Shanks meeting with Mihawk was super good as well. Shanks' actor cracking up when he said "I could take you with an arm behind my bahahahaha!" was perfect, it felt like a blooper that they kept in and it encapsulates how fierce but goofy the Red Hair Pirates are; also, Mihawk going "Hmph...I suppose I could go for a drink..." is so diva and totally fits a guy that rides around on a boat with green candle fire and lives in a gothic castle with ghosts and baboons.

What I loved most about that was the sequence before and after it. Sanji declares something like "no one hurts Nami" then he gets to do a finishing move, Zoro tells him he'll fit in, Usopp runs in like "oh good job guys" THEN his face of 'Nami!' like it all worked out, every member congratulated him on something. And she just runs past him. So he goes from goes from badass kicks to hands in his pockets to potential reward with the hug, to casually accepting theyre not there yet (or ever based on what Oda said about romance) and then nods like 'yeah, that seems about right' and puts his hands back in his pocket, the suave emmer-effer. Even the flying kick! I love how confident he is and how he really cares about her to the point where if she doesn't reciprocate he just rolls with it.

The one thing that really, really annoyed me was Nojiko not having figured it all out. I would have been okay, for simplicity, with the rest of the town not understanding, but why Nojiko? Yeah, like nami didn’t have to know that nojiko knew, you could have amped up her isolation that way still, and nojiko could have been extra hostile as compensation to make sure nami didn’t get punished for being soft on her… idk I loved nojiko’s knowing looks in the manga, gave her more big sister energy than the live action.

Literally just you describing the Genzo and Nami scene when she had lost all the money she had been saving brought me to tears. It's my biggest gripe with the live action that the Cocoyashi villagers didn't know what Nami was doing. I really wish the Live Action had the chance to include that, but I'm wondering what was the reason that the change occurred. I believe "Of course I will" was the translation for the subtitles in the Japanese version of the anime. It definitely has more impact than "Okay." My second biggest gripe with the live action is that Usopp never had a moment of importance to shine. There are two chances in the second season where I can see him having a big impact, which I really hope they nail, because otherwise the new people watching might wonder why he's around. While Garp may have had too much screentime, I did enjoy his scene with Zeff. It definitely gave a bit more clarity to what this version of Garp is doing. YOU DIDN'T EVEN MENTION THE BARREL SCENE!

This is very true. For those of us who know the source material, we know fully well just how large the One Piece world really is. As a result, the live action version can seem somewhat smaller by comparison at first glance. But for someone who's a newcomer to the world of One Piece, this live action show really does display how big and intricate the world is. Newcomers to the series that I've seen have really gotten the correct impression that this world is very big and unique. It helps that the live action show made a lot of use of maps showing the different parts of the One Piece world.

The whole story was a waste of time that should have been spent on fleshing out the Straw Hats (Usopp and Sanji didn't get enough spotlight) and maybe also on adapting a few more aspects of Baratie and Arlong Park. Him covering himself in dirt and mud while thinking about what lie to tell the crew and progressively getting more and more upset with himself to the point of standing back up and attacking Chu was such a powerful scene... I honestly don't understand why they didn't keep it. They had all the setup for it, the scene would've taken no more than 30 seconds and it's such an important scene for Ussop's character early on.

@@NoahStewit's not that they allowed it, they did not have a choice. Arlong wanted Nami for her Navigation skills, and he would not allow anyone else to do it. And they lied about it because they wanted Nami to hate them, so that she would never come back one day. That is the gut punch, she was trying to save them, and they wanted her to leave and live her own life. It is a bit of a misguided notion, but they had no choice. My biggest problem with the villagers not knowing is that they do a 180 immediately after Nojiko tells them the truth. The entire village, especially Nojiko, have spent the last 10 years vehemently hating Nami for siding the Arlong Pirates, the ones who murdered her mother. They can not just turn that hatred off so easily as if it was a simple misunderstanding.
@Will-T.
@Will-T. Жыл бұрын
@@rhuanv I felt like they didn't explicitly want Nami to leave. I think they just wanted Namit to have the option to leave. If Nami knew that everyone in the village knew what she was doing and knew that everyone was placing their hope on her, she would feel obligated to stay. They wanted her to be able to run away if she ever decided it was too much for her. But they were patiently holding out in the hopes she might free them. When Arlong betrays her and the plan fails, They admit they knew and decide to no longer just tough it out.
@kennwin

