On June 1st, 2021, twitch streamer 'wayneradiotv' was linked to a workshop page for a newly uploaded mod for Half-Life: Alyx. A mod that would "breathe life" into Gnome Chompski. He installed it, hoping to make the stream of his "gnome run" more interesting. He was not aware of the myth, but that didn't matter anymore. The following footage is documentation of the "Gnome Edition's" existence and what its discovery unleashed into the world.

well! with this! it's finally done. The Half-Life: Alyx Gnome Saga finally comes to an end. Bittersweet, in a way, but we're here. With this series complete, the way is clear. OTHER STUFF can happen now. Wow. We've had multiple projects with MASSIVE amounts of work put into them ready for action since like, 2021. So. Expect something in the nearish future. I also don't feel like the sudden emotional flip of Wayne caring about the gnome was earned, given the gnome was treated as a nuisance for such a long time, but even if that broke a bit of immersion I still am floored by how inventive the whole series and ending is. Like, even if it isn't emotionally resonant with me, it's still damn good.

Fairly certain,@@ahcangela8549! It's only in this episode that it really feels like there was a doubling down on calling him 'my gnome' and the like. I could see how the Blue Gnome saga also might be a place to radicalize the two of them against the Blue one, too. Otherwise, though, a lot of it landed as 'Wayne has to put up with this absurd gnome entity'. There was always an undercurrent of contempt with moments where the absurdism cracked at that and moments where the gnome being TOO AWARE disturbed it.

@@varsoonhks3211 my bond w/ him was a complex one. it wasn’t just for the sake of a lategame plot beat, it was a culmination of long term emotions; yes, he absolutely was a nuisance, but a damn cute one. taking care of him for so long, as irreverent as he may have been, i absolutely grew genuinely attached to him even if I was slamming him into TV’s for laughs. and then there’s the meta element of it, my feelings towards him are directly intertwined with my conflicting feelings towards this series, the mixture of leaving it for so long, coming to dread its mention, at one point barely being able to look at it, and the joy it brought me, my friends, the fans. the pride I took in it. ultimately, despite everything, I loved making this, and I loved the gnome. someone might call it stockholm syndrome. but those are my feelings!

I think that does give a lot more punch to the sense of wanting to see things to their end and the lived connection along the way. That's really cool! That final commentary node monologue was bone-chilling. It’s insane to me that the Gabe Newell AI had such incredible line delivery on that - the sheer dread in its voice when it tries to warn Wayne is palpable. I have no idea how anyone managed to train it to do that

@@eltiolavara9 The Gabe voice was Elevenlabs AI trained on his commentary tracks. Having used Elevenlabs in the past, it tends to generate random but vaguely plausible inflections for each sentence, so the inflection on that line was about 50% good AI training and 50% sheer luck.

You cannot imagine the raw emotion that this ending inspired in the people who watched it live. The creeping dread, the palpable relief when we thought we had been faked out, how hilarious it was... and then right back to unimaginable horror once it continued. It was an actual masterpiece of storytelling. All over a gnome in a VR game.

Fun fact: You don't actually get the Gnome Vault of My Own achievement until you finish the game. Putting the gnome in the vault is what secures the achievement, but it's not actually rewarded until you reach the very end. In other words, it's entirely possible that the gnome really was bluffing all those times he said "You have failed the challenge!" and Wayne was freaking out over nothing when he didn't get the achievement immediately.

One detail I like is at the end when Wayne takes the headset off he looks at his hand and kind of flexes them which is something you tend to do in VR when you first put your headset on, at least in my experience with it. Him doing it here is showing him not entirely being sure what is reality and what is not. Which makes sense being trapped in the game (?) in place of the gnome he just freed. At least, that's how I see it.

Kinda like a reversed version of the BONEWORKS "entering Fantasyland" cutscene, where Ford takes off his headset and is in his physical office, but still is an in-game avatar with an ammo HUD. Wouldn't be surprised if Wayne and the RTV crew were inspired by that, tbh. The sheer cinematography on the whole ending sequence was awesome, and had me on edge the entire time. Plot twist after plot twist, from the G-nome fakeout to the seamless bodycam footage, which seamlessly transitions to the GMod theater, and then to the goofy gnome stream, all the way to the beautifully shot music video and heartfelt ending. A genuine joy all the way through, can't express that in text form well enough. Bravo, Wayne.

