad but you are the executive in charge of your operation and the weight of those decisions doesn't rest on the viewers shoulders, it all lands on yours.

All of us regular watchers know how gentle and loving and caring you are for your animals. Feel good about yourself. I can't help feeling that that particular baby cow is thanking you for your compassion knowing my life as a cow sucks, I'll never produce or reproduce and I was born sick. Thanks for helping me by ending my tough life , it was tough to see, stand, eat, communicate and everything else a good cow should be , so again, I the sick, cow thank you for doing me right. I 110% support you and your decision. I was recently in a similar situation with a dairy cow I took in with neglect issues. After doing everything I could, I had to make the same hard decision. It literally comes down to quality of life. We can only do our best, in some situations throw the kitchen sink at them (treatment and/or time) and when that doesn't work make the hard decisions. You did what you had to do for the calf. Prolonging life sometimes is just cruel. Could you have kept him alive? I absolutely say yes, at least for a while until his body gave out. Would it have been the best for him? No. Not even a little. You very obviously made the right call, as bad as it sucks. I wish we could save them all but there's this thing called "reality"...

Tyler, I can tell you that you did the right thing & know how hard that was. I recently faced the same situation and it tears me apart having to do these things. I had a little calf who couldn't walk and I found her struggling to get up, wet and cold. We wrapped her in blankets and got her warm and had to tube feed her as she had no desire to nurse. Spent over a week going out 5 times a day putting her on her feet and making her walk but in the end the most she could do on her own was stand jerking back and forth before falling. She also never developed a desire to nurse so several times a day it was tube feeding. Yes, it was a difficult thing to do but the right thing & still hurts.

id say this. if the poor thing didn't attach to another calf to move with the heard and "keep up" essentially, then, he didnt have the will to live. and at that point, what you chose to do was the best choice. I know this was hard for you, bc you chose to explain yourself and almost seem to be beating yourself up for it, but know, you did the right thing. Some farmers on KZbin would have just said "oh, I found him dead in the pasture, must have gotten kicked or something". But you didn't, you were honest about what was going on. You let everyone in on the thought process to get to the decisions you made. I applaud that, you didn't shy away and make an "easy" video. Many farmers would have gone the easy route. You made the best decision you could with the situation and information that you had. I lived on a farm for many years, you do what you have to do for the long term health of the farm. To be honest, my grandfather would have take the calf to the processor and had him made into ground beef or jerky. As you said you simply cannot see everything that’s going on in the few seconds to a few minutes in a video. I have always believed in doing what’s best for the animal must come first. Whether that animal is a beloved dog in pain with cancer to this calf. I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU. It’s very difficult 😞 by necessary in having healthy livestock. The idea that surviving is more important than living has definitely caused a lot of mistaken opinions. I know of a person who choose to continue on life support because agreeing to allow the doctor to decide is thought to be suicide. This calf needed help and you went above and beyond to give it to him. This was an act of love, it required time, resources and a lot of heart but you gave it. And then only with the love you heard the verdict given by a vet and took the calf the rest of the way on that journey. In my book - you are a hero and a good man. Let it go, you have done all that could be done and done it well.

My husband and I have a very small family ranch. Only 13 head. 3 new babies this week. All have names and are treated like part of the family. We enjoy it; even the sad days. As with you, our cattle have the very best life possible and could get no better care or attention. You did as much as we would have done and probably saved the little guy from a lot of future harm and pain. He had the best life possible. Chin up....We were happy to see you care so much.........We enjoy your videos so much. You always explain everything, even if it seems simple. That is how we learn. Without a doubt you did the right thing with the disabled calf. I spent my younger years growing up on my parents' and grandparents' farms in Kansas and losing an animal for any reason is painful. Ignore those who have and will write negative comments. You said it well when you talked about you living the experience that no one watching an edited vlog could possibly know.