Agree that it was unfortunate they cut out some of Nami’s story. Genzo’s scars, Nami being kidnapped instead of her willingly join Arlong, Nami’s tattoo and being kicked out of the village, Nami saying she doesn’t want to live just like Bellmere (which imo feeds into her cat burglar trait) and Nojiko being shot. Nami’s delusion telling everyone she could raise the money again and Gen telling her it’s okay. 😭 Those events made the “help me” scene so much heavier and gave me massive respect to how tough Nami’s was before she finally broke. I understand time was limited and they worked with what they could but I can’t help but compare to how powerful it was in the manga. Emily Rudd did a phenomenal job in her performance, nonetheless. If we get future seasons, I’m really curious how involved Oda will be. From what I heard, Season 1 seemed to be a heavy workload for him. 🤔

It makes me sad that Nojiko's tattoos were robbed of their meaning in the adaptation. Nami's bond with Nojiko isn't as strong if Nojiko isn't acting as a support for Nami during this time in her life. @@EliasJWhite100% It’s like LA Nojiko says she has hated Nami the entire time but just got similar tattoos cause she thought it was cool 😂😂 That little moment in the manga, after Gen kicks Nami out, between her and Nojiko was heartbreaking. @notationmusical
@notationmusical Жыл бұрын
Also another little nitpick: In the LA, Luffy DID know about Nami. He was there when Nojiko told them about Nami's past. I think that just takes away a little from the "help me" scene because he said he doesn't. I guess we're supposed to assume he means that he doesn't know her pain or something? In the manga, Luffy went to go take a nap saying he doesn't care about Nami's past, which shows the beauty of his simplicity. And when Luffy bluntly says he doesn't know anything about Nami, he truly means it. All he cares about is if Nami will let him help her. (It's also becoming a recurring theme that Luffy almost always sleeps whenever someone's telling a backstory.)

@@notationmusical All that Luffy knew was only what her Sister told him, that Arlong killed her Mom, and now Nami is working for him. That’s all. Any further development is shown to the viewer, but not to Luffy. He doesn’t know WHY, or anything about her deal with him. Why Nami betrayed them and her entire village. By all accounts, Nami is a bad guy and a traitor to them, but he still doesn’t care. It may not be exactly like the source, but Luffy is still ignorant of the context, so him saying “I don’t” when told he doesn’t know what’s going on, is still valid. I also struggled as a manga nerd watching this version, but ultimately I think that it's nice that people who are interested in the series enough to pick up the books or anime will be able to see the additional layers that weren't able to make it into the live action. I was upset when a scene wasn't as good as I thought it deserved to be, but given the practicalities I think the producers were operating on a 'perfect is the enemy of the good' mentality, and it's a net positive to put the live action out in the world, even if it's not perfect. I've talked with 5 different newbies to the series and each time I had to hold back my nitpicks, but considering how much they seemed to enjoy the show I have come to the conclusion that even a worse adaptation is still good, and the more engagement One Piece gets, the better

I love Hachi as a character, but frankly, in the manga he doesn’t do much except lying heavily injured most of his time. Apart from giving information on celestial dragons and prejudices toward fishmen, which can be gathered in lots of other ways, his most important action was introducing Luffy to Rayleigh, which could also easily occur without him. He doesn’t do anything of importance on the fishmen island’s arc. Keimi the siren is plot wise much more important than Hachi.