The MUSIC, the TIMING, the CHECKOV’S GUN… I was disappointed at first that this series was acknowledging it was a game, unlike HLVRAI, but hearing Wayne go insane and start going off about how he doesn’t care what chat says, what Baaulp says, what any REAL person says… he just cares about the fake one… damn, it hits so fucking hard I can’t stop commenting about every new thing as I’m watching it, trying to process in real time. FUCK this is golden, everything this man makes is golden. Same - but also, in the original hlvrai streams and some parts of the edits, Wayne is seen referring to the science crew and Benry as having busted programming. Him talking to chat about the AIs being a new mod was cut in the hlvrai edits, but it did happen, iirc. He explains to chat that the AIs will just mess up if he acknowledges them as not being 'real'. Wish it was kept in the edits tbh.

Rewatching the gnome commentary stream after seeing the edited finale made me feel weirdly emotional. There’s something about how this group so genuinely loves telling stories together and creating art in a way that expresses, in my interpretation, a love for each other. They create things together to make each other laugh. I think the audience picks up on this and it heightens the experience. Hearing their thoughts and passion about these projects, even despite all of the roadblocks and barriers, it fills me with an urge to create. It’s a privilege to make art with friends you’ve known for years and years. Hearing the group talk about the love they have for this silly gnome and the story they told makes me genuinely excited for the stories they will tell in the future. RTVS is a group of artists and I think that’s why their community is full of them. Bravo to everyone for this incredible story.

If anything, I thought this would be a teaser for the continuation of HLVRAI, but perhaps it's something more. Sometimes in life, we must accept something, in this case, who we are. The gnome has been waiting for this moment his whole life..he wanted the ocean..while thinking the ocean he was already in was just water. He thought he'd feel different.. But why wasn't wayne mad? How could he have been? All the gnome wanted was to feel something..but his hollow body full of playcoins could only feel one thing..emptiness. Even wayne could see that.

I think the stuff about the obsidian seal and the white forest and the hollows and the girl were all probably teases for a potential sequel, but overall I still feel like Gnome Edition is a pretty self contained story. At first there were a lot of theories that the gnome was secretly someone from HLVRAI but now I definitely don't think that was the case. I think perhaps he has the same origin as the ai from the first series, but he's his own little guy with his own little stuff going on

But as i progressed(somehow) i found his banter hilarious, he had become something of a close acquaintance. Im the end you confused and scared the hell out of me. But hearing your revelation and song at the end was a masterpiece. Its a shame that we no longer get to hear your amazing voice. Seeing this live was RAW. But, the wait for the edited version? It was so, so worth it. The edit came out beautifully, and all the effort you put into it, Wayne, really shows. I don't know if my comments have gone under the radar, or that they're even read, I know with all the stuff going on with you mentally, and being a channel as large as yours, I'm probably just a drop in an endless orchestra of voices. But genuinely, this series has been incredible. You've gone from the ha ha funny Half Life man to someone with genuinely some of the most impressive and stunning writing and showmanship on ALL of KZbin and Twitch. The fact that ALL of this is done LIVE and the extent of editing is like, subtitles and cutting out some bits here and there (that being said the subtitles have always been PEAK) is a FUCKING MONUMENT. Genuinely I have no idea how you do it, and there's probably a reason I've ONLY see you do it. I'll continue this with the simple message of: this is great man and I cannot wait for the next project to hit us. I feel as if there's the pretty heavy handed hint of HL2VR:AI but that's just speculation. I did have the idea of the gnome making his reprise but with the death of his actual voice software, it seems like he truly is gone for good. But perhaps that is for the better, as who knows how he would fit in the group chemistry of the Science Team. But most of all, you have my never ending respect for taking your time and ensuring that your stuff comes out swinging and is never half baked. I WILL NOW GO INTO SPOILER TERRITORY!! FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T FINISHED WATCHING YET OR HAVEN'T WATCHED, STOP HERE!! Honest to god, I expected the thing that Gabe was so afraid of to be the Blue Gnome and that be the pay off, that you couldn't actually kill him and there would be some Benrey style final fight, but the payoff we were given was FAR BETTER. Like I cannot possibly describe the utter dread that came from this video, and the super spooky vibes it gave. While it was obviously lost on some people, I could see the meta-themes, as though I wasn't eagerly watching your channel every day, I still tried to tune in for some development updates. This project- to you- was a rollercoaster of emotions, and ultimately you pushed through like a fucking champ. As you went into the woods, I could see exactly your feelings. As you walked down that corridor, I could feel your dread at facing the end of it. There was so much of a build up, so long of a wait, could you deliver? And damn it Wayne, you delivered it in SPADES. You could feel the emotion in your voice, that wasn't acting. It was as much a catharsis for you as it was those watching. Wayne, you are a motherfucking legend, and deserve all the attention you've received and MORE. Keep up the incredible work, and please please please, never forget that we want the best out of you, and if that means mental health hiatuses, I will be here waiting until the heat death of the universe, and there are thousands that share that sentiment.

