California politicians and the media claimed freelancers were being abused.
Their solution: a new law, AB5, that reclassified millions of them as staff employees-whether they liked it or not.
Politicians claimed businesses would now be forced to pay them, “wages and benefits that they deserve.”
“In reality, what's actually happening is they’re just letting them all go,” said freelance musician Ari Herstand.

I am honestly doing very well as a freelancer while being a single mother, and am able to fully support my young daughter on my own. Freelance has given me so much freedom. I am absolutely TERRIFIED of this law! This law has the potential to make it next to impossible for many Americans to even have a job! We, the People, should have the right to CHOOSE! The problem is that if a majority want something that the minority doesn’t, it is seen as bad. With that said, politicians , both dems and republicans, also don’t talk to people on both sides often enough to see where they should make adjustments to accommodate both sides. The law that California made should have had some experts weighing in on what jobs should have been included and excluded from it. Ride shares do screw over employees more than any other gig jobs. I'm a sole proprietor, truck driver. I own my own truck truck and lease onto a larger trucking company. We are force dispatched as in if you don't take this load someone else will and you can sit at home. The contract changes constantly and so does the equipment and if you don't like it find somewhere else to work. No insurance, no 401k. Any damages to the loaf come our of my pocket and the same with truck repairs and no employee right so they can fire for no reason. The reason I keep this job is because it is semi local and pays more then most in my area but still not enough to cover the difference in all the aforementioned issues

I worked as a contractor for 7.5 years for a large delivery company. I didn't have benefits, but I had flexibility. And I made good money because I was being paid what they would've had to pay for the benefits. That ended on December 31 when they dumped all their contractors. Fortunately I'm retired, but many of my colleagues are still looking for jobs. There's nothing worse than a politician who helps you to death...while they make their money from the state and lobbyists. No wonder they won't talk to you; you might actually ask them a question.

1998 UK Labour Government passed a similar law concerning building contractors. 1999 they did the same thing to IT workers - I left the country and never paid another cent of taxes to the UK. I was a music education independent contractor for public elementary schools for eight years in CA. The law changed, and my degree no longer qualified to work in the classrooms that I had cultivated for almost a decade. I had to spend 10k to open up my own music teaching studio, which at least was less than going back to get the education I would’ve needed to continue the work that I had already been doing. When I left the system, so many teachers and families were upset, and even blamed me! It was really heartbreaking. They don't want people to be able to deduct expenses that's what it boils down to. As an independent contractor if you gross $1,000 and you spend $900 to gross that 1k and you only have $100 in taxable wages that's what the government is trying to stop my friends plain and simple

True. I knew an independent trucker who grossed around $125,000 a year but could write off $100,000 for business expenses since he was always on the road. That was a while ago so the amounts have gone up.

Not the "very rich" If they can get $5000 in deductions disqualified on 50 million of those type of people's returns, they net a heck of a lot more money than if they go after 100,000 people who make 10Million in income a year and get 50k each. The very wealthy use smart accounting firms and can spend money contesting an audit. Someone who makes 125k will just pay up

So many people work as freelancers or "for hire." I really don't understand why people think being one needs to be an employee.
