james Clavell said as much himself. Shogun is based loosely upon what happened to Adams. If you really want to know history of Japan then do look up the most famous Briton in Japan. This is Thomas Blake Glover. He alone single handedly dragged Japan into the modern world, he helped end the shogun era, and there is a national holiday in his name each year in Japan.

In the immediate vicinity of Yokosuka, where the US military base in Japan is located, there is a place called Anjinzuka. The name comes from the fact that this area was a territory given to William by Shogun Tokugawa, and that his memorial tower (->zuka) was built there after his death. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anjinzuka_Station

I love the movie called Shogun in 1980, some of it was actually very extremely accurate and also other parts were actually Hollywood. Richard Chamberlain a British actor became the English navigator and samurai warrior. In the movie he wanted to go back to England but in reality he stayed in Japan for being a samurai, having samurai warriors under his command, property,a Japanese woman, land, servants, and also being looked up as an important person. Miura Anjin is his Japanese name due to his land and property in Miura area.

In Japan, William Adam became a hatamoto samurai which is high ranking position directly under the service of the shogun. Hatamoto samurais have the right to have an audience with the Shogun. William Adam had wealth and status in Japan where he had none back in his native England. He still care for his family's well being back in England despite having a new wife and a family in Japan and regularly send money to them though the Dutch East Indies Company. His son by his Japanese wife inherited his title of Miura Anjin when he died in 1620. After the Sakoku Edict was implemented in 1635, the records of his Japanese family ceased to exist.

If you visit Japan, there's his house outside of Nagazaki, which is now a museum & the memorial for him and his Japanese wife ( she was a noblewoman). He had a son & a daughter, the son continued to serve the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. After Tokugawa's death, his bloodthirsty & xenophobic son took over & started prosecuting Christians & ''half breeds'' and we don't have records of what happened to Adam's descendants. Today, he's a highly revered historical figure in Japan, for his contributions to foreign relations between Japan/ Europe and his service for the Shogun during the unification of Japan. There's also a district in Tokyo named after him and they have an annual festival in his honor, the ''Anjin festival'' ( ''festival of the Navigator'').

1) Will Adams' Japanese wife (Oyuki Kageyu) was not a "noblewoman". While she was the daughter of an important official Magome Kageyu who was in charge of an important waystation on one of Japan's ancient highways, he was not a samurai. Adams was made a samurai by Tokugawa Ieyasu and did not need to marry into a samurai family. 2) Tokugawa is the surname, not a given name. Adams was made a samurai by Ieyasu Tokugawa who became Shogun. It was his GRANDSON Iemitsu who closed Japan to all but the Dutch and Chinese traders. They would had allow the English to continue trading, but the English refused to listen to Adams' advices and the English trade mission failed and they went home Contrary to your description of Ietmitsu being "bloodthirsty" and "xenophobic" he closed Japan to protect Japan because as his grandfather (Ieyasu) and father (Hidetada) knew (thanks to Will Adams) about how European countries first come to trade, then spread Christianity to seed disunity, then invade just as they have done to the people of the Americas. Ieyasu and Hidetada had to tolerate the Europeans because the Japanese did not know at the time how to make guns and had to purchase them from at first Portugal, then Spain, England, and the Netherlands. (Dutch). Iemitsu allowed the Dutch to continue trading because they were the only European traders who were not spreading their religion. 3) The Tokugawa Shogun could not care less about Christians except that the brand of Christianity being spread by Spain and Portugal was Catholicism which meant any Japanese convert would be required to obey the Pope over the Shogun. And it didn't help matters that many of the anti-Tokugawa Daimyos had converted to Catholicism. Japan was "closed" because they didn't want to end up like the Incas, Aztecs, and eventually the North American "Indians", Africa, India, Australia, and SE Asia, and China. The only Xenophobes are the bloodthirsty, greedy, RACIST Europeans who spread imperialism and colonialism around the world in the name of White Man's Burden and Manifest Destiny.

Christianity was banned becoz of the "slave trade". The number of Japanese slaves traded with the Portuguese and English by the Daimyos(lords) who converted to Christianity was about 50,000. As you know, America, Africa, and Asia in the same period were being slaughtered by bloodthirsty xenophobic Christians, countries were being destroyed, and their inhabitants were being enslaved. The Portuguese also brought African slaves to Japan. One of them was presented to Nobunaga Oda and became famous under the name "Yasuke".