Episode 7: Our first “Marimo”! And I love that Zoro calls Sanji "Waiter." It's almost more insulting than "love cook" because it's downgrading his skills as the cook/chef. They called out Jimbei, my favorite character! I love the detail that they turn the tangerine peels into pinwheels. God, the “Help me” scene gets me every time! My only complaint about it is that I wish it was daytime. Also, Nojiko and the village not knowing about it and skipping the scene where Nami is trying to put on a brave face doesn't make Nami feel as desperate as in the source material. And while it's hard to watch Nami stab herself, it didn’t feel like the mutilation it does in the original. Episode 8: I loved the confrontation between Garp and Luffy. It’s sort of what he does at Water 7, just without the info dump on Dragon, the Yonko, and the New World. And Garp uses Haki. I love the detail that when Garp tells Koby that his uniform seems to be fitting, that the uniform does actually look like it fits now. It’s no longer a baggy wrinkled messy. Seeing the dub over their dreams with the flashbacks was awesome! Zeff putting the poster under Employee of the Month is hilarious! I loved the scene between Shanks and Mihawk! And the Revolutionary Army tease in the Kaya scene. I loved the Smoker tease. However, I do think his role as the first “good Marine” we meet has been undercut a little by Garp because while Garp certainly hasn’t been “good” he definitely hasn’t been evil. Didn't they also cast Dragon? And who was on the bounty poster behind Alvida in episode 8? I'm disappointed there was no reference to the other Worst Generation members. But that may be in season 2 when are actually in the Grand Line. If we do get more of Koby in season 2, I hope we see Garp's training regiment (battleship bags.)

RE: The marines screentime, that is likely also a product of budgeting issues. In general, the purpose of a B-plot is to fill in runtime while not being as expensive: they can reuse the same indoor sets and not have any stunts or CG. That's inevitable in any TV show production, and it makes the 8 episode limit feel even more restrictive. Let's hope Netflix plays it smart for Season 2 and they listen to the showrunners' budgeting requests.

I loved how they adapted Arlong Park. Emily Rudd embodied Nami excellently. She knew exactly what she was doing. All of the emotional beats with Nami's character progression worked so well. Emily clearly knew what makes Nami tick, and it shows in how much wide range she displayed with Nami's thoughts and emotions.

The infamous scene between Nami and Luffy hit all the beats it needed to for me. I cried again. Emily did amazing in this arc. Same with the kid actor. All the kid actors deserve a lot of credit in this series. Nami is my favorite Straw Hat in the manga and I wasn't sure I liked the more jaded version of her this show gave her, but these last two episodes felt like the Nami I know and love. Not sure how I feel about the villagers not knowing something they knew in the manga and Luffy knowing something here that he didn't know in the manga. I'm still sorting that out. I did really miss the walk (though we did at least get the "right" and everyone ready to go) and Luffy's speech to Arlong about what he can't do but also what he can do, especially after Godoy managed to deliver some other iconic lines from this arc so well. I think this was a really good adaptation. I just wish some moments could have been added and less time spent on the marines here. While I did like Coby and Luffy's reunion I'm still not sure how to feel about Garp since I've barely even run into him in the manga yet (just the Chronicle of Coby and Helmepo's Toils). Really wish this show had had 10 episodes to flesh some more out. Don't get me wrong, I loved it, but as I am now a One Piece fan, I want more! I really dug the banter between Sanji and Zoro as I just saw them really starting to get into that competitive dynamic at the point I am at in the manga which is Little Garden. In fact, their competitiveness mirrored Dorry and Broggy's so it was great to see that part of their relationship brought in even earlier in the show. I loved everything with the wanted poster and Luffy finally getting his jolly roger too. Can't wait for season two. Good thing I still have the manga to keep me going - now on to Alabasta! Maybe I can even get some of my friends to try out this live action version.

