@@nazthesilly A few theories suspect that the Earth that Chell sees in Portal 2 is post-Combine occupied. The Portal and Half-Life games are within the same universe, and Portal 2 takes place approximately 50,000 years after the events of Half-Life 2. For better understanding of that time-frame, 50,000 years ago from today, modern Man began to traverse the land that is currently known as Australia, and 12,000 year ago did we first start to control the production and domestication of plants and animals, effectively kicking off the Agricultural Revolution, which we wouldn't be here today without it. So, assuming the Combine didn't exterminate and enslave the whole of humanity within that time period, the existence of humans in the time setting of Portal 2 is most likely, and are probably still feeling the after effects of a hostile alien occupation of Earth 50,000 years earlier.

GLaDOS probably didn't actually delete Caroline. She knew that she was programmed to get the urge to test again. She now realises that she cares too much about Chell, and decides to let her go. "Killing you, is Hard" she says, which could also be interpreted as emotionally hard. That monotone voice was just an act. If she would delete Caroline, she would delete herself. She probably came up with this act while Chell was unconcious. Also in the song she even literally says "my little Caroline is in here too". That's why they show they also robots, to give an indication that she now has something to test with until eternity and contol that urge. She loves Chell too much, so she lets her go, sings her goodbye (my child; cara mia) and gives her her beloved companion cube.

I feel like having that portal on the moon would have a serious effect on our atmosphere.
@ValleysOfRain5 жыл бұрын
Not really. There is a finite amount of air that can pass through a portal of that size in one go, due to the laws of aerodynamics. It would take an exceptionally long period of time before that would have an appreciable effect on the atmosphere. The Earth's atmosphere has a mass of about 5 quintillion kilograms - that's a 5 with 18 zeroes after it. The portal is more likely going to get blocked by debris long before it has a detectable effect on the atmosphere.

How the hell does an ending of a game 11 years ago still look epicly cinematic. Especially when Chell shoots the last ever portal she will shoot into the moon. 9:29 that *ding* is what makes this ending brilliant
@Gamikane Жыл бұрын
I think a big reason why both of the Portal games have aged so well graphically is because the aesthetic is so "hard" and synthetical. There are a lot of sterile hallways, plastic, steel, machinery, robots. The only organic things we see are plants and sometimes Chell herself through a portal. Humans and animals are difficult to animate convincingly, so the creators sticked with things that were easier to create with the current technology and the result looks really good. The problem with a lot of games that were super advanced for their time and did lots of impressive new things is that they inevitably end up looking dated once the technology progresses past them. Portal kept it simple, and simple still looks good after all this time.

As a kid I loved the idea that once Glados realized she was Caroline, that Chell was her daughter. Especially because of the weird science fair project you find with her name on it, and the comic implying that since there's a teddy bear next to her pod she grew up in the Aperture facility. The Italian lyrics of the son are especially sus, since Glados refers to her as literally: "my daughter". As an adult it's even more heartwarming to think that while Chell may have just been one of the kids of the employees who were eventually forced to test for Aperture, with no connection to Caroline, Glados genuinely feels an eventual kinship with her. Thereby changing the song interpretation to be her figurative "daughter" (more like: my girl-child if you translate literally). This game's lore so holds up to the test of time... I don't think I'll ever not be obsessed with it.

The best ending in any game by far that I’ve experienced. The amount of pain is incredible. GLaDOS is almost upset that their adventure is over especially when that was the closest it’s ever gotten to companionship. The singing is something no short of incredible. The way it scares you into thinking that GLaDOS is back to were they started, only to relieve you into feeling sympathetic for it. Then Chell reaches the top, and you finally make it to where you’ve been trying to go only to realize that you are thousands upon thousands of years in the future. There might not be humanity left on earth, and all we know is how advanced civilization was becoming in half-life all those years ago. So you just feel incredible loneliness right after departing from the only journey you’ve ever known with the only “people” you’ve ever known. All of this within like 6 minutes. Amazing. I can only wish of a portal 3, but with the way it’s ended I don’t think we’ll ever get one. Not a genuine one at least.
