TAKING KZbinS ADVICE, THIS IS A RE-RUN AND RETITLE OF THE ORIGINAL SERIES THAT WAS FILMED OVER THE INITIAL COVID YEAR.
A gardeners world; Nursery, gardens, propagation, plants galore and all the growing tips that go with them. A unique weekly documentary series filmed throughout 2020. A must for gardeners worldwide.
Informative, irreverent, funny and totally without comparison. After a lifetime in horticulture, Malcolm Hockham and his young team answer The Royal Horticultural Societies 2019 article that the industry is in crisis. Not here it isn't!.....Malcolms final full year on the nursery shows you why.
While i'm struggling for some fresh ideas and something useful or original to say, my friends from the South have come to the rescue this week with an interesting video on Maple sowing....Mathew and Laura are not used to this filming stuff, so some was done in in portrait mode....then the phone broke, so some was shot on a different phone.....so we've cobbled together what we could. I think they've done admirably well....we hope to see much more of them in coming weeks.
I hope everyone is keeping out of harms way.....I've seen nobody in the garden for nearly two weeks. Apart from Thomas, and he doesn't count.

One of your best videos; I completely agree with your views regarding garden centres, the 'get rich quick' people. I've lost so many Dutch-grown plants that I had given up some aspects of gardening altogether. The daft thing is that clothes and tools we need aren't available in town, and I absolutely will not buy from Amazon. Love your nursery see you one day.

Sacagawea was a North American native woman who helped Lewis and Clark on their expedition to find an all water route from the east coast to the west. They didn't find the passage but they did describe and name many animals and plants for the first time, including Camassia quamash which they discovered when nearing starvation they met up with a Nez Perce tribe that fed them bread made from the lily. My favorite quote from the night they ate so much of it that it “filled us so full of wind, that we were scarcely able to Breathe all night." It is an asparagus relative so makes sense I guess... keep up the shows, they're great and I hope the dark times end soon!

Don't worry about your content Malcolm. Just pottering round with you and your musings on various plants, watering issues etc is very restful and comforting. I always learn something each visit and look forward to seeing how you and Lisa are doing. Look after yourselves and thank you for sharing your knowledge. Enjoyed the visit to Matthew and Lauras.

Over here in New Hampshire nurseries are considered essential as they should be.... bedding plants, vegetable seedlings, ornamentals are scarce or completely sold out. I think people are spending time enjoying their gardens this year much more than past years. Loved the maple seeding vid. Would like to see video of the japanese maples being pruned / trained. I have two that Im growing on from seed. About 3' tall now. Holding the dark burgandy foliage color very well. But, problem is they are spindly - stem is not very robust / thick.

Well done with the trillium. As someone who has observed, transplanted, and attempted to encourage them on my rented properties in New England, i am floored. Have talked to fellow plantspeople who have had very little success at this. Truly admire the centuries of tradition that inspire such propogation. A "nursery" in the states can't hold a candle to a nursery in the UK.

Love these tours Malcolm and while I am furloughed it’s great to have the garden but really miss a wee trip to a good nursery - not a fan of garden centres but anyway I am near Belfast and it’s always good to see what plants you have that I haven’t seen before especially when you pronounce those names I can’t get my tongue around 😂 Keep safe and I do hope you get some financial help as you deserve it 👏👏

The edible Camassia at the tip of your tongue (pun intended) is C. quamash ;) The Wollemia nobilis is actually very rare and has been in existence since the late Cretacious . A small population still survives somewhere in a secret place in Australia. Since the discovery a select few people have been authorized to collect seed to share with botanical institutions around the world as a conservation effort as they're on the verge of extinction (recent bush fires in Australia nearly saw to their decimation). Over the years these institutions started giving away/selling a few small plants to private people and the global population is now growing thank to these efforts. Even garden centers offer a few on rare occasions (they're bloody expensive though)

We don't have a nursery near us but we do have a garden centre a half mile away which is shut. We so miss popping round for the little bits and pieces we need at this time of year. It must be driving you mad with all those plants and not being able to sell any. You could send Thomas round on an old trade bike I suppose lol . Take care and keep safe in these troubled times.

You so deserve financial assistance, I wish I lived in the area because I’d volunteer a few hours (Maybe it would class as my daily exercise) just to help keep on top of things and if I was employed by you I’d definitely come in for a few hours when possible - hint hint to any staff that may read this 👍 ...social distancing would be do-able I feel. I also now think that with a little bit of organisation most “proper” garden centres could open for at least a few hours daily....nurserymen are in a class of their own & certainly a higher class at that 😃 thanks for the visit to Barthelemys, twas quite interesting 🧐 Stay safe and well everyone x

Malcolm, so sorry this virus thing is making life hard for you and your employees. So many plants to tend to plus the general maintenance and propagation. I love watching the propagation since I do it here at my nursery also. The maple tree nursery visit was great!! What is the spelling of the the dark red leafed plant you showed at about 11:54 in the video? Sounded like you said Rhune but couldn't find any plant called that when I googled it. Such a beauty!! Can't wait for the next time you show how it has grown. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos!

It’s Rheum....as in rheumatism!......There is a distinct difference between atropurpureum and atrosanguineum .......whichever, it’s best to know the parent plant and obtain a clone as some are much redder than others....thank you for your kind comments Regina. I am hoping to get Matthew to contribute some more items...Best wishes.....Malcolm

Another great video Malcolm, loved the sections with Mathew and Wendy, Mikawa Yatsuba & Shishigashira are 2 fantastic picks, I picked a couple of gashiras up from you last year, (along with some from Mathew, never dreamed they were possibly from the same stock plant.) Of all the sellers I've bought from (I'm holding around 500 at present) yours and Mathews are leaps and bounds ahead, I bought a few from some multiple Chelsea gold winners, absolute garbage. Tough It out mate there Is will be over one day.

Hmph for some reason the only rheum I could get hold of in USA was the green variety so I have it but the place it’s growing is too windy so I will move it this early Spring. Sheesh I am sorry about the place you are between the rock and the hard place concerning Nurseries vs Garden Centers. How typical. ☹️

We know the camas because it was a common foodstuff, and cause of grief when the White settlers destroyed the camas prairies the Indians lived on in Washington State. Wikipedia says the camas is : Camassia quamash supsp. quamash, Camassia esculenta (Nutt.) Lindl.,[6] should not be confused with the superseded name Camassia esculenta Etymology[edit] The genus name comes from the Nez Perce Indian name for this plant, and means "sweet".[4] Qém'es, a term for the plant's bulb, which was gathered and used as a food source by tribes in the Pacific Northwest, and were an important food source for the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806).[4] The bulbs were harvested and pit-roasted or boiled by women of the Nez Perce, Cree, and Blackfoot tribes. Thomas is quite right! Sacajawea was an Indian, wife of one of the paddlers Lewis and Clark had on their trip to explore the Great West. The ended up going all the way from the Mississippi to the Pacific Coast, largely because she acted as interpreter and probably help in more ways than that. Indian women knew how to prepare the camas root for food, and they were decidedly in trouble for provisions by the end. They succeeded, and all survived, even the Newfoundland, Seaman (Meriwether Lewis’ dog), who was the only animal to complete the entire trip, there and back again.

On occasion when rabbits become a problem I use a 22 calibre rifle. Less damage with a 22 to the rabbit means I can make a meal of my enemy. Perhaps even light rifles are not allowed in England though. If so Pity!
