Its not the bolt action you want to take to competition, and it's not the bolt rifle you want to take hunting, and it's not the bolt rifle you want to exhibit for quality of manufacture. But damned if it isn't the bolt rifle you want to go to war with.

Actually, I've always been rather fond of my No.1 Mk III as a hunting rifle. It's a dandy hog rifle, fast, accurate and hard hitting. I'm not set up to reload it, but I'm still burning through the ammo I bought it with years ago.
@burmiester18 жыл бұрын
Enfields are good for combat, accurate enough for competition, good for hunting and were made with tremendous quality. Maybe not Luger quality, but still with a great degree of precision. I don't know what more you want.
@australian33088 жыл бұрын
It has been estimated that .303 rifles - either conversions from military config or new made - have taken more large game than any other calibre. Quality wise, the Long Branch rifles and the pre- and post- WW2 English made No4's are a thing of beauty, with exsquisite engineering and detail (especially the Long Branch rifles). The mid-war Brit show some manufacturing relaxations, but they were being bombed, unlike the US and Canada. Savage No4's are considered the worst manufactured of all the No4's (and Savage is Chicopee Falls, USA...not being bombed or harassed) Any Lee Enfield as a battle rifle is hard to beat. The M1 Garand is not God's Right Hand as the popular media has proclaimed for more than half a century. A Mauser 98 system comes very close, but the Lee Enfield has the advantage in speed and firepower. In a true SHTF scenario, I wouldn't take an AR, an AK or any of the quadrail scoped lasered tasered swiss army knife moron magnets - I'd take my genuine DCRA (Dominion of Canada Rifle Association) 7.62 NATO No4 conversion (conversion done at Canadian Arsenals - formerly Long Branch)
@sea28138 жыл бұрын
I'm going to go ahead and disagree with your point about an Enfield being faster and harder hitting than a Garand. There are a lot of negative things about the Garand, but it is most certainly faster to shoot and reload, as well as harder hitting. The 30-06 M2 Ball cartridge has a muzzle energy of around 3800 Joules (2800 ft lb) where as the .303 MK VII cartridge only has a muzzle energy of around 3300 J (2400 ft lb).
@steamengineshooray8 жыл бұрын
If we could own rifles this end of the planet, I'd buy an Enfield in a heartbeat. The family may not be a powerhouse like the Garands or an engineering masterpiece like the Mausers, but theses venerable ladies provided security and firepower to a legendary empire, nation and commonwealth. The Enfield is still in service by the Danish troops in northern Greenland. They are called the Sirius Patrol.
@GeorgiaBoy19614 жыл бұрын
Victer, the M1917 is a different pattern/design of rifle than the Lee-Enfield shown here. The British considered replacing the SMLE during WWI, but aborted the attempt due to wartime production pressures. The replacement arm being contemplated was what became known as the Enfield M1917 in Britain, and the Model 1917 in the U.S., where it was chambered in 30-06 and armed many American soldiers during that war. The M1917 is laid-out along the lines of a traditional Mauser, and does not copy the SMLE two-lug short-throw action. The M1917 is a longer, heavier rifle, with a large and very strong receiver, which is why they became popular to sporterize (convert) to hunting and competition use. The action is strong-enough to tolerate a magnum cartridge, which the SMLE-type Lees cannot. You are correct about the Sirius Sledge Patrol, they do use vintage military bolt-actions, but the M1917 in 30-06 and not the SMLE or No. 4Mk. I in .303 rimmed.

Hi Victer, are you by any chance a Dane? My mother and brother were both born there! I thought I'd ask because of your last name, which is spelled in the Danish manner. Ah yes, the Enfield, my favorite! Imo the Enfield no 1 mk3 is better than the Mauser, because with the Enfield, you can chamber the bolt while aiming down sights and not punch yourself in the face, unlike the Mauser, where you can tilt your head left and not punch yourself in the face, but then you aren't aiming, and you can aim and chamber the bolt, but your sights will be blocked with the 90 degree rotation of the bolt. And the simple answer to why you can shoot an Enfield so fast is because the bolt is comfortably behind the trigger, allowing for a fast action of shooting with the middle finger, and rapidly racking the bolt with a good grip with the pointer and thumb. And lastly, we all know, it can hold 10 rounds, and yes, 10 does wear the spring, but just load 8, shoot off 3 or 5, and then load a charger. But must say, the Mauser and karabiner 98 and the Enfield are my three most favorite bolt rifles, and I do acknowledge the future influence of the Mauser's one peice bolt, but I just simply like the Enfield more.the bolts more comfortable, I love the look, and simply racking the bolt rapidly is a pleasure of the rifle you must try!

There's a story from the Battle of Mons in WWI (I can't remember the source so feel free to take this with a pinch of salt) about the SMLE that really shows off a) the standard of British Marksmanship in that era, and b) just how fast the SMLE was. The story goes that a company of BEF troops were making an attack over around 1,000 yards of no-man's land, and they made it with hardly a shot fired in response. When the captured Germans were questioned, they said that anyone who bothered sticking their Pickelhaube up to fire a shot back caught one right in the head, and that they thought they were under attack from a new slow-firing machine gun. Really shows you what these old rifles could do!
@johnbrigg1776 Жыл бұрын
Trained on and equipped with these in British army 1950’s. Taught to release safety catch with thumb but ALWAYS apply safety catch with forefinger. If you use the thumb, as demonstrated, there is a very real risk that you will accidentally fire the rifle as the forefinger will be close to and in easy reach of the trigger.