Shogun, the book by James Clavell, is basically a fictional version of William Adams' story. He changed the names & some of the events, in order to write his book but most of it is based on real events/people. For example, Lord Torunaga is based on Tokugawa Ieyasu the first Shogun. And yes, the new show is great so far. There's also the 1980 Shogun mini-series, starring Richard Chamberlain & Toshiro Mifune, which I would recommend.

The image in this video gives you a bit wrong image of the Japanese people at that time. Clothes and gears depicted seem to be mixed with Chinese, it is not really like Japanese clothes and gears. It's sad to see people all mixing "Asian" things together, ignoring all the differences between countries. It is as if you see a medieval English man depicted with Italian clothes and French hair styles, for instance.

It is unknown whether they were given the rank of samurai like Yasuke and William Adams, but there were several Chinese and Koreans and two Italians who served the daimyo in battle during the Sengoku period. As far as I understand, there is no proof that Adam’s was a samurai. The often used evidence that he’s a samurai is that he carried 2 swords, which samurai were allowed to do. However, there are other classes of people who aren’t samurai but allowed to wear 2 swords. The most famous of these classes allowed to wear 2 swords were doctors. Carrying 2 swords might just be interpreted as Adams being an “expert” recognized by the Shogunate, similar to doctors, and not that Adams was recognized as samurai.

This story sounds like it could’ve been one of the inspirations for the movie “The Last Samurai” (which, while a bit ridiculous, to me is still fairly enjoyable and interesting) -- I know The Last Samurai is set centuries after the Tokugawa age (more precisely in the Meiji era, 1870s onwards), but it's still probable that the movie's producers might've take some elements of William's story and added them to the story. And yes, I *do know* very well when The Last Samurai is set (and people who keep pointing out the movie’s historical setting as if I didn’t only make me laugh). I also know some elements in the movie are too similar to William Adams’ story to be just a coincidence, which means the movie - alongside the real historical figures Tom Cruise’s character is based on - used _some aspects_ of William’s story too as inspiration. People need to **get over the idea that Cruise’s movie being set 260 years after William’s story makes it impossible for the latter to have served as one of the movie’s inspirations** (flashnews: it doesn’t).

The movie did not draw on any of addams history. And was purely fictional entertainment. Cruise character was completely fictional and a solider from America. He wasn’t a samurai in the movie but a bushi. Adams was a navigator from Europe. He never participated in any battles and had no combat training. He was given the title of Samurai as an advisor. He brokered trade routes and taught ship building techniques and helped provide cannons. He also advised on which country for Japan not to deal with.

Very interesting piece of history, well told. However the pictures of William were hideous. The costuming was like something out of a Disney cartoon. Particularly the English clothes. As for the image of him with his Japanese sword slung across his back. That was 100% wrong in every way. Too much watching of Wallace in Braveheart.

