The ones I used to catch at 5.25 am from Mt Druitt were older versions of those. You can tell by the windows. Frost on the ground with doors that wouldn’t shut. Old timber shutters that went up and down, most of the time anyway. But….come summer there was nothing like sitting on the floor with the doors open, 6” from death catching the breeze.👍 Thanks for the video.

This footage is amazing! The front bedroom windows of my grandparents house in Quakers Hill looked right out across the road directly at the station. Every school holidays, I member watching the red rattlers stopping at Quakers Hill to let passengers out at night when I as 7 or 8yo (1992-93ish). All I could see was a long line of windows illuminated from the inside of the carriages. Their traction motors made one hell of a distinctive whine as they got back up to speed after leaving the station. Its a sound I'll never forget! I remember riding them into the city with my Nan before they were completely taken out of service.

They used them on the Hunter line until at least 1995. Used to ride these all the time, hot in summer and freezing in winter. Best trains ever.

Every time I see a video image of a Sydney Rail carriage (single decker or double decker) I cringe!!! As an apprentice fitter and turner at Tulloch Limited (Rhodes, NSW) I provided cheap child labour to machine those window frames in a large drill press turned into a make-shift milling machine. I must have worked on millions of those bloody frames. The work was mind-numbingly boring and as far as my apprenticeship was concerned - taught me bloody nothing. I HATE THOS ALUMINIUM WINDOWS!!! That said, I really like your rail videos, thanks! Have a good 2022. PS: The two-tone green inside the drivers cab reminds me of a funny story. We were making the double-decker carriages at the time and there was a theft of a large amount of green paint from the Carriage Shop store. Nobody knew who did it. Several weeks later this chap, a Maltese labourer who drove an ancient Humber Super Snipe (apparently to cart around all his kids) arrived at work and parked opposite the main works gates on Concord Road; the car was sporting a shinny new two-tones green paint job - everybody (except management) knew where the paint theft has gone 😁😆😁

Great video thanks for posting. 60+ years of service from them - I wonder how long the current fleet will last?

Wow. I had forgotten how incredibly noisey public transport used to be. For some reason I miss it too.

The face of them always seemed so sad & forelorn. Maybe the poor old things were just exhausted. So many childhood memories.

What was going on at Hornsby with that silver set running a little too close behind the red rattler?

Hey, how many other shots were obtained from Hornsby Box? They are stunning, and a great modelling reference. I'd be very keen to see more if there are any please?