Small correction here. This is a Lee-Enfield, NOT an Enfield. An Enfield is a different rifle. Following the Boer War the British army wanted to change its rifle design and switch to a smaller bore (7 mm). So the Enfield rifle was developed. It had forward lugs as in the Mauser pattern but retained cock on closing and had a rear peep sight as the No. 4 Lee-Enfield had later. It also used an internal magazine. The design was finalized in 1913 and the Army intended to re-equip with this Enfield. However War War 1 interrupted the process so the Enfield was redesigned to take the .303 (7.7 mm) ammunition. This .303 version was called the Pattern-1914 Enfield (P-14). These were manufactured in parallel with the Lee-Enfields. A lot of this P-14 manufacturing was done by Remington in the USA. In 1917 when the US entered WW1, the US army needed lots of rifles quickly so the Remington Enfield was modified to use the .30-06 cartridge and this version was known as the Pattern-17 Enfield (P-17). WW1 proved the battlefield superiority of the Lee-Enfields so this design was retained. P-14s were issued to troops only in Britain, and was used by the home guard in WW2. Likewise the US P-17s were only used within the US. Overseas troops used the Springfields.

Ahahaha mad minute so much fun to do :) in ww1 the first BEF troops mastered it so much that the Germans thought they where coming across a trench of automatic weapons when in reality it was bolt-actions :) my great grandfather carried a earlier model into the trenches in WW1 best damn weapon ever made in my opinion

What would you say about the accuracy of the Enfield system? With that smooth action and consequently fast fire rate, do you think an Enfield system would make a good modern combat sniper/marksman rifle?
@tfbtv8 жыл бұрын
+Gunnyboy No. They arent generally very accurate guns.
@simonwatts83388 жыл бұрын
TFB TV They are not inaccurate. A standard issue Lee Enfield is about as accurate as a standard issue Kar 98. It's just that in theory, a Mauser action is better for target shooting or sniping if "accurised". Saying that, the British army used the Enfield as a sniper rifle up until the late 1980's in the L42 model with no complaints.

Maybe you just arent an accurate shooter?? The einfieldis accurate as is any weapon with an accurate shooter

I reckon from a practical perspective it is more accurate than a Mauser as with those sights you can actually see the target at 500yds. I have shot a K98k and Enfield on the same day at man sized targets at 300 yds and the Mauser took a significiant degree of faffing around before I started getting groups a whole detail ended up somewhere in the butts. Enfield was on within first 2 shots fired with a nice grouping in the last 3. I reckon i could have got them all on if the sights were adjusted differently, atm they are offset quite heavily so you can line up the right angle of the foresight against the frame of the target (an old competition trick), but obviously in this arrangement there is an optimum range and target size (500 yds with the larger square type frames) and at other distances it is shooting to the right to varying degrees and you need to compensate with your aim. At 300 luckily it was dead on. You will see lots of Enfield sights set up this way particularly as they passed out of active military use and were picked up by people exclusively firing at targets. Having an aperture sight means you can see what you are shooting at and see the splashes behind the target. The foresight on the Mauser totally obscures the target and the trigger is pretty heavy and only one stage. I prefer the stock of the Mauser it feels better in the hand but that's about it, my Enfield stock is the normal size when really I probably need long (they were made in several different sizes: Brabant, Small, Normal and Long. It's marked on the top side of the butt), I sometimes end up getting a little too close to the sights, that extra 1/2 inch would save my forehead a dent or two! bonus, Mauser related competition trick. when at 500 yds or beyond make the sights shoot either too low or high and line the top of the sight along either the top or bottom of the frame depending on which way you adjusted the sight. It is much easier to aim this way andbit keeps that obese foresight from obscuring your view. Only seemed fair after the No.4 how to make it look like your better at shooting than you actually are tip.

That .303 British round makes for one hell of a deer hunting round. Just stonewalls em. Love the Enfield rifles, just wish magazines were easier to come by (and cheaper).

This is a good rifle but I like the strength of the Mauser action in the Springfield better as well as the 30-06 cartridge.

Is there a technical term for pinching the bolt on a rifle and firing with your ring finger? Also is it weird I only buy full power rifles (270 and larger) if I can pinch the bolt and fire?
@bolshoefeodor6536 Жыл бұрын
Gotta use your palm to cycle the bolt, in a smooth arcing motion - up and over to open, forward and down to close. Cocking on close.

How much did you spend on the one you are using in the video? (If you don't mind me asking) I am very interested in getting one in decent condition and is able to fire. Going to a gun show next week and I'm looking for a good idea of how much money to bring! It seems like these just keep on going up in price from all the research I've done and it makes it hard to have a good understanding of its market value.
