Agreed on the rant. Perhaps tuning shops could insist customers sign a detailed disclaimer, promising that they will not use it on the road/will not do 150 on the bypass/will slow down outside schools and old peoples' homes and so on before releasing a vehicle. I know it would feel a bit daft, but if it saves getting prosecuted, might be worth considering. Re. Rick's analogy with the barman, in the US, bar staff can be prosecuted if they serve drink to someone who is intoxicated. The world's going mad. What happened to personal responsibility?

This is the rule for the UK... Can a pub serve a drunk person? It is an offence to sell alcohol to a person that is already drunk. You can also refuse entry to the premises to a drunk person, with door staff able to assist should they be employed.

I 100% agree with you Rick, too many helmets out there who say they are vehicle repair specialists or tuning specialists. With no training whatsoever. How is this regulated! It’s not! I have to spend the best part of £15,000 each a year on training my techs and even more to Develop them to Master Tech’s. There is continuous Development In Place every year to learn about the latest repair methods. I get questioned daily about why i charge for diagnostic work. Apparently all i do is plug in a diagnostic laptop and it tells me what the problem is. If it’s that easy why don’t you fix it yourself is normally my response. But Freddy who got a Halfords Socket set and eBay scanner for his 18th Birthday is allowed to work on these vehicles without as much as a KZbin Video on how to fix a problem. Anyone looking to prosecute someone with a Penis & Balls Map i’d be asking them what their level of vehicle knowledge is. Has the judge got an Advanced Automotive Engineering Qualification probably not. If i purchase something from you or any other Vehicle Tuning Company and use it in an illegal state that is my fault and my fault only. I’ve been the knob who committed an offence. Not the person selling it to me. Does that mean if i buy a car that is capable of more than 70mph and get caught speeding, is that the fault of the manufacturer? NO! Best of luck pal and ensure you have a disclaimer signed on every invoice paid for. Rant Over, I’m now wound up for the entire day 🤣👍.

Had that kind of wear on a few BMW M and S 1000rr's cavitation caused by air pockets in the oil bursting under pressure and taking away material from the shells, like you say that's usually caused from oil degregation and or to high RPM/ overspeed. We were told by BMW to increase the bearing clearance so a thinner walled bearing to increase the oil film between crank and bearing

Perfectly valid point Ricky. 👍 The only way forward is to get a disclaimer signed by the customer to accept the responsibility of operating the vehicle after illegally after any modifications have been made. The authorities going after the businesses that tuned these vehicles need to look at better regulations and training of the whole industry - there are some terrible sub standard and dangerous practices that need addressing first.

Hi Ricky, I had a job like that a little wile ago where the big end shells were pitted just like that and could not work out what the hell happened . Oil pump ok , oil level ok service oil change intervals up to date . After some research found out there was a very bad earth connection that created an arc that pitted the shells . Sorted out the bad earth. Engine rebuild after no problems. 😊

Completely agree with you on all points! Good rants as usual! I have new Fiesta ST and it pops and bangs in SPORT Mode. But it also comes with a RACE Mode. It has a little disclaimer when you put it in that mode, but we all know everyone who owns one will play around with it on the road... Difference between SPORT and RACE is the ESC is off in RACE and the dash has some pretty RPM lights and a shift indicator. But the ESC can be turned off manually... so I'm braking the law by using RACE, but not if I use SPORT and turn off the ESC.

I am late on this but the car with the bearing issues, did it run E85? That pitting can be common with an E fuel car that has oil contamination then sits for a bit. Start it, move, shut down before oil is at full temp and you burn the E off, absorbs water and you see the pitting (basically corrosion) in the bearing surface.

Welcome to California... When i started Raver Motorsports in 1996, we had EVERY customer pull the license plates and sign a waiver that the car would not be used on public roads. We got called out on it once, and I made the same argument you did. Luckily the cop had some common sense and didn't push the issue. By CA law, we WERE liable. And yes, CA has a law that says if someone was drinking at your house, and you let them drive home, you are liable.

I fully agree with your rant. It seems like the UK government are trying the same thing the US government did with tuning companies over there. They fined a lot of companies for supplying customers with "off-road" use products that were fitted to road legal vehicle, which includes aftermarket ECUs, as part of the EPA's clean air act. When I saw/heard about that happening I knew it was only a matter of time before it hit the UK.

Another excellent video and yes you are right to have a rant about injustice Why should the car tuners be responsible for what customers do with modified cars, that is like asking you to police customers use Here is a tip that we found works really well . We keep getting customers with BMW M5 come in with the injectors stuck in the heads we found that if you pour coke into the heads and let it soak overnight you will be able to knock out the injectors in the morning.