For the manga version of Luffy's "Of Course I will" scene, the english translation unfortunately is from an era of One Piece that didn't have the best localization. His phrasing in Japanese when he agrees to Nami's plea for help was " 当たり前だ!!!" (Atari Mae Da), which CAN be translated as simply "OKAY!!!" but it unfortunately loses a LOT of its meaning. The phrase itself can be translated more as something that's so obvious or clear that it often doesn't need much explanation. What Luffy is essentially communicating to Nami here is that she never needed to ask in the first place, he was always here to help her (though her vocally asking for help is very important). It reinforced aspects of Luffy's character for me by understanding this line, because he isn't just showcasing how dedicated he is to Nami but also a bit of his playful personality. It's as if he was saying "Cmon, did you really expect me to say no? You know me." The most accurate one-to-one english phrase for it I could think of would be "Obviously I will" or some other variation if we're staying concise; however, in english it tends to lean more in the snarky side than the sincere side.

Also "Obviously" doesn't roll off the tongue that well. IMHO they chose the best translation, the delivery just fell flat. The first time he says it, it sounds good. My wife is now jumping into OP due to the LA. Something I LOVED about Arlong Park was how much of an amusement park it looked . It's something kinda minor at the time, but will make the parallel to Sabaody park WAY easier to see rather than just have Nami explain at fishman island. Also I LOVE garp's arc through this season. His inability to let Luffy go being a central conflict for him makes him an amazing antagonist and koby basically showing that he's 'mini-garp'...just 'chef's kiss'.

This show was my introduction to One Piece, and the first 2 episodes made me realize I might have missed out on something potentially big in my childhood by not getting into one-piece, e3 and 4 made me doubt whether one-piece truly was what I thought it was from the previous episodes, but from episode 5 and onwards I genuinely felt like I understood it. This show feels so big, and goofy, and thrilling and most of all It's so genuine. What I got from it: This is the story of kids who want to have the adventures of their childhood stories and imaginations, not because they don't know any better, but because they believe that the world should be better. It should be a world of adventure and legendary stories, and dang-it they are getting the one piece!

My theory is that they cut Loguetown in this series and will have that as the first episode in the next series. It makes sense to me because they wanted Arlong to be the final villain. Having a extra episode where they go into Loguetown and then into the grand line might not work for western audiences who dont know anime and are used to having series end with the defeat of a main villain. So, the Smoker cameo in the last episode hints to me that Loguetown will be the first episode in season 2.

16:45 In Japanese Luffy says 当たり前だ which fits nicer to a screaming outburst like that than "Okay". I actually think I would consider that a mistraslation, because the English "Okay" really doesn't work like that. At least for me. Out of context, the lines "Help me" and then "Okay" work. But the context here is that Luffy has almost never wanted anything in his life as much as he wants to help Nami in this moment, and now finally Nami has given him permission. I think lines like the original 当たり前だ and Inaki's "Of course I will" convey that context much better than "Okay". Yes, at face value, Nami is asking Luffy for help. But that's not actually the exchange that's really going on, and Luffy's answer should reflect that he knows this better than anyone. I also really like the addition the live-action did of him saying it quietly to Nami first. Some times being calm makes things hit harder. It's more reassuring. He's got this. You don't have to worry any more. Heck, I'm starting to cry again just typing it out. I think that's what the hat hand-off achieves in the source material, but here they went for a more explicit route, and I'm all for it.

The stabbing scene where luffy replies with "Okay!" in the manga is a variation in translation from japanese. @17:57 in anime Luffy says "of course I will !" ("atarimaida ! ") Since, i didn't read initial manga volumes till recently I didn't know that it was translated as "Okay" ... because in Japanese it has always been "atarimaida!" which means "Of course I will !" So, the live action followed the original Japanese version of meaning "atarimaida" or "Of course I will !" . Anyway it made me teary and cry in both during Nami's scream as well as during Help me. I also liked how it wrapped up with Garp. We could see the internal struggle of Garp as a Grandpa and a Vice admiral throughout the season and here finally Garp is honest with his feelings and letting passing it on and letting go of the next generation, which hits lot harder knowing what's happening in the manga, recently. My main issues are the Genzo-Nami moment and Ussop's dilemma. If these two were done, ot would've been perfect in it's own way. Cutting 10 min of Garp B plot and giving it to these scenes would've done wonders.

