I find it really interesting how with many popular, long lasting toy brands they usually go through reboots or redesigns (e.g., Mickey Mouse, Barbie, My Little Pony). But Hello Kitty is pretty much the exact same as she was almost fifty years ago.

i’m also so happy sanrio is making a comeback here in the western world! i’ve been a hello kitty and just sanrio in general fan my whole life thanks to my momma. as i got a little older other kids would tell me i was too old to like hello kitty but that never stopped me. when i entered 6th my teacher was obsessed with hello kitty and sanrio too and it reminded me hello kitty is for everyone of all ages. i’m glad everyone is remembering that now and allowing themselves to indulge their interests especially in sanrio!

My family was stationed in Japan for 3 years starting when I was in kindergarten and the mall on the island had an entire Hello Kitty store. It was literal heaven as a child and I was so confused when I lived back to the states around 2010 and Hello Kitty wasn’t nearly as widespread as in Japan. I truly had everything I could get my hands on: clothes, stuffed animals, pillows, notebooks, keychains, backpacks, and, of course, a coin purse. Child me lived a breathed Hello Kitty and I have never stopped

When I was a kid with no concept of money, I did a mail in order to join the Hello Kitty fan club. I got one or two pagackages before my parents figured it out and canceled it. They were super cute box gifts though, so I don't regret it one bit!

silly little thing about me: chococat is my EVERYTHING. I resonate with him so intensely it's INSANE. chococat was born and raised in chocotown colorado, his parents are divorced and he is also a big tech nerd who uses his whiskers to intercept information and radiowaves and stuff! he definitely isn't the most obscure of sanrio characters but I am constantly fighting for my LIFE to find chococat themed things 😖

I remember when the "controversy" over Hello Kitty not actually being a cat hit. I think a lot of people who were more than casual fans already knew (I mean, she has a pet cat! If she was actually a cat that would be....really weird). Western media has been a little inconsistent as well over the years, some of the cartoon dubs describe her and her family as cats, either because the company doing the dubbing didn't care, or because they thought american kids wouldn't get it. They might have been right, I don't know. Still, the Hello Kitty Paradise theme is a bit of a jam! The coolest Sanrio toy I have is a mini-plush box set of Hello Kitty as Alice In Wonderland (with Dear Daniel as the Mad Hatter, and a tiny White Rabbit My Melody). Got it at a gift shop specializing in Japanese imports in maybe 2003, where I also discovered San-X and Gloomy Bear. I love weird cute culture things!