100% agree with you. The judge's perspective is that you are an engineer who has been approached to drill out a starting pistol so now it can fire rounds. If you scratch a little deeper you see that the two situations aren't equatable. Seems like a lack of understanding in the powers that be, same situation with new tech legislation :/

Adding lubricants to bolts (and spark plugs) that are not specified by the manufacturer just results in over tightened bolts and spark plugs! If you follow the rated tightening torque you will over tighten them and that might result in failed threads in a head, seized bolts etc. It’s only valid to use lubricant if the book tells you precisely which lubricant to use and the torque setting is quoted lubricated. I’m told that tightening very high torque bolts in the oil and gas industry is sometimes done lubricated this way on very high pressure pipe junctions for example but the precise lubricant, method and lubricated torque are documented.

I drive 1100bhp Nissan Gtr r35. Ive always loved cars. Bought my first car at the age of 14. I agree with you for the most part, however, performance car owners need to be more responsible and considerate. If you drive a car with a loud exhaust think twice before accelerating hard in a 30 limit, especially if there are houses and kids nearby. If it’s after 19:00 in evening don’t be accelerating hard near people’s houses and running pops and bangs maps. 9 out of 10 people do not want this going on outside their houses. It’s only going to result in complaints to the authorities and we are going to end up getting taxed off the road or changes to emissions, noise limits etc will mean use of our performance cars on the road will soon be a thing of the past.

Ive seen similar on bearing shells when the owner of a car that he didnt use much, thought starting the car and running it at idle for 5 mins every week would be a good thing.(to help charhe his battery and get oil pressure) Condensation in the crankcase poluted the oil as it never actually goy up to temp and corroded the bearings.

Ricky, I understand your rant, totally. In the USA as you are aware the EPA are targeting these tuners and the fines are massive. The environmental improvements trying to clean up air pollution include improving emissions from ICE vehicles. The UK has one of the most permissive countries in the world to allow individuals and businesses to work on cars and engines. Germany you have change tyres every year, you can't fit non TUV parts. As legislation tightens its emission levels are going to tighten... Engine builders and tuners will be restricted on what they will be able to do. I love cars and engines but they will be legislated against and the screw will tighten and selling non homologated parts will result in court cases. Change is a coming and it's not going to be pops and bangs all round...

R8 bearings look like a cavitation problem. Caused by either oil starvation, too high clearance or/and oil airation. Is the big end spun on the first journal that would suffer from oil starvation, in an oil surge situation for example ? My guess is hard track use causing oil surge, causing slight shell damage, causing oil clearance incease causing oil pressure loss causing shell failure/spin . Vicious circle of events.

Don’t disagree with anything you said about tuning mate, but the part I think is missing is that nobody can self regulate any more, it’s the same as the stupid race fit exhausts and ‘growlers’ on bikes, people are obsessed with pushing things as far as they possibly can then moaning that they get fingered. I live near Thamesdown drive and honest it’s just traffic light Grand Prix and pops and bangs and totally straight piped cars… this doesn’t change your very valid point that it’s not YOUR fault, but I just think it is a dimension of the argument, that people just want to take everything to the extreme. Same as the pub thing, 5-6 pints with your mates, act like an adult, have a laugh and don’t end up tying up 4-5 nurses and admin at the hospital and they could treat people who are dying of stuff they didn’t choose. Not trying to be holier than thou, honestly not as I’ve got a pipe on my Ducati, but I just think we all have to act like grown ups then we don’t need people regulating the sh*t out of us

If you want to do major car mods in Oz the first thing you need to do is find an approval engineer to certify the finished vehicle and that cost serious money. All workshops are licensed and must have a minimum level of equipment and all technicians are licensed after an approved apprenticeship. Smashed write off's are put into a data base so they can be tracked but even with all the above the shonks still get away with selling cars that should be crushed.