Several have touched on the "villagers/Nojiko didn't know about Nami's sacrifice change". A change that took _me_ a while to process my feelings about was that Nami went to Arlong and proposed their deal. On the one hand, this gives Nami more agency in her choice than in the original. On the other, it makes Arlong's betrayal feel less like a betrayal. When Arlong was the one who saw Nami's skills, took her under his wing, assured her that "when it comes to money, I always keep my word", and most importantly didn't obliterate Cocoyasi village when he had Nezumi confiscate what she'd collected, it both felt like he recognized and valued her talents and was motivated to keep her under his thumb. As presented, it plays more like the parable of the frog and the scorpion. We don't see any reason in the LA version of events for Nami to believe Arlong would ever keep his word to a human. If anything, the LA Nami should have been _expecting_ his betrayal and looking for a way around it.

While the village/Nojiko not knowing could at least provide a new angle to Nami’s loneliness, this made her come off as a really stupid child that could have made way better choices. 17:55 That "okay" is yet another sin from Viz translators. It originally says 当たり前だ (atarimaeda) that literally is closer to "No shit, Sherlock", could be translated as "Naturally", "Obviously", "It's out of question that I will". Only changes I would have made are also containing Luffy's "Of course I will!" to just one line, having the townsfolk in on Nami's lie, and Usopp doing the manga scene of "should I lie and hide? No I'll fight!" then have him fire a shot to get the fishman's attention to turn around before the firestar shot. Then I'd also include Hachi to fight Zoro because honestly, octopus are cool and I think the "I have double the swords than you" would've been funny, like just adding more swords doesn't automatically make someone a better fighter. Overall though it was a very solid live action adaptation, I think season 2 will be great!

Regarding that point about the treasure being kept in the grave...yeah, most graveyards have a gravekeeper - the guy who maintains the grounds, mows the grass, trims the hedges or the ivy, keeps things generally in a state where they're ready to hold a formal burial, as well as digging the graves themselves (these days, the initial hole is done with a backhoe because it's a good day's HARD work digging a 6 foot long by 6 foot deep hole by hand). This person is generally charged with reporting any odd goings on around the graveyard and generally ensuring the dead are left in peace the way those they left behind would want. This is generally a person who devotes their whole life to this kind of thing. Mainstream society tends to be a little wigged out about anyone involved in dealing with dead bodies, from ME/Coroners to undertakers, funeral directors, all the way through to the gravekeeper. So, gravekeeping is often the core of these people's lives. Someone digging around in a grave repeatedly is going to get noticed sooner or later. That said, since we're talking about burying *treasure,* it's very possible the gravekeeper gets a kickback to keep things under wraps. And....these guys are professional gardeners for the most part, if anyone can hide the signs of someone digging around the grave, it's the gravekeeper.

Okay, I really liked the adaptation, I think it was so much better than it had any rights to be considering the challenging material, but I gotta rant a little and seems like as good a place as any... One of the thing that I love and find so special about One Piece is the focus on will and how far people will go for their convictions and loyalties. No matter how foolish they might look to others, or if other people don't get it. That "strength" isn't just about punching really hard and that even "weak" characters can be strong of will (and it's usually what Luffy will respect about people). But in the live action so much of that was cut or watered down and sometimes for no real apparent reason. A few examples are Coby, being robbed of his moment standing up to Alvida, or not punching Luffy to protect his own dream; Bellmere not having the easy lie offered to her and still choosing to die rather than renounce her family (here she looks very much cornered into admitting she has one); Sanji, feeding the hungry even when it might bring disaster (where in the live action the only "con" to feeding Gin is that he can't pay), and then seeing the father-son bond between Sanji and Zeff when Zeff validates him by making the exact same choice; Usopp's cowardice/bravery; Nami's townspeople pretending to hate her and then all choosing to fight and die to lift her burden; Nojiko getting tattooed by loyalty to her; and probably many more. Also, I totally get why they would cut Chouchou, it was inevitable, but Luffy fighting to protect a bag of pet food because he respects anyone's treasure/dream had a lot more impact than him being a "good person" (in the eyes of the audience but also Nami) because he... chose not to enslave a bunch of townspeople? Kind of a low bar there, lol. So we almost systematically end up with people that are "good" but in much more easy/mid ways (not enslaving people; getting mad at violence towards an innocent kid; giving one free meal to a starving person). Whereas in the anime they're shown to be quite extraordinary, not for their physical feats, but for their strength of spirit and willpower. In the live action, the only examples shown are Luffy saying "no regrets dying for what you believe in/for your dreams" a bunch of times and then not standing in the way of Zoro's dream when he fought Mihawk. Which is fine but you know, 1- it's "show don't tell", not "tell 95% and show 5%", and 2- in the manga it's just everywhere all the time. Every character we care about has that willpower and convictions in some form or another. So, I still liked the live action plenty, but I'm a bit worried that we're losing one of the major themes of One Piece. Okay, rant over, lol.