Point is certain, that is, from the pre -Qin dynasty, there have been 4 times large -scale immigrants from Chinese Han people to enter the Japanese islands and Korean Peninsula, which have a profound impact on the historical trends of China and Japan and ( Korean Peninsula ). Focus on reference materials : Yayoi period (300 B.C. - A.D. 300) 彌生時代 Kofun period (300 - 645) 大和時代 Asuka Period (538-710 AD) (645 -710) 飛鳥時代 Nara period (710-794) 奈良時代 Heian period (794-1185) 平安時代 Chinese Han people's four large -scale immigrants enter the Japanese islands record : 1. Qin and Han Dynasty Qin Shihuang (秦始皇 259-210 BC) swept the six regions. In order to escape the war, the Chinese people fled to Japan in two ways: Some Chinese people crossed the sea from the Northeast to the Korean Peninsula to Japan. Japan. 2. During the Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties (420 -589 BC) During the period of "Upheaval of the Five Barbarians 五胡亂華", in order to avoid the war, the Chinese people began a wave of migration to a large -scale migration around. Most of the fleeing Chinese finally went to Japan, forming the climax of immigration to Japan. The representative is Liu Azhi (劉阿知), the descendant of Emperor Han Xian(漢獻帝). 3. The Sui and Tang Dynasties (581-907 BC) Chinese Emperor send a large -scale Tang ambassador (they were Chinese )to Japan 倭, while China sent a large number of people and technology and culture to Japan (for Chinese lived in Japan) . Most of these people are monks or cultural scholars. They are left as required by the Chinese who lived in Japan because of the difficult sailing and welcomed by Japan. They often stay and lived in Japan . The representative is the monk Jianzhen(監真). 4. The Song (960-1279)and Ming dynasties(1368-1644) In the Yuan Dynasty, the Han people in the southern Song Dynasty broke their families. In order to avoid the war and kill, they moved to Japan one after another. The representative of this period was scholar of the Southern Song Dynasty - Lanxi Daolong(蘭溪道隆). * The sea between China and Japan is very dangerous. Therefore, the ship of ancient Chinese needs to pass through the peninsula (today in South Korea). It is safer to reach Japan. In addition, the ancient Japanese and Koreans could not enter China (nor could they communicate with the Chinese). Entering the Chinese city must require the Chinese Han identity certificate or pass certificate. Only Chinese talents in Japan can enter China. ***************************** In ancient China. Due to the escape or expansion of territorial reasons. There were many records of the Han people moved to the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese islands (including Okinawa). Establishing small countries and regimes on these islands (representing Chinese senior officials rather than emperor). In addition to the later period of Japan (because of the ocean). The Han regime on the Korean Peninsula has always been the ancient Chinese territory and the scope of direct jurisdiction (but sometimes it is similar to the different phenomenon of political opinions from the central government. It is similar to the situation in Taiwan and Hong Kong today. When the relationship between Taiwan and Hong Kong and the central government is bad. Sometimes they think they are independent countries or claim to be non -Chinese). The history of the establishment of a regime on the Korean Peninsula (Goguryeo, Baiji, Silla, Goryeo , Joseon). It is not the history of the Korean people. Instead, it is the history of the local regime of the Han people in northern China. These royal family and nobles are Chinese and descendants who move to the peninsula. They are wearing Han nationality clothing and using Chinese characters. They also claim to be the Han family. They are like Hong Kong and Macau and Taiwan. The Han people basically speak two Chinese languages (Chinese dialects+Chinese official language), one of the Han dialects that are lost. * There are more than 20 dialects in Chinese Han nationality. Only some civilians and slaves are indigenous people from the south of the peninsula (Koreans). This is very certain. (A large number of ancient Chinese tombs were unearthed on the 4/5 Korean Peninsula today. Han murals (depicting the lives of the Han people in the north), the fairy and god beast of the Han nationality.Han religion. Chinese character stone monument. Han Dynasty coins. ........... The southernmost part of the peninsula is unearthed in the original and backward Korean national life tools. It can be seen that the extremes of two different ethnic groups( Chinese VS Korean ) and different civilizations exist at the same time in the same period of the peninsula history. "The history of Japan before the 13th" is the history of the Chinese people in ancient Japan. It is a local history written by the Chinese emperor instructed by the Chinese emperor (the same as other Chinese cities). At that time, in addition to the Chinese people lived in a place in Japan (near the Chinese palace), there were many other indigenous peoples in Japan. These are the ancestors of Japanese people today. They speak Japanese language. After the 13th century, indigenous (bald hairstyles on the top) invaded Chinese palaces and snatched the materials of local Chinese. Including a large number of Chinese books and Chinese art. Forced those Chinese elites to join and assist the indigenous (invaders) to continue to develop and maintain Chinese governance methods and Chinese civilization. Some wandering Chinese change their identities and become local Robs/samurai/ninja/monks .... These industries The founders and organization members. Most of them are Chinese. So in Japan (including Korea and North Vietnam) area , there are a large number of ancient Chinese tombs and Chinese relics unearthed . Of course, the Japanese are not Chinese. The ancestors of the Japanese are indigenous in ancient Japan. But before the 13th century. In ancient Japan, the Chinese regime established by Chinese people in the local area. Therefore, Chinese culture naturally appeared in ancient Japan. They have always maintained a relationship with Chinese officials. ---------------------------- Anceint japan (before 13th century )= 東瀛 & 扶桑 & 倭 . (the name set by the Chinese emperor. There were NO western Samurai. Samurai was a hereditary caste. Toyotomi Hideyoshi was ruler of Japan but he was NEVER called Shogun or even Samurai because he was born a peasant. You could own land and have wealth, but Samurai were ONLY ever hereditary ranks.

@sandorsbox well you should go back to ancient Japan and tell Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu he isn't allowed to do that. Lol. It is well documented in Japanese historical documents that Ieyasu made Adams a Samurai. This video quotes what Ieyasu said to Adams when he made him a Samurai. Those quotes come from Tokugawa family records in Japan. He told him William Adams is dead you are now reborn Miura Anjin a Samurai.... So you're wrong. There were other non-Japanese that were made Samurai as well that are written in historical documents in Japan not just Adams. Educate yourself.
