I live in his hometown. Here, we have an annual fest that celebrates Japanese culture and the Japanese society in the local area. We have a couple of roads named after the place he landed in and died in and a hospital named after him too. In Japan there’s a festival in August that celebrates it and theres a couple statues of him in either Ito or Yokosuka (I forgot which). There’s also an exchange trip for a couple of students where we can go over there for two weeks to visit the places he lived and then a student comes over here and gets to look around the area and its historic significance. Pretty interesting story too!

The Book is one of the best pieces of fictional history there is. It gives the flavor of 1600 nautical exploration, piracy, European colonization, the Reformation, Wars of Religion, Feudal Japan, The Warring States Period, Samurai, ninja, general Japanese culture, Elizabethan England, Dutch, Spain, Portugal, Catholic Church politics, prostitution and Geisha, Japanese cast system, sexual fetishism, under age sex, tragedy and romance too. It's basically a historical orgasm in book form for any history nerd. The television miniseries was a sad shadow of the novel, and is about as appealing as a bowl of warm water to a starving man even though it has an audience rating of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. The book is just that good.

Before my grandmother passed away, she would always tell my family that we were of Samurai descent. Of course, my family never questioned it, as I am an American-born half-Japanese, but we didn't really think about the significance. Towards my early teenage years, I wanted to know more about my family's past (for a high school assignment). According to my grandma, who learned from my great grandmother, that we were from the Shimazu clan, specifically from Nariakira Shimazu. My mother's uncle bore a resemblance to the man, so it seemed plausible. I then decided to research more about Shimazu, only to find out that from his mother's side, he was a descendant of Tokugawa Ieyasu himself. Kind of explains why my side of the family always had an interest in Western things as Ieyasu and Nariakira did. I've personally never been to Japan, but one day, I would like to move there and learn more about my family's history with the Shimazu, Tokugawa, Kamakura and Minamoto families. It's well discussed by academics that the Dutch sailor was provided a much more lavish and expensive residence than Adams after the Tokugawa shogunate was established. Though we don't have many records, it has been suggested that his role as an advisor to Tokugawa Ieyasu was more prominent. Additionally, neither Adams nor Joosten were considered 'samurai' they were merchants first and foremost, not likely to have fought during the major conflicts that occurred during their time in Japan. William Adams is one of the most famous Englishmen in Japan, appearing in Japanese history textbooks. He has often appeared in samurai dramas and movies set in 16th and 17th century Japan, and is currently featured in a Taiga drama on national television. Of course, movies have been made about his life in the past, so you should check them out.🏯

There is a station in my hometown called Anjinzuka(安針塚) I have always thought it was a strange name. When I saw this video and wikipedia, I got goosebumps when I found out it was his territory The station comes from his Japanese name. The word "zuka" means "grave" in Japanese, so when I was a child, I thought it was a horrible place. finally getting to know. Thank you.
@daffygrey2 жыл бұрын
I thought 'zuka' was mound, with 'haka' 墓 being grave. The tomb in Tsukayama kōen 塚山公園 only contained the remains of his Japanese wife. Adams was buried in Hirado, and remained there. DNA tests done a couple of years ago proved this.

Yet, in my memory, all he ever says is "Hai Toranaga-sama. Wakarimasu!" (or Gomen-nasai. Wakarmasen). And that's basically it. _Everyone_ in Europe who had the spare time to care was kinda into Japan in the late 19th-early 20th centuries. For a while, an interest in some part of "the Orient" seemed to pop up among the more worldly types every century or so for at least a few decades. Before Japan, _China_ was all the rage on-and-off through the 16th-18th centuries, sparking a craving for "chinoiserie": European-made architecture, arts, and crafts incorporating strong elements of Chinese style. When neither China nor Japan were in style, there was generally a craze for India and/or parts of the Islamic world; Algeria, Morocco, the Ottoman Empire, sometimes Persia...