IT'S HERE!!!!The issue I have is the changes they made to Nami's backstory which takes away from it but overall it was good

The “Luffy not being strong enough so he brings the building down” thing doesn’t make any sense because they kept the scene in where he stops Arlong from moving his sword with just one hand. Luffy was clearly way stronger than Arlong.

16:52 I think the "Of course I will" is more accurate to the original text, it's the same phrase Luffy uses after Usopp tells him to rise while fighting Lucci (Gives me chills thinking about that scream in the anime).

Agree with a ton of people here. The villagers not knowing about Nami’s deal with Arlong was a real negative. Something that really DID impact my enjoyment of the show. Nami only breaks down in the manga once she realizes that the villagers knew about the deal, and that they’re going off to fight because they can’t stand by and do nothing while she suffers anymore. So she realizes that they care about her and that she’s going to lose them all at once. Which hits way harder. That’s the moment she collapses in the manga. The live action removing that REALLY cut into the emotional impact of the scene. I think this was easily the biggest negative in the entire show. Overall I’d give the show a 7.5/10. They got the spirit of the characters right but they made a bunch of unnecessary changes (not even for screentime reasons) that made it significantly less enjoyable than the original manga/anime. If I wasn’t a One Piece fan and didn’t know about how the manga went, I’d probably give it a higher score, like an 8 or 8.5. But I do do that’s what the live action is being compared to, hence the lower score.

Luffy actually did say "Of Course I will" in the manga as well, but early Viz has a lot of weird translation choices and for some reason they made him say "OK". (Response to 16:43)

yes so true ,, and the Japanese also translates like that .. I can't get over that She didn't even mention the movement he placed his straw hat on her Head !!! jeez .. Did that happen in the manga ?

A positive way to look at things like fan favorite moments not included in the show is: Now newcomers like me have an incentive to dive into the manga and anime.

My biggest gripe besides all the cut content from the manga ( most of which would of added so much weight and drama to scenes) would be Inaki's portrayal of Luffy. He's just way too serious imo. Luffy is so silly and the only time he's not is when he's mad and even then he's usually calm. Watching the Japanese dub actually fixes a lot of those issues but Luffy still seems off to me. The editing is also kind of weird at times.

Hello Merphy. Loved your reviews of Live Action One Piece. I’d love to see a video of your rankings of the most corrupt fictional governing bodies on literature (including manga). Stuff like: The World Government in One Piece Panem in The Hunger Games The Handsmaid Tales Etc.

If season two comes out, they can split 8 episodes (maybe) as follows: Ep 1: Loguetown, Reverse mountain Ep 2: Whisky Peak, Little Garden Ep 3: Drum island Ep 4: Drum island Eps 5-8: Alabasta It might be truncated as all hell, but I could see them doing something like that with each episode being an hour long or something.

