Most fun aspect: To resample a pattern on the fly you obviously don't use any resample button, you idiot, you copy a pattern, hit shift + pattern select and voila you may select a free slot, now lighting up in a pale ominous blue instead of the freindly reassuring red, and after a pause, voila a perfect loop.

Back about 10 years ago when I was hanging out as part of a deeply alternative and chin scratchy music scene in the uk, every single act that came to play in our gallery space used at least 1 SP404 OG or SX. I remember one night where there were 5 of them set up across 3 different acts. It was the most ubiquitous music box I’ve ever seen. My old machine spent half its life loaned out to other people for their live sets. I hope its descendants continue to be made and used in live music long into the future.

When you approach this machine after years of using the 404sx and mastering it, you fly around this thing and it is an absolute joy to use. This is the first time I tick the "Disagree with Florian" box. Hear me out. As an unproud owner of this supersized calculator and having dabbled in Elektron stuff in the past (while still having Model: Samples), I have to say that SP-404: The Sequel looks only simple at the first glance, but once you start dig into it deeper, man, the hell of secondary functions, weird button combos, sub-menus to sub-menus makes your head scratch until the flesh pops out. It's just too damn small for what it can do. On the other hand, once you get past the initial Elektron intimidation in f.e. Digitakt, everything's smooth, hunky dory and most of all-logical. What I get from SP 404 is a love/hate relationship and I both regret and don't regret buying this chopped down cash register. Still, especially with all the firmware updates it's one of the best low-to-mid priced pieces of gear Roland has put on the market in recent years. So me thinks it belongs in "Bad Gear" Hall Of Fame (Shame?) wholesonelly and at the same time it does not at all. Cheers. Keep doing the great job, Herr F.!

I really like mine. For me, it fills the gap between my DAW and my standalone gear really well. MPCs are just a DAW in a box at this pont, and Elektron gear is both unintuitive and incredibly expensive. The 404mk2 is also incredibly portable and acts as a really good 2x4 mobile interface. I can set up with my laptop, 404mk2, and a volca or 2 just about anywhere and have all the FX, sampling, looping, and FL Studio access I need.

Different strokes for different folks... To me the MK2 is hands down the best bang for your buck at $555.00 with tax brand new for a all in one sampling workstation. It's got time stretching, banging effects, auto and manual chop, you can hook up anything to it (even a mic), step and real time sequencing, resampling, etc, etc... You can use resampling in chromatic mode to make chords, bass lines, and melodies to make your own original music. I've bought a lot of gear over the years and didn't have the time, patience, and couldn't understand the manual to really learn my gear. The best thing is the MK2 has the most tutorials I have ever seen for a sampler!! I just got it and already know it pretty well.

I used to produce with 303, no patterns, just live beat recording into Audacity on my linux box. I recently got a 404mk2. These guys have basically built a doomsday beat machine! If we get into MadMax dystopia, people are gonna use the 404 with solar panels and shit. 😄 It's a lovely machine with everything in it. Roland has designed it from all the great feedback they got. SP is for the people! Btw I still sometimes use the 303 because the electronics are so dirty beautiful, even the knob rotations make a sound.

How far things have come since those crappy gemini dj samplers from the early 90s! It’s good to know that this sampling pocket calculator exists, but I’d go for the AKAI MPC One were I to go this sort of route, but my preference is triggering synths vs. samples and all they entail. Please review the new pricey Korg Kaos Replay. Thanks for another great show!

I am close to buying a Syntakt to pair with my SP404. Apparently it's a fantastic combo cause you can use the Elektron sequencer with a massive sample library and FX.

as an old MPC guy I hated the painful process of learning how to use this , but I did , and now I use it ... i like the fx ... and thats about it ... i hate how the sequencer loops badly ... but i still use it. I should just run my mpc 2000xl through it for the fx ... yup :/

I got one on sale not too long ago and was immediately baffled to learn I couldn't even update its firmware via USB. My initial hype died down as it sat as a paperweight for days as I waited for an SD card to be delivered. Ultimately, I still like it, but I do wish its connectivity was better; both midi and USB.

one thing that has perplexed me when I see machines like these is... why has noone decided to at least tried copying the concept of a Stream Deck control panel? I mean, a grid of see through buttons with a display underneath. You get tactile buttons and dynamically switchable icons and animations in each button. sure. one may not want something like those buttons in a finger drum pad. But for the menudiving buttons. The transport, the function buttons. If you had something like that, you can build menus of buttons and you don't have to resort to cryptic multibutton finger twister combo's that only make sense for the people that write the manuals that noone will end up reading.

Its the interface that makes this so fun, @@AudioPilz, i have over 130 cabs (2023 All stars pack, 95% off sale lol), was a bit worried it would be too much but theres no searching through IR File directories, every cab and mic has a pic and description etc, mic position and cab harmonics are just knobs. Theres a decent dynamics section and room verb. Its actively fun to use, very gamified
@damelos4039Ай бұрын
It's the menu diving for me that kills the workflow. Each update brings more esoteric combinations of button sequencing until it becomes numbing. That being said, highly functional and capable machine. High quality and very versatile. If I wanted to spend the time and do a VERY deep dive I'm sure I'd like it more but.....that's a time commitment I cannot make.

I've been using an SP404 Mk2 for almost a year now and it's become my favorite piece of gear aside from my bass. It's relatively cheap for a sampler sequencer and quick to use once you get the hang of it.

I like my 404mk2. It’s great for folks that came up on the older devices but with better connectivity and storage. You can work in the same way people liked working with those machines or you can do a more rudimentary version of what we like about MPCs. Either way, you can easily export your work to a computer for mixing etc It’s great for live players needing to add a few loops or FX to a show. The FX section is a great tool by itself and makes for a great processor for MPCs. I think it’s a fun, capable creative tool. I don’t use it for everything but it’s handy for the things it does well.
