No one cares about what you are saying or the legality of it, just saying, literally no one. The code can be found on github. People have been reverse engineering half life and 1.6 since these games came out, stop making bs up. How do you think coders and engineers go so deep into checking demos for cheating players in KZ? Know exactly what is going on when each bug happens? BY KNOWING THE CODE. Get a grip.

I hope GoldSrc never ends, the movement is too unique and elaborate. However, it could at least all be ported to Source Engine like KZMod, which is basically all GoldSrc mechanics running inside Source Engine, with all Source graphics, resources, maps, etc, but with GoldSrc movement. The best of both worlds. KZ, autobhop, surf, everything feels just so different in it, especially the powerful air acceleration, and crouch mechanics, it's just in a league of its own.

Goldsrc games are timeless. The community will keep it alive for many years to go. The engine is priceless, from Half-Life mods, Counter-Strike 1.6 custom maps, community made skins, you name it. The engine still has a lot to offer and we have seen most of it for the past 20+ years and it hasn't feel redundant at all.

There is also another aspect other than making maps and mods for Goldsrc. Making "Machinimas" - animated in-game films made using the game engine. It later became more popular with Source engine and release of SFM. But Half-Life 1 is getting popular again lately. Most of new machinimas or nowadays more used form of videos - Memes, are made using SFM or Blender, but they rarely achieve the same look and feel as making it in the original engine.

Cry of Fear did a good job. At the time plenty of indie survival horror games were mostly done on unity. Someone doing a more fun game with older tools was deserving of its praise.

9:00 Speaking of Afraid Of Monsters, it's good to know that there exists TWO versions of the mod: the older OG version shown here on the video, which is pretty much "just a HL reskin", and the VASTLY improved and expanded "Director's Cut", that packs way more custom models, textures, animations and some neat new features, such as flashlight needing batteries. The DC version is pretty much the bridge between the AoM and CoF.

I always loved Gold Source more than Source just because I feel like modders really try going above and beyond with HL1 more (Not knocking on Source modders they do the same there too). It feels a little clickbaity to say it's "the end of goldsrc". Technical limitations are one thing but creative limitations don't exist. As long as there's at least one person out there that has an idea, and they want GoldSrc to be the medium that gives life to that idea, then the end isn't anywhere in sight.

One mod that I feel is missing here, especially in the last category of "pushing visuals" should be "Earth's Special Forces", which is a HL1 Mod that looks, at this point, looks closer to a Source Mod than GoldScr. They are apparently now moving to make it a Sven-Coop mod after the 25th Anniversary Update and the original GoldScr having a 2GB Memory limit they could just not get beyond, while Sven-Coop would allow 4GB which is plenty for them. Still, given that Sven-Coop is still technically a GoldScr game, I say it counts.

@@ryancool1416 The original dust2 was made because Dave Johnston wanted to make a sequel to the original. The original map "de_dust" was inspired by early screenshots of TF2. There is no connection to a real-life event. It's just Valve's style choice when they remade the map for CS:GO and stuck with that theme for CS2.

1. Your right its old. Everything will get old. Doesnt mean you can make wonderful stuff on it. Look at total chaos. Its in the doom engine which is older than gold source *and* total chaos still looks really good. 2. Gold source's jank has that kind of charm that many people (including me) like. 3. there isn't much like goldsrc and source in terms of ease of use for making mods and whole games, i think goldsrc has a long way to go still. the important thing is to preserve its culture and continue getting people into half-life. the beauty of modding isn't that it has to get better and better, but because all works are so fun and unique.

Another thing I did not see is a mod that turns HL1 (goldsource) from a FPS to something completly diffrent. Like I remmber playing a HL2 RPG game (think elder schrool oblivion it was supper early into devlopment whit just the basic proff of conspet in). it had magic it had levels, it had kill rats get XP, it had quests get XP and rewards, it had item whit stat that did things. not sure if I seen any of that for HL1 thought.

Has anyone ever modded GoldSrc with cells instead of seperate areas behind loading screens? What I mean is similar to Bethesda of how they load in new areas in their games, like seamesless loading of new areas that are close to the player in a way that makes the traditional loadings obsolete. That way you could have enormous maps that never ends, including figuring out a way to also add LOD models (low quaility landscape objects that only apear far away and to be replaced by cell environments when the player gets closer). Anyhow, a modder probably needs the source code for GoldSrc for that, like Sven co-op got for instance.

If you wanna see what can possible be done with GldSrc, look at footage from "Earth Special Forces: Final" (FYI honestly mandatory warning: The final version has been in development since 2005 and it is STILL in development ... yeah). Almost no map size limits, dynamic weather, custom vfx and animation systems, etc. No it does not use Source Engine, though they did consider switching for Final back when HL2 released, but decided against it. And yes they had to write their own custom tools to handle their changes to the engine. Hopefully those tool also get released once the game actually releases. Someday surely.

There's much more ambitious GoldSrc total conversion mods than those shown in this video. How about HL: Rally or BuzzyBots, where you play as rally cars and armed robots, respectively? Then there's International Online Soccer, Kanonball, and a bunch of others I can't remember the names of right now.

Literally only came to say GoldSrc will NEVER die. For everyone in the comments, you can find many iterations of GoldSrc source code online in multiple locations. For example, the source code for OpFor and HL are slightly different. Xash3D is also an open source 1-to-1 recreation, and now is more advanced than the original.
