Well before we had systems for gastronomy we simply surrounded smaller "life forms"(independent molecular processes that resulted in explication of new molecules not present in the environment) with a membrane to captured its -waste- as an engine, considering with a membrane it could control the relative density and therefor buoyancy (think oil in water in the body to produce metabolisms) of those molecules. I call that the beginning of the 1st war. The war of the mouth.