The "Nami we knew. We pretended not to know because we didn't want you to feel like we were counting on you. So that if you ever wanted to abandon us and escape you could." that was such a deep deep deep storyline and I regret so much that we didn't go into that in the live action. Not because it mattered to the meta of the store but just because it showcases how FUCKING deep this stories writing is sometimes. Edit. What I would like to see live action is a season that is 10 episodes next season that takes us to Alabasta and then a full length movie that sort of caps it off.

Late comment, but thought I'd just mention that among the translation issues in the US release of the manga is the scene where Luffy says "of course I will!" when Nami asks for help. He does say that. In japanese it's "atarimae da", which technically just means "of course", because the subject is often omitted, but yeah, it should have been translated "of course I will" in the manga.

I think the biggest challenge of season 2 will be getting Chopper absolutely perfect. He is a crew member who gets a lot of screen time so they won't be able to do the trick with Luffy of quick scenes with the stretching. There are more devil fruits as well but 3 of the most important ones are all logias (smoker, ace, and crocodile) and I feel like those will actually be pretty easy to make look good.

I think for season 2 they need a minimum of 10 episodes to cover Alabasta. 2 episodes for Loguetown 1 episode for Reverse Mountain 1 episode for Whiskey Peak 1 episode for Little Garden 2 episode for Drum Island 3 episodes for Alabasta Obviously the more episodes the better, I think 12 or even 16 would be awesome.

The "Of course I will!" is the more accurate translation of あたりまえだ!which the fan translation uses, Luffy shouting "Okay!" is from the viz translation which in turn became the official translation

I agree with your point about the show having to sacrifice depth of side characters, it's just not something television is good at and it sucks so many great moments had to be sacrificed. But the entire village knowing and not telling her always felt stupid to me and i'm glad they changed it. Like, they knew she was never going to stop. Over half her life had been spent working towards buying Coco village, why would letting her believe her community hated her do any good? EDIT: the Genzo "you must be so tired" line gets better if he didn't know. He's not just saying it to her, he's saying it to himself. Like "i'm just realizing how tired you must have been, oh my god you must have hurt so much to see us hate you." Could of had Genzo break down begging Nami to forgive him for treating her like that.

Yeah them knowing adds drama, but I don't think it's actually better for it. Letting a kid grow up thinking you hate them is such a weird, unnecessary choice for a community to make.

I think something more interesting is being set up about Garp and Koby earlier here about what exactly Garp means by ‘The Future of the Marines’ given what we know he thinks about the World Government and what his errant descendants are up to that we’ve never actually gotten in the manga.

Nojiko and the village not knowing was saddening to me. I totally agree with you about Genzo, and how much of the heart of One Piece comes from the stories of the fully realized individuals inhabiting each location we visit. They have to make this huge world smaller and condense it down to a few characters to make the storytelling more efficient for an 8 episode Netflix series, but it does rob the story a little of its power at times. I understand they did this for structural and expositional reasons, but having Nojiko not knowing that Nami was buying back her village was disappointing to me. I villagers knowing shows Oda's ability to write characters and situations with a sense of emotional intelligence. The meaning behind Nojiko's tattoos no longer exist, and the bond she and Nami's shared is now weakened. Nojiko being Nami's only real support during her time with the Arlong pirates, and even getting tattoos in solidarity with Nami to help lessen the trauma of receiving a tattoo that represents her enslavement to Arlong is one of the aspects of Arlong Park that makes it so memorable and beautiful. I adore this adaptation and love so many of the choices it makes in regards to the characters and story, and I think it's a fantastic adaptation overall! It's just that changes such as this saddened me a little.

I thought Hachi was just not included at all, but one of the fishmen is credited as "Hachi/Angry Fishman" which was playing cards with Nami. It's a different design that most looks like a character named "Ishidai" (if the google image translate did not fail me) from a page of concept art of the Arlong Pirates.

I hated the change that the village and especially Nojiko didn't know about Nami's plan! The meaning behind Nojiko's tattooes got removed. And they all just flip their demeanour towards Nami like this? That was such a bad decision..
