I always assume my job is going away tomorrow. That's why I lived as frugally as possible and saved up $120k cash. That way I can survive for at least 3 years without a job on just my savings without moving back in with my parents. I still rent a room for $1k a month all expenses included because not having a mortgage means I can move wherever I need to, whenever I need to, and I don't have to worry about owing some bank 100s of thousands of dollars while I'm unemployed.

The CEO of my company promised there would be no layoffs at an all hands meeting. 3 months later, there were layoffs. After the layoffs the VP of our division held a debrief to discuss the aftermath. When asked why there was a layoff when the CEO promised there wouldn’t be one, he said “if someone promises you there won’t be layoffs, don’t believe them.” And he’s right of course. I was just surprised to hear him say it out loud. There will always be layoffs.

this video is very accurate and I've seen it play out for 30 years now. Very sad. The best option for most that I can think of, is either an actual shop selling and diversifying in something, or more than one professional expertises and have more than one remote contracts. And I mean professional as in valued educated expertise. Maybe use one for the stable job with the pension and insurance and the other to supplement the income you lose annually because your wages don't increase as fast as inflation. BTW other economies think this is the American system and they are so better off but in reality this is coming for them too, they are just behind in the financial development. It's the shrinking of the middle class causing it, IMHO

Of course people will work to adapt to the times to keep food on the table and these tips are very helpful for that! I'll be honest, moving temporarily and potentially fully to another country for currency arbitration is not a bad move at all provided you can work remotely. Also speaking of working remotely, that being the true way out if you ever want to reclaim your time back. Certifications help to get you back to making much more potentially but it's more important to stay abreast to what you can do immediately with what you already know to make more specifically with the goal of investing into passive income. As you get older it's really really important to remember to look for those tiny hinges that open really big doors as you ain't getting younger for damn sure.

That's what I try to tell people when they question how I can afford to travel after a layoff. 😀 Almost everywhere is LCOL compared to NYC, so subletting my place and moving my daily expenses to somewhere cheaper actually works out better in the long run (and the longer you stay, the quicker you pay off the initial flight which is really the only big investment) And +1 for remote work! Early on I think I had the deck somewhat stacked against me, volatility early childhood, bad schools, people with low to no education and carrying generational trauma, and a lot of neglect. Didn't think it was outside the norm till my mid to late 20's, when I started noticing I've atrophied, lagged behind in terms of starting a family, maintaining long and fruitful relationships. There's a lot of guilt and shame everyday that people will find out I'm a recluse and slowly seem to be getting worse even with what seems like consistent therapy and workout routine, perhaps they are distractions. But I'm feeling really lost, and burnt out of the 9-5 and worried that because of my consistent brain fog and lack of motivation and top of that severe social anxiety that I might find myself in a worse place. I'm not really capable of asking for help because of the shame and anxiety.

At my current job they just fired one of the hardest workers in the office for yolo. Never talk about management and when you have a voice of the employee meeting you shut your mouth unless you want a target. Everything I learned in college is a damn lie and I want a refund 😂

Girl! Even though I am grateful I am currently employed, who is not to say I will be laid off anytime soon? That’s why it’s important to take agency into our careers! I definitely plan to apply to another role by the end of the year even though I like my company because I need to make more money lol So add me to the statistics of job hoppers who only stay for 2-3 years 😂

in the adaptability section of this video, men already caught on to that, that's why not as many of us are in college and talk that career nonsense, and more of us try to figure out other ways of doing things such as building things and growing food, because from the time we're little we see everyone following society's plan of sacrificing time, health, and happiness for a few extra dollars, and always coming up short🤔, and i'm glad that miss independent is starting to catch on👌👍

Capitalism doesn't suck, it's called cronyism and boomers are by far the worst generation of corrupt cronies that siezed every facet of our economy, including generational wealth.
@charliedallachie35397 ай бұрын
Yep, things seemed to be a lot better even just 20 years ago but it’s always been a capitalist system. Today’s issues are due to more corrupt corporatism than capitalism. The market used to be more employee friendly too.

Still a capitalism problem. The iron law of oligarchy rears its ugly head in late stage capitalism. Trying to perpetually create a state if early stage capitalism is unbelievably difficult I just don't see how social democracy is going to achieve this perpetually. Not knocking everything that got us to our current point but time to think ourside the box and look for new solutions to a changing world and leave capitalism behind us. Granted i say that hope we don't trade it in for feudalism as capitalism is an upgrade for sure but we are not at the end of history.
@charliedallachie35397 ай бұрын
@@Tycon wish I was more knowledgeable but from what Ive heard, a lot of deregulation has happened in the 80s, …I think more regulations (like against fake job postings) and more workers rights are needed….among others things. No economic system is perfect in this world, each has its strengths and weaknesses.

You have no job stability unless you get a union job or a government job, and even then if a new legislature or administrator comes in and decides to cut funding for your job you can be furloughed. Still, the few jobs left with a pension in this country are pretty much union job and government jobs (though the base salary is usually lower than the private sector in professional services positions).

I'm curious which industry you're in? A lot of my friends are non-tech but still white-collar office jobs (project managers, sales, recruiting, finance, marketing, etc.). There's certainly lots of traditionally educated fields that are still stable at the moment (healthcare, law) but I do wonder how long that will lasts with AI only getting more sophisticated!

@WesleyAnna8 ай бұрын
Oof insurance in the US is the biggest pain in the a** T_T if you're married (or lucky enough to still be a dependent) then joining someone's plan is the best route. If not, you can always get marketplace insurance! it's more money for less service, but you'll still be covered.

You do not know how horrible a union is until you have been in one, or have worked in management that deals with unions. You see your precious mandatory tax? Yep, consider its utilization for government salaries to be about half that of what you’d normally expect. That’s right. Whatever you think is fair, cut it by another half and you get what government salaries pay for. People work for less, and you have to pay for it. This is a way for you to be on the other side of the employee employer divide in a sense.

The Third Industrial Revolution. The end of middle class. A lot of people will get left behind. Millionaire is becoming the new middle class. You won't get there by working a job. You have to use your voice, skill, talent & mindset to make millions. Everyone can't do that. Most people can't. That's why there are so few celebrities, successful businessowners & content creators because most people don't have the IT factor. The good news is you don't have to be born with the IT factor. You can create the IT factor, but again few people have it or can create it. That's why there is one that can lead many, but it is never the opposite. Scary times ahead.