Well that end got a little more emotional than I thought, it was anticlimactic at first, but then wayne came back....only one thing bothers me though.. "Goodbye gordon!" SPOILERS: 59:46 PEPPA PIG MOVIE TRANSLATION (for those curious): Hi my name is Peppa Pig and I can't be on this video because I'm about to die. Everything started when I was sleeping but I woke up after a nightmare. I went to the bathroom to pee and then I went to my parent's room but I saw they were already out because of an emergency, when I saw their TV I noticed it was already on and it had a Peppa Pig episode and I liked Peppa so I decided to watch it. Peppa was playing on some mud but her face was full of hate and contempt until the TV turned black for 2 minutes. Then Peppa appeared dead covered in blood and shredded apart. Then the TV turned black once again and the [I couldn't understand this] hid under her bed, but then Peppa's bed sheets opened and the TV turned black yet again but this time with a scream. Then the TV showed Daddy Pig returnig from shopping but before leaving them he heard a scream which scared him so he went to investigate. He found Mommy Pig all full of [I guess they shortened the video and cut out that part] then Mommy Pig cut Daddy Pig's legs and he started screaming because of the pain. I tried to turn the TV off but it wouldn't, then Mommy Pig looked straight at the screen and said "You come next." I screames as hard as I could and I decided to hide on my parent's room. I hid under the bed until I saw something very frightening. I saw my parents but they were dead, dismembered and headless. I cried a lot for them and then I ran quicky to the living room until the TV turned on. The screen was all black until Mommy Pig appeared with Daddy Pig's head all covered in blood. Then Mommy pig startes smiling and said "You are next and you can't stop it. After you I will kill all the pigs in the world. All will die hahaha." I decided to run as fast as I could to my bedroom, I locked my door and I went to my computer and now I'm making this video. Please help I can hear banging on my door. Please help. Oh no she's here. Well, I hope you liked the creepypasta, thank you for watching. That was [name of the channel, I couldn't understand it, but it ends in 77]. I can't take too long with this video... This series was amazing start to finish, and this ending did NOT disappoint. As soon as you entered the vault to witness the gnome just ominously slip out of G-man’s body and slam on the table, I knew this part was gonna be one hell of a ride, and it was. The gnome's audio and his audio are recorded separately. He manually automates reverb and filters when the gnome is in another room or in a trash can or whatever. That's part of why the edited versions of these streams took so long to come out.

I'd like to think of the gnome as the entire internet in Wayne's hands, with the way the gnome is so bipolar. With HLVRAI some of the fans wanted to series to continue and essentially continue on forever, while some are wanting the series to stay where it is. They think Wayne is some robotic entertainer instead of a real person who wants to do other projects besides half life. They want Wayne to be trapped in the headset basically The end is if Wayne did continue the series forever and ever. They realise that this Robotised version of Wayne being represented as the gnome being boring to them is the internet realizing that they have hurt Wayne by not caring about him. That's why they keep calling him Gordon instead of alyx or Wayne, it's because they don't care about Wayne they just want Gordon Wayne has been making fun of us in the best way possible.