The thing is, car manufacturers have to make cars that fulfill emission standards and make provisions to prevent tampering with these is to ensure the vehicle will keep within emission standards for a specific time frame and distance traveled. You have seen what happened in Dieselgate when the manufacturers didn't do this properly. It has been many years since this legislation is in place. When a company manages to break the anti-tampering that manufacturers have to put in and knowingly modify the software (and/or hardware) they should obviously be aware that the vehicle will no longer fulfill the homologation requirements. Putting the requirement on the tuning companies to ensure that cars aren't used on the public road after the software has been modified is maybe a bit steep, but just for legal liability, I think it is fair to have the customer sign a waiver where they state that they are aware that the modification performed makes the car illegal to drive on the public road and that this modification will make the car be legal to be used on private grounds (track) only. They will have to also state that the company doing the modification will not be liable if the owner decides to break the law and if a magistrate decides they are, the customer will be fully liable for all costs and damages that the company performing the modification endures as a result of the customer breaking the law. It's not really what you want, but if you want to make money on putting pops and bangs on some barryboys shitbox, you will need to cover your behind....

agree with the rant from the point of the responsibility being the owner of the car... but pops and bangs can get in the fkin sea, i live in a residential area, its a 30 zone but its a big wide road that leads onto the A10 out of london, cars go through the speed camera 500m down the road, floor it and then ease off to go round the slight corner which is exactly where i live and you get a relentless pop and crackle throughout the night. Ive had cars where they pop occasionally on overrun because its had head work and cams (carbs and a dizzy) but the maps people put on make it sound like a spanner in a washing machine on a spin cycle going on for ages and it can f right off (even from factory). Ive also bought and fixed up a Cat N car. i lost money on it because i went to extra lengths to make it perfect and im a hobbiest doing it on the driveway. but my neighbour has a car which is held together with wood screws.. as much as i love car modifying, i would be happier with TUV style system. I have an issue with people tinting their front windows as well but thats because i almost got taken out on my motorbike because they wern't looking an i couldnt see them to know if they had looked or not (which i do when riding around town because people pull out all the time)

About the bearings, it looks like they drove too short distances, not enabling to heat up the oil (or the oil cooler is working too good) hence the moist or condense in the oil is eating into the bearings. They have to make sure the oil temperature is going beyond the water booling temp so it can evaporate.

Yeah I did think that! Does look like a degree of corrosion!

Did you send the oil off for a sample test? I've seen fully synthetic that's been open soak up water and wreck bearings

Guys if your doing work on a road car that make it illegal you can only blame yourself. If the car turns up at the shop with an interior, stereo furry dice et all, you know it's used on the road. The same criteria would apply for having a hydraulic hand brake, when it comes to mot

You missed out on window tinting companies doing front windows too dark, police only ever get the driver or owner to just remove the tint!

I used to do tinting, never did the front doors, the tinter will get slaughtered when there is a serious accident and the driver says I didn’t see because the tint on the window reduced my vision. When the s***t hits the fan always remember the customer will lie his arseoff, .

people will always want to make their cars faster, I agree with your rant completely, If anyone is taken to court over a car it should always be the driver, if I drove a mates car and got pulled to find it has a bald tyre, the police would give me the points not the car owner, stating that it is up to the driver to make sure everything is legal before you drive. Why is a tuned car any different for any reason? I drive a stage 1 tuned nissan juke nismo. you can find my build list on Eddie Antics. I try to show on there, that you can have a fast modified car on the road while still sticking to mot rules, and therefor keeping the traffic cops from wrecking my night

So, whos fault will it be then when I get done for speeding? Is it the manufacturers? or the shop I bought my R1M from? after all they didnt even ask me how fast I was going to ride it

Does the manufacturer fit it with a Speedo? Did the shop sell you it conform to UK road legal requirements at the time? Have you passed a driving test and have a valid license?

Hi Ricky I'm involved with people in recovery and I'm in recovery myself (over 2.5 years nothing not a beer). Government give away free needles at boots chemists ask for a exchange pack its annonymous as well. Are there any turbo upgrades for the k03 turbo that won't involve s3 injectors and high-pressure fuel pump that I can run on a tsi engine for a happy medium which I can put on my stage 2 set up(with out pops and bangs)? I know there is a forge motorsport actuator upgrade, would that add anything? Cheers Jamie

No your rant is totally justified. I'm guessing the magistrate live on a street where boy racers drive causing a noise nuisance.

I was filling up recently & heard waaarp, pop, pop, bang, crackle. Looked round expecting to see a young lad, nope 2 coppers in an unmarked Hyundai i30N pulling in to the petrol station!

Hi Andy, Yes we miss him when he’s away. Hectic family life. It’s a juggling act. We try to go to as many weekends as we can, but both our boys play football. So not always possible.

@REPerformanceUK I know u do the football bit (hate it myself) but didn't know if it was just a bit of a break. I know u still have to sort things with work despite the lazy sod skiving on holiday, sorry working 🤔 from experience the break can be welcome but also from experience reuniting can be bloody good too, lol 😆
